Oscar Aparacio of the Better Rivals Podcast joins the Porkcast to reflect on the Redskins-Niners week 7 slop-fest

While the Redskins took on the Vikings on Thursday night, the Porkcast crew was welcomed by a special guest to dissect the prior week’s performance, a sloppy, messy, mud-fest defeat of the Washington at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers. Oscar Aparicio of the Better Rivals podcast from Niners Nation shared his reflections on the contest and some insights on how the season has gone thus far for a squad that others may have slept on.

Ever the gracious guest, Oscar called out some the highlights of the Redskins’ performance and offered an outsider’s perspective on the bright spots for the team, namely why Matt Ioannidis is underrated even by our own standards.

We offered up a hypothesis, that these two squads are not all that dissimilar: with young(ish) disliked owners, stadia far geographically removed from their downtown locales, and with a wealth of history and success that seems increasingly distant in retrospect. Oscar, however, offered his thoughts on why despite these similarities the 49ers are better positioned for the future, and what the Redskins need to do to get back to a winning culture that can remove the bad taste from the fan base's collective mouths.

Finally, Oscar makes his case to the Porkcast for why we should hop on the Niners bandwagon for the second half of the 2019 season.

The Redskins RB group is hurting right now, and they face a short week where they will travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings on Thursday Night Football. Adrian Peterson injured his ankle on Sunday during a play where he fumbled against the 49ers. Bill Callahan said he was scheduled for an MRI today and now we know the results.

Adrian Peterson told ESPN's Josina Anderson that he suffered a grade 1 high ankle sprain and a grade 2 low ankle sprain. He also added that he's good, which seems like an overly optimistic outlook considering his injuries. Peterson played through multiple injuries last season, but there is no word on whether he will be good for a short week game againt his former team.

Peterson has been interim Head Coach Bill Callahan's workhorse since taking over for Jay Gruden. Callahan has said loudly and often that he wants to run the ball, and AP was his guy. The Redskins were missing their current #2 RB Chris Thompson on Sunday as he dealt with turf toe.

If both backs can't go this week, the Redskins will only have two RBs and a fullback on the 53-man roster. Wendell Smallwood saw some action this week and will definitely get a lot of carries if Peterson and Thompson are out. Craig Reynolds was signed from the practice squad last week, and Josh Ferguson was recently added to the PS. Washington also finally added a FB when they signed Michael Burton.

Is this the low point of the season, or do the ’Skins have further to sink?

It was an all-around ugly game, as three hours of pouring rain at FedEx Field made the Redskins even tougher to watch this Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t play well but managed to secure a shutout for the first time in over seven years in a 9-0 victory. Coming off their first win of the season over the Miami Dolphins, Washington (1-6) entered the game as 10-point underdogs to the unbeaten ’Niners.

Under interim head coach Bill Callahan, Washington started the game with 10 consecutive runs as running back Adrian Peterson averaged over six yards per carry on the opening drive. The former offensive line coach emphasized the Redskins’ running game, which gained 4.0 yards per carry on 26 carries.

In the first half, both the Redskins and 49ers missed 39- and 45-yard field goals, respectively, though neither team turned it over before the break. Neither offense could get anything going, and the scoreboard read all zeroes at the half.

A 28-yard field goal by Robbie Gould gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead and broke the scoring drought with less than six minutes to play in the third quarter.

Then, a 19-yard pass from quarterback Case Keenum to wide receiver Trey Quinn gave Washington life and put the Redskins within the San Francisco 30-yard line was erased on the next play after a fumble from Peterson. The future Hall of Famer had 20 carries for 81 yards, an average of 4.1 per carry, on the day.

Gould tacked on another field goal with just over nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter, and though San Francisco led by just six, it felt like a 20-point deficit for an anemic Washington offense. The Redskins gained just 154 yards, only 3.8 per play, as Keenum went 9-for-12 for 77 yards. Rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. didn’t see the field.

The final nail in the coffin was a 29-yard field goal with 23 seconds to play.

Washington looks to rebound on a short week as it travels to face former starting quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. The Redskins appear to be a 14.5-point underdog, according to Odds Shark, and would drop to 1-7 with another loss.
