Redskins NT Chris Baker was fined $10,000 by the NFL for grabbing Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer's facemask and pulling his helmet off. Redskins WR DeSean Jackson was fined $16,537 for a horse collar tackle on Cardinals' DB Rashad Johnson. He was returning an interception from Kirk Cousins during the 4th quarter, and Jackson pulled him down from behind as he was going out of bounds. Neither play was penalized on the field during the game, which was surprising considering how blatant they were.

This is Jackson's first fine this season, but this is the second time Baker has been fined within the last month. He received an $8,268 fine last month for grabbing Philadelphia Eagles LT Jason Peters' facemask. Peters charged after Baker, following a hit on Eagles QB Nick Foles on an interception return that was later ruled incomplete. This caused a bench clearing brawl which surprisingly only resulted in Baker and Peters receiving fines for their roles.

Turnovers mar another good chance...

A banged up Redskins team traveled all the way out to Arizona and got beat by a banged up Arizona Cardinals team. All week we wondered which Cardinal QB we'd face and in typical Redskin fashion, we got a healthy Carson Palmer. It was a tale of Kirk Cousins keep us in the game (with excellent play from DeSean Jackson) until he took us out of it. Many around here (myself included) inexplicably expected the Redskins to win or at least have a very good chance against a team that was 3-1 and playing at home. I'm not sure why, and the Cardinals proved us delusional. There were a lot of positives to take away, especially in the first three quarters, but the final stanza really doomed us. We've all tried to remain positive through this losing streak, but even Jay Gruden seems to be feeling a little worn down by it and at 1-5, it's really difficult to see the positive in this season anymore... already. Still, we must remember we were a terrible team last year and have a new coaching staff and many injuries. We're in the process of building from where we ended last year and everyone should have known there'd be plenty of "L"s to come along with that. Are we progressing?

Pros:

DeSean Jackson

DeSean Jackson has been the brightest of bright spots for our team this year, showing off that patented speed/deep threat ability and the ability to change the course of a series and break a game wide open. He lacks in the blocking department, but his HR ability gives us a chance to get right back in any game faster than a NY minute. This week it was a simple slant route in which we took a perfectly placed ball from Kirk Cousins just passed a smothering Patrick Peterson over 60 yards to the house. He followed that up with another 50+ yard gallop only to be tripped up before crossing the goal-line (we had to settle for a FG). Kirk seems to have great chemistry with the guy and he's basically been our offense of late.

Jordan Reed

It's wonderful being a Redskins fan when Jordan Reed is on the field. When healthy, he's a rare and unique talent as a pass-catching TE. The guy has speed, moves, agility, route-running, hands... the whole package. After missing most of the season with a hamstring injury, Reed stepped back into the lineup against Arizona and proceeded to be a featured player in Jay Gruden's offense. He caught everything, or so it seemed. He has a unique talent for getting open with a grace not commonly found in men of his size. When he's healthy, our offense is much better.

Trent Williams

If you didn't know Trent was dealing with knee trouble from reading about it, you wouldn't be able to tell from his play on the field. He's been a warrior these past couple games and it continued this past Sunday. From providing a clean pocket for Kirk Cousins, to sealing an edge in the run game, to getting up the field and pancaking some poor unsuspecting defender on a screen play, he's got a combination of strength, athleticism, and size that you just don't find. Add onto that that he's tough as nails and a great leader for our offense and you have a cornerstone for this franchise. I know our team has been bad, but we're lucky to have this guy on our side and get to watch him do work for the burgundy and gold as his career unfolds.

The Whole Entire FG/P/Kicking Unit (Can't Quite Say ST's as a Whole, Yet)

Kai Forbath has been excellent on FG's and KO's. Tress Way has been awesome holding for kicks and punting. And both have had excellent protection lately. This is a noticeable improvement in what was perhaps the weakest part of this team earlier in the season. The coverage and return units still need to improve, but it's huge when you can rely on your kicking and punting games. We were getting touchbacks! It's the little things for Redskins fans...

Penalties (or Lack Thereof)

We're winning the penalty battle the last couple weeks and that's not something we could say earlier in the season. It's kept us in our last couple games and it's a sign of improvement and makes me think our coaching staff is getting something right. I like the general discipline on penalties lately and it continued against Arizona.

Cons:

Fourth Quarter Kirk Cousins

He was doing so good up until that point... and then the wheels came off. The INT's have been unbearable. They really are killer. It's brutal when you think we have multiple chances, even after the first INT or two, and then another one happens. They're very hard to explain and it doesn't feel right to put all the blame on Kirk. Still, even he admitted that the three at the end of this game were all basically his fault. He was pressured, but nothing too crazy and the throws were either just really off the mark or he simply didn't even see a defender. It's basically impossible to win when quarter like that (or the second half against the Giants happen).

