A look at the stats and snap counts for every defensive and special teams player on the Redskins in the team's Week 10 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings

Snaps- Greg Manusky used 18 of his 25 defenders over the course of the defense’s 61 snaps against the Vikings.

The group of 7 players that did not take a snap on defense was made up of 2 inactives (Matt Ioannidis and Montae Nicholson) and 5 defensive players who worked exclusively on special teams (Chris Carter, Josh Harvey-Clemmons, Quinton Dunbar, Joshua Holsey and Fabian Moreau).

Yards- The defense allowed over 400 yards (406 yards) for the second consecutive week and for the third time this season.

The Redskins rank 23rd in total yards allowed (344.6), 17th in yards per drive allowed (29) and 22nd in yards per play allowed (5.5).

Points- The Vikings hung up 38 points on the Redskins’ defense. You have to go back to the 2016 opener against the Steelers to find the last time the Burgundy and Gold gave up that many points. The other time they gave up 38 or more points in the last three years was in Week 15 of the 2015 season (Panthers).

The Vikings’ touchdown on their opening drive of the game snapped the Skins’ streak of seven straight games without allowing their opponents to score on their opening drive.

Quarterback Pressure- Unfortunately, that was not the only favorable defensive streak snapped on Sunday.

The Redskins’ defense did not record a sack for the first time in their last 33 games. The 32-game sack streak was the longest active such streak in the NFL and the second longest streak in franchise history (60 consecutive games with a sack between 1984 and 1987).

Washington pass rushers were also only able to register a season-low 2 QB hits, despite the fact that Case Keenum took about 30 dropbacks in the game.

On a positive note, the Redskins still rank 1st in the NFL in defensive pressure rate (32.7% per ESPN and 37.5% per Football Outsiders).

Third Down- Minnesota picked up first downs on 8 of their 12 third-down plays. The 8 third-down conversions ties the season-high set in Week 1 against the Eagles. This was the first time since Week 16 of last season that an opponent moved the chains on two-thirds or more of their third downs against the Redskins.

The defense’s 42.9% third-down conversion rate allowed ranks 26th in the NFL.

Red Zone- The Vikings scored touchdowns on all five of their trips to the red zone. This was the first time all season the Washington defense has allowed more than three red zone scores and that their opponents have converted on 100% of their RZ opportunities in a game where they made it to the red area three or more times.

The last time a team scored five red-zone touchdowns against the Redskins was the aforementioned 2015 beatdown by the Panthers.

Tight End Defense- The defense allowed Vikings tight ends to combine for 6 receptions, 38 yards, 3 first downs and a touchdown on 8 targets.

The yardage total was easily the lowest the Redskins have allowed to the position all season. On the other hand, this was the third time in the last four weeks that a tight end has scored against Washington.

Rushing Defense- The Vikings rushed the ball 31 times for 102 yards, 6 first downs and a touchdown. This was the fourth straight game in which Greg Manusky’s defense has given up over 100 yards on the ground; however, this was also the first time since Week 3 that the defense has held an opponent to under 3.8 YPC.

Ziggy Hood- Ziggy Hood led all Redskins D-linemen in snaps for fifth time this season. He recorded a solo and an assisted tackle, but the tackles came on back-to-back snaps in the fourth quarter. Minnesota gained 3 total yards on those plays.

Hood was the only defensive lineman and one of two players on the team to hit Keenum on Sunday. He did not record any other pressures.

Terrell McClain- After 12 tackles in his last two games combined, McClain disappeared against the Vikings on Sunday. He failed to record a single traditional snap or a pressure on his 34 snaps.

Stacy McGee- The former Raider started for the second straight week and for fifth time this year. He also played on season highs in snaps (34) and snap percentage (56%).

McGee posted new career highs in every traditional tackle statistic with 4 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles and 8 total tackles. The Vikings only gained 24 yards on his eight tackles (3-yard average), and four of them came within 2 yards of the line of scrimmage.

He was not much of a difference maker against the pass, though. All of his tackles came on running plays and he did not get any pressure on Case Keenum.

Anthony Lanier- Lanier was on the field for 22 snaps against the Vikings. This was his third straight game with a snap share above 35%; he had never played on more than 27% of the snaps prior to that. He did not make any tackles for the second straight week, but he was the only Skins’ D-lineman besides Hood with a pressure.

