<p>An All-22 film look at the sacks taken by Colt McCoy against the Colts and a look at whose fault they were.</p> <p><span> </span>I was going to do a "missed opportunities" film breakdown but I realized I'd get roasted if I ignored the six sacks taken by <span>Colt McCoy</span> after highlighting the ones <span>Robert Griffin III</span> took. Let's take a look at what went wrong and who is to blame.</p>

<p>1. This one is a play-action with a two man route. <span>DeSean Jackson</span> is running the climb route while <span>Pierre Garcon</span> is running the double move on the outside.</p>

<p><span>Alfred Morris</span> takes a terrible angle in pass protection as you can see him diving above at the pass rusher. Colt would have had to throw it now to even have a chance and the CB still has 5 yards of cushion.</p>

<p>Garcon DOES get 1/2 a step on the CB and the single high safety stays in the middle of the field so McCoy could have let it go but Morris is going to get the blame on this one.</p>

<p>Garcon gets a step on his CB and is going to run towards the pylon. McCoy sees it but hesitates. Windows are small in the NFL, you can't do that.</p>

<p>McCoy double clutches and then goes to throw it but the single high safety scares McCoy into bringing the ball back down. He should have trusted his eyes.</p>

<p>#3. It's third and long here so Colts are playing far off Cover 3. McCoy wants <span>Andre Roberts</span> on the dig route from the slot.</p>

<p>The LB, who typically has the flat in a Cover 3, carries Roberts up the seam. Meanwhile, <span>Jordan Reed</span> is coming open on the route to the flat and it looks like he could have ran for a first down.</p>

<p>As Colt tries to look back at one of his dump off choices, he is swallowed up in the pocket. I put this one on Tom Compton.</p>

<p>#5. Here is the dreaded 4th down play. Gruden originally had a power run called on this down but the Colts took a timeout. When they came back out, they had loaded up the line of scrimmage so Gruden decided to go play action. Many people complained about the play-action play call. I have no problem with it. As we showed later on the goal line, we have a hard time running on short yardage situations. Unfortunately, this one wasn't blocked correctly.</p>

<p><span>Logan Paulsen</span> blocks <span>Trent Williams</span>' guy and Williams is left standing there while the outside guy runs free to McCoy. If there is one guy who I don't want NOT blocking, it's Trent Williams. McCoy was going to take the one on one shot with Jackson at the top of the screen but didn't have time to get if off. Sack #5 results in a fumble and touchdown for the Colts.</p>

<p>#6. The Colts bring a CB blitz from the short side of the field and the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/washington-redskins">Redskins</a> are running a Wolf Smash concept (out route and corner route) towards it.</p>

<p>McCoy is reading that side of the field and when he sees the DB crash on the out route, he should throw the corner route now. Especially, considering he has a free DB blitzing towards his face.</p>

<p>McCoy panics and tries to run from <span>Greg Toler</span> while looking to the other side of the field. He could dump if off here but Toler gets to him too quick and causes another fumble. This time we recover but this one is on McCoy.</p>

<p>There is plenty of blame to go around. It's not just the quarterback, it's not just the offensive line and it's not just the skill players. No two facets of the offense have worked like a well-oiled machine, let alone all three. But while there were slow times and plays left on the field, the offense wasn't as stagnant this week. Something to hang our hats on?</p>

<p>An All-22 film look at exactly what happened that sprung all those big plays for the Colts</p> <p><span> </span>Last week, <span>Ryan Clark</span> was asked why the defense played so well. He responded, "the coaches simplified things." Well, that lasted about a week. It's not that Jim Haslett decided to go back and call tougher, more complex plays, it's because the simplified things somehow ended up being hard. Let's take a look:</p>

<p>1. I'm going to show this one first because it's not really a coverage breakdown, it's more of a technique/pride breakdown. I am also going to use this play to point out concerns from <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/washington-redskins" class="sbn-auto-link">Redskins</a> Nation that need to be squashed. On this play, Haslett has the LB and slot CB blitzing which leaves <span>Everette Brown</span> in coverage. Here is what needs to be squashed: You can't always complain about who is in coverage. The idea behind bringing someone the offense doesn't expect may require someone dropping into coverage that you don't expect. You also don't plan on the TE, <span>Coby Fleener</span> to have enough time to run 10 yards upfield and then 10 yards across on a climb route. The blitz is suppose to get there. It's called a gamble for a reason. Rushing the same four guys doesn't do anything to confuse the offense.</p>