Run Game

It's concerning at this point. The blocking's not there. The carries aren't there. Defenses are taking it away and one of our greatest weapons has been neutralized. It's very difficult to explain. On the one hand, we're not running the ball a whole lot. Does that cause our run game to suffer? Or are we not running a whole lot because our run game is suffering. Decide amongst yourselves. As for me, I'm not entirely sure, yet. I know one thing, though. We absolutely have to fix it because with Kirk Cousins and the OL as currently constructed, we cannot win without it.

Defensive Playmakers

I don't want to simply say "defense" because we limited the Cardinals yardage fairly well and because the defense stopped the Cardinals and gave our offense repeated chances in the latter half of the game to make plays. Still though, where are the sacks? Where are the INT's? Where's the pressure? We're getting none of it. Our defense is about as bland as can be right now and certainly, some of that has to go to Jim Haslett. At this point, we're decimated with injuries and lack some serious talent in the secondary, but we just have to try some crazy stuff and see what happens because it really isn't going to get any worse and we're not winning, anyway. Orakpo needs a sack or two. Where's our secondary? Can anyone get a pick? How about a strip? A sack-fumble? Anything. We need something to spark this team.

Tyler Polumbus

Come on, man.

Final Grade: D

We were in this one. We had a real chance and there for a while, I thought we might take it. We keep finding ways to lose. I know everyone keeps hearing that all the time, but think about it. It makes perfect sense and is the truth. The Cardinals didn't beat us that game. We beat ourselves. Just when you think we're out of it, we have another chance. And another. And another. And somehow we continue to squander those opportunities. The turnovers are the story for me. We simply can't afford them. It was shocking to watch Kirk go out there in the fourth quarter and throw darts directly to Cardinals players. Shocking.

The Cardinals are a decent team, but they were as banged up, if not more so, than we were. Carson Palmer wasn't 100% and has missed multiple weeks now with a shoulder/nerve issue. He looked incredibly comfortable out there. That's a problem, especially when our defense's strength is touted as the front seven and rushing the passer.

We have about as favorable an opponent as we can get coming up this week in the Titans and they're coming to FedEx (yes, they think we're an incredibly favorable match-up, too). We have to start somewhere. We're at the bottom now. It's time to show some growth. It's time for a win and to get this thing going in the right direction. I'm not talking about winning out. I'm talking about not beating ourselves and playing respectably. I'm talking about winning home games against teams like the Titans. I don't think this roster can be great, but I do think they can be better than they've shown over this 1-5 start. Let's get to 2-5, build a little confidence, and move forward. We deserve it.

Looking beyond the box score to see how the Redskins utilized their offensive players in Week 6

At 1-5, the season is all but lost. At this point it's hard to call the Redskins anything but one of the worst teams in the NFL. However, was it fair of us to expect much more given the situation? This is a team that has not had a first-round pick in two years and that just came off of a 36 million dollar cap penalty. A team led by a rookie head coach and offensive coordinator, a second-year special teams coordinator and a highly overrated defensive coordinator. They are bereft of talent and depth because of the lost cap space and draft picks, and we expected three somewhat green coaches and an annually under-performing defensive boss to lead them to what? The playoffs?

I had them going 8-8 this year and starting off with a 2-4 record. If you told me that they would lose Jordan Reed, Robert Griffin III and DeAngelo Hall to significant injuries in three successive weeks to start the season, then I may very well have dropped my prediction for the first six games to 1-5. Where would you have had them if you had really considered the situation and if you knew about the injuries ahead of time?

We need to start recognizing this season for what it is: a rebuilding year. It actually may have been all along, even in spite of our bad injury luck. Hopefully, the Redskins can finish out the year on a hot streak that will carry over into 2015 and along the way we can discover which current players are worthy of being mainstays in the Jay Gruden era. The playing time that the players receive going forward and how they produce with those opportunities will provide more than a few clues about which players will be in the Redskins' long-term plans.

The Offense ran 60 snaps

43 Passing Snaps (72%) and 17 Rushing Snaps (28%)

This is the third consecutive week in which the Redskins have set or matched their season-low in rushing snaps and rushing snap percentage.

Washington trailed Arizona during 38 offensive snaps (63%), was tied with them on 16 snaps (27%) and led them on 6 snaps (10%). The offense had not been on the field with a lead since the Week 3 matchup against the Eagles.

According to the ESPN play-by-play log, the Redskins ran three no-huddle snaps on Sunday (5%).