Brandon Banks- This was the first career game for Banks, who was signed from the practice squad on Saturday. He was in for 12 snaps and made a solo tackle on a 5-yard Latavius Murray run in the fourth quarter. He too failed to generate any pressure. Banks was waived by the team today.

Matt Ioannidis- The breakout sophomore missed his second game with a broken hand. He has a legitimate shot to return this week against the Saints, but you could also certainly see the coaches waiting to bring him back until the Thanksgiving game against the Giants. That would prevent him from playing two games in five days.

Caraun Reid- Reid was signed to the active roster today. The soon-to-be 26-year-old has played in 34 games (12 starts) and recorded 36 tackles (including 3 sacks) in his 4-year NFL career.

Ryan Kerrigan- You may not have guessed that Ryan Kerrigan led all Washington outside linebackers in snaps, because he seemed to be invisible in this game.

He tied his season-low with 1 tackle, a solo tackle on a 1-yard gain in the first quarter. Kerrigan also failed to register a QB hit for just the third time this year.

He was, however, tied for a team-high 20% pressure rate.

Preston Smith- Preston Smith didn’t have a big game either, but he was the most effective player on this unit.

He recorded a solo and an assisted tackle on one of the few drives the Vikings didn’t score on, and his QB hit on a first quarter third-down pass altered Keenum’s delivery and ultimately caused the incompletion.

Smith’s 83.4 PFF grade for the game ranked 2nd on the defense.

Junior Galette- Galette led the OLB corps with 2 solo and 3 total tackles. He pressured Keenum on several plays. Galette has consistently made one or two plays per game, but he has yet to make a major impact for the Redskins’ defense.

Ryan Anderson- Anderson recorded a tackle (1 assist) in a game for the third time this season and for the second game in a row.

He failed to pressure the opposition’s quarterback for the seventh time this year. It’s disappointing to see Anderson go o-fer as a pass rusher again, after he finally got back on the board last week.

Chris Carter- Carter’s totals for the season: 9 games, 2 defensive snaps and 0 defensive stats. Carter has only been on the field for 311 career defensive snaps and has recorded just 26 total tackles. He is purely a special teams player.

Zach Brown- Brown was in for every defensive play, and, once again, led the team in tackles. This time out, he recorded 10 tackles (5 solo and 5 assisted), one of which was a TFL.

This was Brown’s seventh double-digit tackle game of the year. This is insane, considering that only one other player has recorded 10 or more tackles in more than four games this season. That player is Blake Martinez, and he only has five games with double-digit tackles.

There are only four players who have done this four times in a 2017 game (Bobby Wagner, Deion Jones, Joe Schobert and Tyvon Branch).

Brown is tied for the league-lead in solo tackles (62) and ranks second in assisted tackles (34). His whopping 96 total tackles lead the entire NFL by a margin of 13. There are only four other players with more than 75 tackles this year, which is a bar set 20 tackles below what Brown has.

Go vote for Zach Brown to make the Pro Bowl right now.

Will Compton- Compton started for the second consecutive week and played on about half of the defensive snaps before suffering a Lisfranc sprain. He made 1 solo tackle on the day.

He was placed on injured reserve today. The 2018 free agent may have just played his last snaps as a Washington Redskin.

Martrell Spaight- Spaight came in to replace the injured Compton and acquitted himself quite nicely in the second half of the game.

On just 29 snaps, Spaight recorded 2 solo, 5 assisted and 7 total tackles. He led the team in both assists and tackles-per-opportunity rate (23%). One of his tackles was a 2-yard TFL and all seven of them came within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage. The Vikings only gained an average of 1.7 yards per play on the snaps that Spaight made a tackle on.

Believe it or not, but Spaight who ranks 17th on the defense in snaps (159), has recorded the fourth most total tackles on the team. He will get plenty of opportunities to make tackles on Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara next week.

Josh Harvey-Clemons- JHC hadn’t taken a defensive snap all season going into Week 10, and that didn’t change on Sunday. I’d like to see more behind the reason why the coaches felt it was so necessary to keep him on the active roster instead of the practice squad. He should finally get some playing time with Will Compton on the shelf.

Zach Vigil- The team signed Zach Vigil to replace Will Compton. Vigil was on the Redskins’ roster from December of last year up until the final cuts in September.

Josh Norman- This was easily Josh Norman’s worst game as a Redskin and in at least the last three years. Norman, who had only allowed 169 yards and 1 touchdown coming into the game, allowed all six of the targets thrown in his direction to be caught and gave up a season-worst 131 yards and a score on Sunday.