<p>Fleener catches the pass here with E.Brown trailing him and Ryan Clark just needs to make this tackle. Fleener is not the fleetest of foot.</p>

<p>2. Route combination look familiar? It should. Teams have been running this against us constantly because we haven't shown consistency in stopping it. The Scissor combo has wreaked havoc on our Cover 3 and Cover 4 defenses because the CB (<span>David Amerson</span> and <span>Bashaud Breeland</span> have both been guilty) carries the Post route too far inside and doesn't keep his head on a swivel, missing the wheel route developing on the outside. Except this time, we're in a Cover 2 man.</p>

<p>Except no one told <span>Trent Murphy</span>......who gets a jam on Coby Fleener but then releases him and heads to cover the flat. Fleener, of course, is running the wheel route.</p>

<p>As you can see, Breeland (top of the screen) is in man coverage, the RB that leaks into the flat gets picked up by a LB in Man coverage and David Amerson carries the post inside (this time, he's suppose to) in man coverage. Murphy is just standing in the flat and even if <span>Brandon Meriweather</span> saw Fleener, the post route is acting almost like a screen. If Meriweather saw it sooner, he could have alerted "wheel" to Amerson but we all know the secondary isn't known for their communication.</p>
<p>Side note: Anyone mad that Trent Murphy would have been lined in man coverage against Coby Fleener? You shouldn't be. <a href="https://www.stampedeblue.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Colts</a> came out in 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE) and Redskins stayed in their base look to counter the run package.</p>

I'm going to jump towards the end of the game real quick because we had the exact same play call against the exact same route combination except this time the Colts are in 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE) so the Redskins are in their nickel package. (Also, <span>Phillip Thomas</span> is in for Brandon Meriweather now.)</p>

<p>Scissors concept at the top. I wonder why the Colts went to this late in the game when they already had a big lead. It's probably as simple as "this will probably work." I also want you to notice how tight Amerson's alignment is at the top of the screen.</p>

<p>The receiver gives a little shake and Amerson jumps inside about two yards. He loses instantly. It's crazy that a guy with his length can't press a receiver.</p>

<p>Amerson is trailing the outside receiver here. As Amerson looks back at <span>Andrew Luck</span>, he sees <span>T.Y. Hilton</span> breaking to the outside for the wheel route. Remember the endless times I begged that David Amerson to have his head on a swivel? Well, when you're in Cover 2 man, that's about the only time you CAN'T do that.</p>

<p>So naturally, this is when he does it. Amerson turns his hips outside and breaks on the wheel route. Problem #1. You left your man in man coverage without letting anyone know to pick up your man. Problem #2. Bashaud Breeland has him in man coverage and has the wheel route already covered. Problem #3. <span>Phillip Thomas</span> is also seeing that wheel route which leaves the post route completely unattended. Andrew Luck wanted to throw the wheel route so bad but with no pass rush, he was able to double -clutch, reset his feet and find the post route.</p>

<p>4. From this look, Andrew Luck already knows (barring a ridiculous disguise), this is either Cover 1 or Cover 3 with the single high safety. Luck sees press coverage at the bottom of the screen so he knows regardless of Cover 1 or Cover 3, he may have a shot there. So Luck is going to try and look at Fleener who is also running a fly route to draw Ryan Clark over so he can take his shot at the bottom.</p>

<p>What wasn't planned was for <span>Chris Baker</span> to get such quick penetration. It looks like Andrew Luck has no choice but to roll right, right? Because of this, Ryan Clark goes in this direction as there is only one route on this side of the field.</p>

<p>But Luck rolls right and then back up into the middle of the pocket, when he sees Ryan Clark has come over the top of the route at the bottom of the screen, he knows the middle of the field is vacated and he either has Coby Fleener in a one on one situation or in a busted zone. It was Cover 3, so it was a busted zone. Luckily, this is one of the worst drops of all time and isn't a touchdown somehow.</p>

<p>5. This is just David Amerson and his eye discipline. Amerson is at the bottom of the screen standing over a hitch route with a sail route coming from the slot. Amerson is in Cover 3 so he is responsible for the bottom 3rd of the field.</p>