The Redskins scored on four their fourteen drives. They also committed a turnover on four drives (all in the fourth quarter). The 14th and final drive of the game lasted just one play before time expired.

Washington trailed for the entire second half and passed the ball 22 times (81% of the second half plays) in their attempt to make the road comeback. This included a stretch of 19 straight passing plays from the 3:37 mark in the third quarter through the second to last play of the game. I know the running game was not effective and that they were down, but 19 straight?

The offense was responsible for three of the team's six penalties. All three penalties were false start infractions (15 combined yards lost). Logan Paulsen, Tyler Polumbus and Chris Chester were the guilty parties.

The good news is that both the number and percentage of third-snaps against the Cardinals were the second lowest this season; the bad news is that this probably had something to do with four of the fourteen drives ending on a first-down play (fumble, interception, interception and time expired).

The Redskins lived on their side of the field in this one. The 49 offensive snaps and 82% of snaps on their own side of the field were season-highs (or lows depending on how you look at it). Field position has been a major issue over the course of the last three weeks.

Fifteen of the offenses' sixty snaps (25%) were from the pistol formation. This is the team's highest usage of this formation in a 2014 Kirk Cousins start.

The Redskins matched their season-high for screen plays (four) before the first half had even ended. They called six total in the game (five to receivers and one to a running back). These plays were extremely successful, as five of the six passes resulted in gains of 15, 42, 9, 33 and 22 yards.

There were 21 active offensive players in this game. All of them except Josh LeRibeus, Silas Redd and Colt McCoy recorded an offensive snap. Aldrick Robinson, Spencer Long, Morgan Moses and Robert Griffin were declared inactive. For the first time this year Santana Moss was active and Aldrick Robinson was not. Moss recorded one snap on the day. Colt McCoy is now the only offensive player on the roster that has not recorded a snap.

Aldrick Robinson has one reception (on a screen pass) over the course of his 25 snaps this year.

Roy Helu out-snapped Alfred Morris for the second week in a row. Helu handled 11 of the 12 combined third and fourth-down snaps (92%), and 31 of his 34 snaps came on passing plays.

Alfred Morris, Darrel Young, Ryan Grant, Tom Compton and Logan Paulsen all saw season-low snap totals and percentages. Roy Helu, Jordan Reed, Pierre Garcon and Andre Roberts all posted season-high snap percentages.

I forgot how much of a non-traditional tight end Jordan Reed was. He lined up out wide (15 snaps/43%), in the slot (8 snaps/23%) or as a running back (2 snaps/6%) on 25 of his 35 snaps (71%).

Team Records, Streaks & Rankings:

Individual Players

Alfred Morris followed up what was probably the worst game of his career last week, with what very well may have been his second worst game. His 41 rushing yards and 3.15 yards per attempt were his fourth and fifth worse in a game respectively. He dropped a pass, did not score and for the first time in his career he did not rush for a first down. I know there are some extenuating circumstances that are effecting his production, but something seems wrong here.

Jordan Reed has played on over 50% of the offenses snaps in 6 of his 11 career games. Reed has averaged 9 targets, 6.5 receptions and 79 yards receiving in those games. If you're still having a hard time remembering how good he is (when he's healthy), then check this out.

Kirk Cousins is now 1-7 as a starter and the Redskins are 1-9 in the last 10 games that he has appeared in. In his 13 total games, he has scored 18 touchdowns and thrown 18 interceptions. He threw three interceptions in a single quarter twice in the last three weeks. Robert Griffin has thrown 17 interceptions in 30 career games and has never thrown three in a game. Help me RGIII, you're my only hope.

DeSean Jackson's 26 receptions and 20 touchdowns of 50 yards or more since 2008 leads the NFL. He is now in the top ten for most career 50-yard touchdowns by a player since 1970.

Team

So, the Redskins aren't very good on third down this year. They rank 31st in third-down conversion rate (32.4%), and they have only converted 6 third downs on their last 30 tries.

Washington has now lost nine straight games on the road. The nine consecutive road losses ties the franchise record.

The Redskins have lost 13 of their last 14 and 18 of their last 22 games. If my calculations are correct, then you cannot find a worse 14 week span in franchise history (based on the number of losses only) without including one of weeks 6, 7, 8 or 9 from the 1961 season. That means that the current 14 week span is tied for 5th worst in franchise history. The current 22 week span is tied for 12th worst in franchise history. Make no mistake about it, we are in the midst of one of the worst periods in the franchise's 83 year and 1,144 game history. Hopefully, things will begin to turn around with a win against the Titans in Week 7.