Norman also missed what would’ve been a drive-ending tackle on a third-down and dropped yet another interception on a Vikings’ touchdown drive.

I know Norman isn’t targeted that often, and because of this he deserves some slack in the INT department, but he is the only corner on the team who has played on more than 60 snaps without recording at least one interception.

He set new season highs in solo (7) and total tackles (9). He only topped those numbers in Week 3 of 2012, which was his third game in the NFL.

However, the reason he made so many tackles in this game, and probably in the aforementioned 2012 contest, was he was constantly tasked with tackling players that had just caught a pass against him.

Norman better get himself right in time for Sunday’s date with the Saints in the Superdome.

Bashaud Breeland- Josh Norman wasn’t alone on Sunday. Bashaud Breeland also had what was likely his worst game of the year. He gave up 6 receptions for a season-high 66 yards and a touchdown on 6 targets. The touchdown was only the second score that Breeland has surrendered in 2017.

He made 2 solo and 1 assisted tackles in the game.

Kendall Fuller- Fuller played on a season-low 35 snaps on Sunday, and his 57% snap rate was his second lowest playing time clip of the year (55% at Kansas City in Week 3).

He recorded 3 tackles and only allowed 1 reception for 9 yards and a first down on 4 targets. He was lined up opposite of Jarius Wright on Wright’s touchdown, but the pass was a screen thrown 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage, so you can’t really fault Fuller much there.

Quinton Dunbar- You would think the coaching staff might consider giving Dunbar a shot after Norman and Breeland both allowed season highs in yardage and gave up a touchdown. Nope, that is not what happened at all.

Dunbar did not receive a single defensive snap, despite the fact he started in each of the team’s last four games and is the only Skins’ corner who has not allowed a single touchdown or more than 62 yards receiving in a game this season.

Other Cornerbacks- This was the third consecutive week that Fabian Moreau and Joshua Holsey did not play on defense.

If the Redskins fall out of the playoff picture it would be wise of them to give Moreau and Holsey more playing time. They need to find out what they have in these players before they make a decision about re-signing Bashaud Breeland.

D.J. Swearinger- Swearinger was one of the few bright spots for the Redskins’ defense on Sunday. He played on 100% of the snaps and recorded five tackles in the game (3 solo and 2 assists). One of those tackles was a TFL , he also stopped a Minnesota rush for no gain on another play.

He made his biggest impact of the game when he intercepted passes on consecutive drives in the second half, the second of which he nearly returned for a pick six (a 31-yard return to the Minnesota 2). Swearinger basically single-highhandedly put a struggling defense on his back and nearly willed the team to a comeback with those plays.

This was the first multi-interception game of his career and the first time that he has recorded a pick as a member of the Redskins.

Swearinger earned the highest PFF grade on the team (92.0) and the second best grade in the game for his performance against the Vikings.

DeAngelo Hall- DeAngelo Hall made his second straight start since coming off the PUP list. He made 2 solo tackles and assisted on another before he was forced to leave the game with a bone bruise. Hall, who was on the field for all 83 defensive snaps last week, was limited to just 21 snaps on Sunday.

At 34 years old, he is the third oldest safety to have started in a game this season. Hall simply can’t seem to stay healthy, and he is scheduled to hit free agency in March. His days as a Redskin are likely numbered.

Deshazor Everett- Everett replaced Hall at safety and played 38 snaps, by far his highest total since Week 1. In fact, that was only one less snap than he saw in his last four outings combined (39 snaps). He recorded 3 tackles on Sunday (2 solo and 1 assist).

Montae Nicholson- After starting in four consecutive contests between Weeks 4 and 7, the rookie safety missed his second straight game with a shoulder injury.

Chris Carter led the team in snaps for the ninth straight game. Quinton Dunbar got more work on this unit because he did not see any snaps on defense this week. He played the second most specials snaps on the team this week.

Kick Coverage- Nick Sundberg made a tackle on a 9-yard Vikings’ punt return that was taken out to the Minnesota 18-yard line. The Skins’ long snapper has now recorded an ST tackle in two of the last three games. This was Sundberg’s 100th career game.

Kendall Fuller made the solo stop on a Marcus Sherels return of 32 yards which ended at the Minnesota 29-yard line.