<p>Looking beyond the box score to see how the Redskins utilized their offensive players in Week 13</p> <p>Many fans and analysts have pointed out that, over the course of the last two weeks, the Washington Redskins' offense has only produced six points off of the six turnovers created by the team's defense. Sure, that statistic makes the offense look horrible right now, but the hard truth is that this is nothing new for the 2014 Redskins. Well, maybe the defense causing so many takeaways is a turn for the better, but the offense not doing anything with them has just simply become old-hat at this point.</p>
<p>Prior to last week's loss to the 49ers, the Redskins had only forced nine turnovers on the season. That's bad in and of it of itself, but what's worse is that the offense was only able muster twelve points off of those nine turnovers. That's right, the offense scored 1.3 points per turnover in Weeks 1 through 11, not much better than the 1 point scored per turnover in Weeks 12 through 13. You also may have already deduced that the offense has not scored a single touchdown off of the takeaways produced by the defense and special teams this year.</p>
<p>When we add it all up that comes to 15 takeaways (ranked 24th), 18 points off of turnovers (31st) scored via 6 field goals, a 40% scoring rate off of turnovers and 1.2 points scored per turnover (32nd) for Washington in 2014. It's almost as if the Redskins' offense is so surprised when the putrid defensive or special teams units produces a takeaway that they don't even know what to do with it. <h4>The Offense ran 80 snaps</h4>

<li> <b>58</b> <b>Passing Snaps</b> (73%) and <b>22 Rushing Snaps</b> (27%)</li>
<li>The 80 total snaps run by the offense were the second most of the season behind only the 84 offensive snaps in the Week 2 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.</li>
<li>The offense set new seasons-highs in passing snaps (58) and passing snap percentage (73%).</li>
<li>Jay Gruden dialed up passes on 74% of the Redskins first-half plays (23 of 31 snaps). Washington never trailed by more than 11 points in the first half. The Skins' passing percentage dipped slightly in the second half to 71% (35 of 49). This is somewhat concerning, because I'm afraid that now that Gruden has his "pocket passer" that he will want to sling it all over the yard and that he'll once again begin to stray from any semblance of a commitment to the running game. This will certainly be something to monitor going forward with Colt McCoy at quarterback.<br> </li>
<li>The Redskins were tied with the Colts during their first 3 snaps (4%) and held the lead over them for the next 3 snaps (4%). They trailed Indianapolis on the other 74 offensive snaps (92%). </li>
<li>The 14 drives for the Washington offense are tied for the most in a game this season (Week 6 at Arizona).</li>
<li>The average starting field position was at the 33-yard line. That is the second best mark on the season (38.08 against the Jaguars).</li>
<li>The offense was responsible for five of the team's ten accepted penalties (38 yards). Trent Williams was the guilty party on two of these (false start and holding) and got off the hook on an illegal formation infraction that that was declined by Indianapolis. <li>The heavy offensive workload contributed to a number of players seeing season-high snap totals including: Colt McCoy, Shawn Lauvao, Tom Compton, Santana Moss, Jordan Reed and Alfred Morris.</li>
<li>DeSean Jackson's injury caused him to miss the final 24 plays of the game; Santana Moss and Ryan Grant were the main beneficiaries of his absence. Moss and Grant recorded 78% and 86% of their respective snaps after Jackson went down late in the third quarter. Moss even recorded two targets and two catches, which marks the first time since Week 2 that a Redskins' receiver other than Jackson, Garcon or Roberts has recorded a reception. Yes, you read that right.</li>
<li>Moss took 78% (21 of 27) of his snaps from the slot, which bumped Washington's primary slot receiver, Andre Roberts, to the outside to fill Jackson's role. Only 48% of Robert's snaps were from the slot in this one, his lowest percentage of the year.</li>
<li>Alfred Morris was the lead back on a season-high 36 passing snaps (63%). A whopping 95% of Roy Helu's snaps (21 of 22) also came when the Redskins passed the ball, his highest percentage of passing plays on the year. Morris once again handled all of the work when the offense used "heavier" personnel looks (21, 22 and 23). Meanwhile, Roy Helu saw 86% of his snaps come in the 11 grouping.</li>
<li>The Redskins passed on 78% of Jordan Reed's 50 snaps. Reed took the vast majority of his snaps from the 11 personnel grouping (86%). He did however cede much of his usual 12 personnel work to Logan Paulsen this week. Like Alfred Morris, Paulsen was in on all eight of the snaps from the 21, 22 and 23 groupings.</li>

