Overall, we’ve got to learn from the experiences that we had on Sunday, but we’ve got to make sure we get off on third downs, that’s huge. That was a situation where we just didn’t get off on third downs and it extends drives with an offense like that, that they have with so many potent receivers, you’ve got to make sure you make plays when the opportunity arises.”

"Well there is a lot of pick routes going on in the league. Sometimes they are a little bit beyond two yards or one yard that they say and not everybody catches those. We got a couple of calls with one or two last week, but I’m just saying it’s where you have to balance. If the team’s doing it, you’ve got to make sure you get in a situation where you are playing a little bit of zone then man. We’ll go back and forth based upon the down and distance. It’s huge nowadays, they give you one yard, which they fudged about two or three, but we’ll see.”

Pass rush vs the Falcons:

"It was a good offensive line. Overall, I think they had some big bodies up front. I think we got there a couple of times, we were in his face a couple of times but good quarterbacks make those throws. He did, so I think that he’s a good quarterback and then the receivers that he has are very talented. So overall, he made some throws, we didn’t execute sometimes and that’s what happened.”

Where do the Redskins rank going into Week 10 of the 2018 season?

The Redskins game vs the Falcons on Sunday was a complete disaster, and the losses suffered that day put the team’s playoff push in jeopardy. They are still in 1st place in the NFC East, but the Eagles are one game behind. Washington lost both their starting guards and their free agent WR for the season. They’re signing guys off the street to play on the offensive line this week. It’s deja vu all over again.

The Redskins were on the rise in the power rankings after a 3 game win streak and 1st place in the division. They dropped across the board this week, and another loss will put them in a spiral. The Redskins play the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay this week.

The Washington Redskins had been one of the NFL’s more pleasant surprises this year—a perceived also-ran that had ridden a stout defense and a solid running game to first place in the NFC East.

That all came crashing down around them in Week 9.

The Redskins were embarrassed at home by the Falcons. That defense allowed almost 500 yards of total offense, 38 points and third-down conversions on 10 of 13 attempts. Atlanta had nearly twice as many rushing yards as the Redskins.

Adrian Peterson carried the ball just nine times for 17 yards. Alex Smith topped 300 passing yards, but much of that was in garbage time after Washington fell way behind.

It’s possible it was just one of those weeks—even good teams sometime lay an egg.

Or it could be that we overestimated how good these Redskins really are. That they were exposed by Atlanta.

”Washington wasn’t quite ready for the big time,” Sobleski said. “Just when it looked like Jay Gruden’s squad could really establish itself among the league’s upper echelon, the team fell flat on its face with a 38-14 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The NFC East is still wide-open since Washington could pull away from its rivals.”

The Redskins placed three starters on injured reserve Monday (guards Brandon Scherff and Shawn Lauvao and receiver Paul Richardson).
Atlanta came into Fedex Field and handled their business, dropping the Redskins to 5-3. Here is what we learned from the week that was.

Well, that was rough. The Redskins fall to 5-3 following the beat down handed to them courtesy of the surging Atlanta Falcons. To add to the misery, Washington loses Paul Richardson Jr., Brandon Scherff, and Shawn Lauvao to season-ending injuries. It was ugly all-around for so many reasons, and what once was a promising outlook to the final stretch of the season has turned into a bleak and demoralizing week heading into the Redskins game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All in all, it seems terrible now, but games still have to be played, and the Redskins must adapt to new circumstances. In the meantime, let us look at the things we learned from the game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Will the Redskins be able to keep up with anyone, at all?

The Redskins performances in wins compared to losses are night and day to each other, and it is just amazing. In each victory, the Redskins never trailed and had gotten off to fast starts in four of the five victories. However, in each of the three losses, they never had a lead, nor was the game close. The average margin of victory for the Redskins opponents are 20 points per game, they have been completely manhandled in all three losses. With the loss among the offensive line, especially pro bowlers Trent Williams and Brandon Scherff, the task will be even more significant to establish the line of scrimmage and a rushing attack. Without a rushing attack and an effective Adrian Peterson, the offense is a tad worse than anemic, so whatever adjective you have in mind is exactly what they are. The Redskins defense failed to show up in two of the Redskins three losses; however, if the Redskins are unable to put up points to give this team a chance to win against more efficient offenses (i.e., Tampa Bay coming up) they will be in big trouble.

Speaking of the defense, the Redskins had a great test to show New Orleans was a fluke and failed just as bad. They are good, but not an elite unit.

Greg Manusky and his defensive staff have these guys playing well collectively, for the most part, this is the unit that gives the Redskins the best chance to win week in-and-out. However, in two outings against high powered offenses, they were thoroughly outplayed. The biggest threats to the Redskins defense coming up will be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles, and possibly the Houston Texans. For obvious reasons, the Redskins are reeling right now, so regardless of how they are perceived from an outsider’s perspective, they must respond against the Buccaneers if they want to save the season.

Quit the talk of “players effort” the issue in these losses are execution and coaching

Wherever you want to place the majority of the blame for losses is up to you, but other teams were just better than Washington. The effort is there, and they are not merely a lifeless team. So whether it is the fact that the Redskins struggle to move the football, defend simple route concepts, exploit a team’s defensive weaknesses, or apply more pressure on opposing offenses, the Redskins players and staff fail to get the job done. Saying that is not by any means a consolation prize for how they look when they lose, because they have to do a significantly better job. Moving forward in the season there is no doubt there should be some pressure on Jay Gruden to address the vulnerabilities on his team that has been consistently attacked by opposing teams. The task will become greater due to injuries but at this point, five years into his coaching stint, excuses have run dry, and he must get the job done.

No, it is not time to bench Alex Smith, and that time will never arrive; however, it is officially okay to hit a panic button. If you have one.

You can argue that Alex Smith had his best game as a Redskin in a 14-point offensive outing against Atlanta, but what is that saying? It says absolutely nothing. The Redskins struggled to move the ball against an Atlanta Falcons defense who was giving up 28 points per game. Overall, Alex Smith has not been good, and there has been no sense of incremental improvement as the weeks went along. To what point does the play at the quarterback position dash any chances of a playoff berth this year? With five of the remaining eight games on the road for Washington, playing in hostile environments, the Redskins will desperately need for Alex Smith to become a more efficient quarterback. It seems like a longshot, but if Alex Smith can even play to the level of a top 16 quarterback, the Redskins can find a way to finish the year with double-digit victories.

The Redskins had a really bad day yesterday, but the injuries suffered during the loss to the Falcons will be felt the rest of the season. LG Shawn Lauvao was injured on the 3rd play of the game, and taken away by wheelchair for a knee injury. Another injury for the oft-injured guard.

Brandon Scherff’s injury wasn’t really shown on the broadcast, and there were no replays to pick out what happened. Alex Smith mentioned him being thrown down late, and the reaction from Jordan Reed and Morgan Moses indicated a dirty/late play from the Falcons. The pain on Scherff’s face told everyone that this could be a bad injury, and it looked like it was in the pec/shoulder area. Jay Gruden said that both offensive linemen would be getting MRI’s today.

That was not pretty

The Redskins came into today’s game at 5-2 and in first place in the NFC East. Only one of those things will change today as the Redskins division lead got a little slimmer. The Redskins were completely dominated in all three phases of the game(offense, defense, officiating). Washington is not a team built to come back from a deficit and are 0-3 in games they have been trailing the other team this year.