Chris Carter recorded his solo teams tackle on Sherels’ return of 25 yards that was taken out to the Vikings’ 28. Carter leads the Redskins with 7 special teams tackles this season.

Nick Rose- Rose went a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals by connecting on kicks from 21, 28 and 55 yards out. He also made all three of his extra point kicks.

His 55-yarder was the longest kick made a Redskins player since Graham Gano hit on a franchise-record 59-yard kick in 2011. Dustin Hopkins career long is 54 yards and he only made 4 field goals of more than 50 yards in his two-and-a-half years as the team’s starting kicker.

Four of Rose’s first six kickoffs went for touchbacks, while the other two kicks were returned for gains of 32 and 25 yards. Those returns were taken out to the Minnesota 28 and 29-yard lines, respectively.

The 57 return yards was the second highest total the Redskins have given up this season, and the 28.5 yards allowed per return is their worst average of the year.

The returns were not ideal, but Rose’s biggest issue of this game was his onside-kick attempt. The ball only traveled 4 of the required 10 yards, and as a result the Redskins were flagged and their hopes of completing a second consecutive comeback were officially dashed.

Tress Way- Tress Way only punted one time on Sunday. He was averaging 4.6 punts per game coming into the day and hadn’t punted fewer than 3 times in a contest this season. I guess when you go for it on five fourth-down plays and score six times this is what happens.

Way booted his only punt for 52 yards, it was returned 9 yards to the Minnesota 18. That gave him his best punt average and inside-of-the 20 percentage of the year, but those are hardly accomplishments since we are working with a sample size of just 1 punt.

Punt Returns- The Vikings were too busy scoring touchdowns, so they only punted the ball twice in the game. This was the first time all season the Redskins have not forced their opponent to punt on at least three possessions.

Jamison Crowder fair caught the punts at the Redskins 38 and 22-yard lines. That was the second time this year the team did not return a single punt in a game.

Kickoff Returns- This was, perhaps, the only area that either the defense or special teams excelled at against the Vikings. The Redskins returned four kickoffs for a season-best 104 KO return yards. Their previous season high was 77 yards.

All four of their returns gained at least 23 yards and three of them made it out to the 28-yard line or farther. This was the first time all season the team returned a kick out past their own 25.

Maurice Harris and Samaje Perine gained 24 and 28 yards on their respective returns. Chris Thompson totaled 52 yards on kickoffs, including a Redskins’ 2017 long of 29 yards.

It was nice to finally see a good performance by the kickoff team, but these plays aren’t going to win you many games unless you are taking kicks to the house for six points.

A look at the stats and snap counts for every offensive player on the Redskins in the team's Week 10 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings

Snaps- Jay Gruden used 18 of his 25 offensive players and Ryan Anderson over the course of a season-high 75 offensive snaps. The 7 that did not see action on offense included 5 inactives (Brian Quick, Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, Tony Bergstrom and Arie Kouandijo), 1 player who worked exclusively as a special teamer (T.J. Clemmings) and a player who did not take a snap of any kind (Colt McCoy).

Points- The offense scored a season-high 30 points in the loss to Minnesota. That is the most points the Redskins have scored and the most points the Vikings have allowed since Week 16 of last season.

Of the team’s 17 first-half points, 7 of them were scored on the opening drive of the game. This was the seventh time this season and in their last eight games that the Redskins have scored on their first possession of the game.

Opening Drive Points- The 7-2 Rams are the only other team that has scored on their opening drive seven times this season. The Redskins and Rams are two of only eight teams since 1999 that have scored on 77.8% or more of their opening possessions. Washington and four of those other eight teams did not commit a turnover on these drives.

3rd Down- The team’s offensive futility on third down continued against the Vikings. The Skins’ were only able to move the sticks on 5 of their 14 third downs (35.7%).

What’s worse is they only faced an average of 5.9 yards to go on these plays and they only converted on distances of 5 or fewer yards (1, 1, 2, 4, 5). Two of the third downs they failed to pick up only needed 1 and 3 yards. They needed to gain 8 or more yards on their seven other third downs. Better execution on first and second down prevent them from facing such tough odds on the money down.

4th Down- Washington went 3 for 5 on 4th down in the game. This was the first time since 1991, the team converted on and went for it that many times on fourth down.

Red Zone- The offense only found the end zone on two of their four trips inside of the Vikings’ 20-yard line. The 50% success rate in the red zone was the team’s lowest mark in this statistic since Week 4 against the Chiefs.