<p>Looking beyond the box score to see how the Redskins utilized their defensive players in Week 13</p> <p>The Washington Redskins have the worst secondary in the NFL, and it was evident on Sunday against Andrew Luck and the Colts' high-powered passing attack. Washington defensive backs blew coverage assignments on several occasions, allowing Indianapolis receivers to run unmolested in the Redskins' backfield and score four touchdowns of 30 or more yards. They also failed to catch Colts' running back, Dan Herron, en route to a 49-yard rushing touchdown.</p>
<p>Are they really the worst in the NFL though? After all, this did happen against one of the league's best quarterbacks and the defense ranks 15th in passing yards allowed. Unfortunately for the Redskins, statistics that look at season-long totals are often the most misleading of stats, and that is certainly true in this case.</p>
<p>Here are some efficiency rankings that paint a much more accurate picture of the quality of the Redskins' secondary: 28th in interceptions, 30th in passing touchdowns allowed, 31st in QB rating allowed and 32nd in yards per attempt allowed. The Redskins' secondary is also considered to be extremely poor by advanced metrics sites; both <a href="http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef">Football Outsiders</a> and <a href="https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.profootballfocus.com%2Fdata%2Fby_team.php%3Ftab%3Dby_team&referrer=sbnation.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hogshaven.com%2F2014%2F12%2F1%2F7313797%2Fsnap-judgments-week-13-redskins-colts-defense" rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Pro Football Focus</a> have the Redskins as the 31st ranked team in pass coverage (separated out from pass rushing). <a href="http://www.advancedfootballanalytics.com/index.php/home/stats/advanced-team-stats">Advanced Football Analytics</a> has the Redskins passing defense ranked dead last in expected points added and expected points added per play.</p>
<p>The offensive line, defensive line and the quarterback position are all areas of major concern for this team, but are the Redskins really thinner in any area more than they are in the secondary? I knew it was bad, but this game really showcased just how dire the need for help in the secondary is. What I didn't know, was what I was going to write about in this space, but after I unwittingly created a poll that listed every secondary position as a position in need of an upgrade it became clear that this needed to be discussed. It should also be very clear to the Washington Redskins that the secondary is their primary area of concern.</p>
<h4>51 Snaps were run against the Defense</h4>
<p id="paragraph3" class="pgh-paragraph"><b>29 Passing Snaps</b> (57%)</p>
<p id="paragraph4" class="pgh-paragraph"><b>22 Rushing Snaps</b> (43%)</p>
<ul>
<li>The 51 defensive snaps is the third lowest total for the Redskins in 2014 (50 snaps against the Jaguars and Buccaneers).</li>
<li>The Redskins' defense faced off against the Colts' offense on 13 drives in yesterday's game. The Colts scored touchdowns on six of those drives (46%). They also turned it over and punted three times each.</li>
<li>The defense was responsible for three of the Redskins' ten accepted penalties (20 yards). Ryan Kerrigan and Jarvis Jenkins were called for neutral zone infractions and Chase Minnfield was flagged for pass interference. David Amerson and Bashaud Breeland committed illegal use of hands penalties on back-to-back first-quarter plays; both penalties were declined because the plays resulted in a first down and a touchdown respectively.</li>

<li>The defense was only able to force a third down on 8 of the Colts' 26 offensive sets of downs. That rate of 31% is incredibly low. This had a lot to do with the Colts quickly finishing most of their drives with long touchdown plays or the rare turnover when they were either feeling generous or sorry for the Redskins.</li>
<li>When the Redskins weren't allowing the Colts to run free in the secondary and hit long touchdown bombs, they actually did a decent job of keeping Indianapolis out of short yardage situations on second and third down. The Colts' offense faced second-and-long and third-and-long on 60% and 75% of their respective plays from those downs.</li>
<li>Even those efforts were all for naught though, as the defense allowed Indianapolis to convert on five of their eight 3rd-down attempts (63%). </li>

This week marked the 7 year anniversary of Taylor's passing, and Landry appears to have paid tribute to his fallen former teammate by wearing the facemask tape that Taylor made famous after a confrontation with former Redskins Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams. It was recently featured in the A Football Life episode highlighting Taylor's life. <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/09/30/gregg-williams-still-has-sean-taylors-taped-up-facemask/">Gregg Williams still has Taylor's facemask in his office to this day</a>.</p>