Yardage- The 394 yards of total offense gained by the Redskins was their third highest total of the year and the most yards allowed by the Vikings since Week 15 of 2016. The next highest total Minnesota allowed in that span was 348 yards, 46 fewer than they gave up on Sunday.

Going into Sunday, Washington was 12-3-1 in their last 16 games with 394 or more yards of offense.

Rushing- The Redskins gained just 81 rushing yards on their 27 attempts. This was the first time they’ve topped 23 carries since Week 6 (49ers), but the third consecutive game that they failed to average more than 3.5 YPC (3.3).

Yet, they moved the chains seven times with rushes, their second highest rushing first down total of the year, because they were only faced with a yard to go on eight plays.

The Redskins rank 23rd in rushing yards per game (96.7), 25th in rushing yards per carry (3.75) and 29th in rushing first down percentage (18.9%).

Kirk Cousins (Passing)- On a season-most 45 pass attempts, Kirk Cousins completed 26 of his passes for 327 yards, 16 first downs, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

The interception was particularly costly for the Redskins. Cousins’ egregiously high throw on the play gave the Vikings the easy pick and set them up to score their second touchdown in just over a minute-and-a-half and take an 11-point lead going into the second half.

Cousins posted a passer rating of 78.7 and a completion percentage of 57.8%, which are his worst numbers in either statistic this season outside of Week 1 (Eagles). The 57.8% completion rate actually represented the tenth worst showing of his entire career in that metric. This was the fourth time this year and the second time in the last three weeks his yards per attempt average has been below 7.5.

He also misplaced at least two throws to open receivers that should’ve gone for touchdowns (Doctson, Thompson).

Kirk Cousins (Rushing)- Kirk Cousins only gained 5 yards between his 3 rushes and his kneel down to end the first, but he scored touchdowns on two of those plays. Both scores came from within two yards of the end zone. This was the second time that Captain Kirk has recorded 2 touchdowns on the ground in his last 11 games.

Cousins’ 3 rushing TDs on the year ties him for fourth in the league among QBs in this regard. His 12 rushing scores since 2015 are tied for second in the NFL in that span (Tyrod Taylor also has 12); only Cam Newton has put up more rushing touchdowns from the quarterback position in this time frame (19). Only Jordan Reed has scored more non-passing TDs (19) than Cousins since 2015.

The two scores by KC moved into sole possession of the second most rushing TDs by a Redskins QB. He now only trails Joe Theismann in this department (17 touchdowns).

Kirk Cousins (Advanced Stats)- Of Cousins 327 passing yards, 47% of them came via receiver YAC, with the other 53% going through the air.

His 77.5 QBR score ranked 7th among 28 qualifying signal callers in Week 10.

Kirk Cousins (Records)- This was Cousins’ 22nd career 300-yard passing game. He already held the all-time franchise record in this department, but Sunday’s performance moved him into a tie for the 12th most such games by a QB under the age of 30 in league history. Three more 300-yard performances this season will move him into a tie for 7th on this list.

He made his 41st straight start for the Redskins, which ties Mark Rypien for the second most consecutive starts by a Washington QB in team history. If, and this is a big if, he starts every game for the team both this year and next, he will break Joe Theismann’s team record of 60 straight starts by a quarterback.

Josh Doctson- For the third time in the last four weeks, Josh Doctson set career highs in snaps (69) and snap percentage (92%). He also set new career marks in targets (7) and receptions (4).

It’s really encouraging to see Doctson’s playing time and receiving totals continue to rise; but at the same time, it’s frustrating to watch him and Cousins fail to execute and miss opportunities the way they did on a couple plays against the Vikings.

On one such play, Doctson slipped in the end zone on what would have been an easy 3-yard touchdown and the Redskins had to settle for a field goal on the drive. Then, on the next offensive drive, Cousins missed an open Doctson on what would’ve been a 35-yard score. The offense would turn the ball over on downs two plays later.

By my count, Cousins and Doctson should have hooked up for about 7 touchdowns so far this year instead of 3.

Jamison Crowder- Crowder’s 11 targets and 76 receiving yards were both tied for the most on the team and his receptions of 36 and 32 yards were the Redskins’ second and third longest plays on Sunday. That makes it two straight contests with a catch of 30 or more yards for the third-year receiver.

The problem was he only caught 4 of his 11 targets (36% catch rate) and all but 8 of his yards came on the two aforementioned receptions of 30-plus yards. The only other game in his career that he had a lower catch percentage in was three weeks ago against the Eagles when he caught 2 of 6 targets (33%). Crowder was only officially credited with 2 drops against the Vikings, but there were also two or three other catchable balls he couldn’t haul in.

The worst part about this was two of these plays took place on back-to-back snaps inside Minnesota’s 3-yard line. A Crowder touchdown on one of those throws would’ve made it an 11-point game midway through the third quarter. The Redskins, instead, settled for a field goal that cut the deficit to 15.

He took his only rush of the day for a 5-yard gain on a first-down play.

Jamison Crowder’s touch numbers have been way up in his last two games, and in turn so have his yardage totals. He’s put up a combined 216 yards from scrimmage in his last two outings, after gaining just 163 yards in the team’s first five games.

Maurice Harris- Maurice Harris was signed from the practice to the active roster on Saturday (his 25th birthday) and proceeded to go out on Sunday and have the best game of his career.

Here are all of the personal records Harris set in the game followed by the total for this game and his previous career high in parenthesis: snaps (41, 21), snap percentage (55%, 31%), targets (3, 2), receptions (3, 2), receiving yards (50, 28), first downs (2, 1), touchdowns (1, 0), yards per reception (25, 15) and yards per target (16.7, 14).

On Harris’ very first target of the season, he dived to make a spectacular, one-handed 36-yard touchdown grab. Not only was that his first target and reception of the year, it was both the first touchdown and the longest play of his entire career.

It’s absurd that it took the Redskins this long to figure out Harris should be on the active roster, and they lose points here because Brian Quick’s absence essentially forced them do so.

They should consider themselves lucky he wasn’t picked up by another team the way that Mack Brown was. Look for Harris to continue to get his fair share of snaps going forward. His ascendance may effectively be the proverbial final nail in the coffin for our next player.

Terrelle Pryor- Terrelle Pryor’s utter disappointment of a season continued on Sunday. His 28 snaps and 37.3% snap share represented his second lowest playing time of the year.

In terms of production, this was a new low for Pryor. He did not receive a single target for the first time this season. This was the second time this season and in the last three games that he was held without a catch.

Since his “breakout game” in Week 3 against the Chiefs, Pryor has only caught 7 balls for 54 yards on 13 targets (54% catch percentage, 7.7 yards per reception, 4.2 yards per target).

I don’t think just saying Pryor has been one of the biggest disappointments on this team does his season justice; he has been one of the biggest disappointments in the entire NFL in 2017.

Ryan Grant- Grant caught all 3 of his targets for 25 yards and a first down, despite only playing on a season-low 9 snaps. Grant was forced from the game with a concussion that he sustained on his third and final catch of the day.

Last week he broke his record of 23 receptions in a season; on Sunday, Grant set a new single-season career high in receiving yards (279 yards). This has easily been Grant’s best season in the pros.

Brian Quick- After setting new personal season highs in virtually every receiving statistic last week, Quick missed this week’s game with lingering concussion symptoms.

Vernon Davis- The Redskins’ #1 tight end started in his 23rd straight game for the Redskins on Sunday. Jordan Reed, who did not play this week, has never started in more than five straight games (5 consecutive starts between 2015 and 2016). Davis set new season-highs in snaps (64) and snap percentage (85.3%).

He led the team or was tied for the team lead in targets (11), receptions (7), first downs (5), receiving yards (76) and yards from scrimmage (76). This was the second week in a row that Davis led the team in virtually every major measure of receiving and overall offensive production.

The target and reception totals were both season highs for him. This was Davis’ first 11-target game since Week 6 of the 2013 season and his first 7-catch game since Week 14 of 2015. He has only been targeted more three times in his 173-game career and has only caught more passes on five occasions.

VD had another solid outing, but I need to keep things objective here and tell you where he messed up, too. He dropped a pass, committed a holding penalty and 45% of his targets, 43% of his receptions, 40% of his first downs and 62% of his yards all came on the Redskins’ final offensive drive.

Jeremy Sprinkle- The rookie tight end out of Arkansas started for the third time this season and for the first time since Week 4. He played on 23 snaps after setting a career-high with 24 snaps last week. He was not targeted in the game.

Other Tight Ends- Jordan Reed and Niles Paul both missed their second straight game. Since Reed entered the league in 2013, he and Paul have combined to miss 48 man-games out of 146 combined possible man-games between them (33%).

Chris Thompson (Playing Time)- CT led all Skins’ runners with 45 snaps and played on 60% or more of the snaps for the third time this year. Thompson has been in on the majority of the offensive snaps in 11 of the team’s last 19 games. Just in case you hadn’t already figured it out, I will tell you that he is the Redskins’ RB1.

Chris Thompson (Rushing)- Thompson took his 9 runs for 26 yards and a team-best 3 first downs on the ground.

His 9 rushes in the game represent his second highest total of the season; however, his 2.89 YPC was his third lowest average of the year.

Thompson gained 6 or more yards on a third of his rushes, but also lost yardage on two of them. He was stuffed for no gain and a loss of 4 yards on crucial 3rd-and-1 and 4th-and-1 plays late in the fourth quarter.

Chris Thompson (Receiving)- CT caught 3 of his 7 targets for 41 yards and 2 first downs. His biggest play of the game was a 27-yard catch down the sideline on a 4th-and-2 play in the first quarter.

His 81.6 PFF grade ranked 3rd on the offense.

Thompson still leads the team in receptions, receiving yards, rushing yards, first downs, yards from scrimmage and touchdowns.

Robert Kelley- In typical Fat Rob fashion, Kelley started but only played on 10 snaps before suffering yet another injury. This was the fourth time in his seven games this season that he has had a snap share of less than 25%.

His line of 10 yards for 0 first downs and a 2.5-yard average are also pretty typical numbers for Kelley. He lost yardage on one run and gained 7 yards on another, but his two other rushes only went for 2 and 3 yards. He did, however, add two receptions for 5 yards and a first down.

Kelley suffered a high ankle sprain and an MCL sprain in the game. He will be out for an extended period and per Jay Gruden the team may even put him on injured reserve.

Samaje Perine- Samaje Perine took his 9 rushes for 35 yards and 2 first downs.
Perine caught his only target for a gain of 25 yards, the longest play of his career. The 25 receiving yards was also a career high for him.

After allowing 14 sacks between Weeks 7 and 9, the line only gave up 1 sack on Cousins’ 40 dropbacks, and that sack came on the team’s final offensive play of the day.

Cousins only took 5 hits in the game; opposing defenders combined for 10 hits per game over the course of the last 3 contests.

Key letdowns in critical moments on both sides of the ball killed any chances of a victory against Minnesota

Both the Redskins’ offense and the defense failed each other when it mattered most against the Vikings

Key letdowns in critical moments on both sides of the ball killed any chances to get the win.

In a performance and overall outcome that was nothing short of shocking by both teams, the Redskins were the team who ended the day with the most mistakes. You can try all you want to pinpoint where the fault lies in the loss against the Vikings, but just like in last week’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the Redskins lost this game as a team this week. There will be weeks in which defense will be on the ropes for most of the day; it is on the offense to pick up the slack. It is also weeks in which the offense needs help, and the defense needs to make plays to help out the offense. Both situations took place; the offense did not struggle to move the ball against the Vikings. However, a few mistakes put their drives to an abrupt end due to error and lack of execution. On the defensive side of the football, the Redskins could not get their bearings for the first three quarters.

The first six possessions, the Redskins surrendered five touchdowns. This Minnesota Vikings offense is one who was middle of the pack through the air, yet had their way with a multitude of big gains against a secondary who had been impressive and seemingly healthy again. The issue with how the secondary played is simple: Josh Norman and Bashaud Breeland are allowed to have a bad game or two, it is the nature of the cornerback position, but the timing in which their bad game happened is the key. In a moment of the season where the Redskins have a slight margin of error, there is no room for the two best cornerbacks to have hiccups in their performances. The Redskins could live with a performance like this earlier in the season but the timing of a bad game in which Case Keenum, Adam Thielen, and Stefon Diggs have elite days against the secondary as a whole is what makes the loss such a tough pill to swallow.

As a whole, the defense did not have response to the Vikings offensively. There was hardly any interior pressure on Keenum, and the front seven could not defend the Vikings in the ground game either. That is not to say though, that they did not give the Redskins offense zero chance to at the very least tie the game up. D.J. Swearinger had two huge interceptions that gave the Redskins life. As the defense failed to help the offense in the first three quarters, the offense returned the favor late, failing to capitalize on one of Swearinger’s interceptions and turned the ball over on downs twice in striking distance.

Plays were there to be had on both sides of the ball for Washington, and the Redskins as head coach Jay Gruden would say “missed a lot of opportunities.” It is a very remarkable way for a team to respond following a significant road win that keeps them right in the thick of the playoffs, and it is also very concerning defensively to see that type of performance heading into the stretch run of the season. The Redskins must recover and get ready for a must-win game on the road, again, versus the division-leading New Orleans Saints.

Kelley exited the game after suffering what appeared to be a serious injury. He fumbled the ball on the play, but after review the call was reversed.

Kelley did not return to the game, and it was also announced he re-injured his ankle. Ian Rapoport is reporting he has a high-ankle sprain, and a grade 1 / 2 MCL sprain.
Vernon Davis - Davis has made Redskins fans forget about the oft injured Jordan Reed, turning in yet another solid performance Sunday. He caught seven passes for 76 yards on the afternoon, leading all pass catchers.

D.J. Swearinger - On a day where the defense as a whole was absolutely atrocious, Swearinger lands on the Studs list after this game for his seven tackles (one for loss), two interceptions performance.

Nick Rose - Rose hit all three of his field goal attempts, one being from 55 yards (which would have been good from over 60), and was perfect again on extra points. I think the Redskins may have finally found their kicker.

Duds:

Jamison Crowder - So much for a break-out season for Crowder. He needs to spend some time on the Jugs machine... oh wait, that didn’t work to well for Pryor. This kid can’t catch a cold this season! I counted at least three drops in the Vikings game. Guess what Jamison, you’re going to get hit anyways; it hurts a lot less when you come down with the ball!

Terrelle Pryor - A 0.0. No stats recorded. I think we should make him inactive for the rest of the season, and bring up Davis from the practice squad.

The Entire Defensive line - Playing without Jonathan Allen and Matt Ioannidis hurts more than imaginable. Ziggy Hood should be cut immediately - he’s NOT a nose tackle! Brandon Banks, Anthony Lanier and Terrell McClain all looked like they were playing on roller skates, and quite frankly, the team would have been better off if they made all three purchase tickets to get into the game, and simply went into the stands and pulled out three big guys or gals to take their place. The only one who showed up, and quite frankly shouldn’t be on this list, is Stacy McGee - who actually played respectably.

Ryan Kerrigan - The Pro Bowler made ZERO impact on this game. He looked out of place in the run game, and generated very little pass rush. The Redskins expect and needed more.

Josh Norman - He’s getting 20 million for a performance like this? Norman should be forced to donate this, and his next five game checks, to a charity who declaws cats from a mobile trailer on the weekends.

Bashaud Breeland - Wow, talk about an up and down season! Breeland is having just that, and for him heading into free agency in 2018, the timing is not great. Breeland was just plain awful against the Vikings receivers Sunday. He may want to revisit that rap career again...

DeAngelo Hall - Just how badly are we missing rookie safety Montae Nicholson? Just watch Hall, who looks like he running in mud out there, and you’ll have your answer. He offers no over-the-top help, and couldn’t cover a high school freshman receiver right now. Stick a fork in him - he’s done!

Greg Manusky - I get it, Manusky is playing without four defensive starters, and a few guys who are playing aren’t 100 percent. But, he had an absolute awful game plan against Minn, and made case Keenum look like Aaron Rodgers. I know Manusky can’t strap on the pads and go play for his guys (although I’m sure he would), but the second half adjustments were non-existent, and the pressure on Keenum was absent the entire game.

Bruce Allen - This one has been a long time coming! First, you failed to sign Cousins to a extension this offseason. You focus too much on your damn hair instead of being a football guy. You plan better for Harvest Fest than you do the offseason. You fired the first real general manager we have had here in years. ....Oh wait; sorry. I got sidetracked there for a minute.

But Bruce, our pseudo GM, had to sign off of some of these suspect moves the team has made. Signing Pryor - F. Letting Jackson go - D-. Retaining Hood - F. Not bringing Harris off the practice squad until this week - F. Bringing Brandon Banks off the practice squad this week - F. Activating, instead of releasing, DeAngelo Hall - F. Our damn horrible field - F-! I could go on...and on...and on.

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere...

The 5 o’clock club aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.

The defense gave up 5 touchdowns in the Vikings’ first 6 possessions. That isn’t the defense that I had seen from the Redskins in the first 8 games.

I’ve had a theory for a long time now, that seemed to be evident in Sunday afternoon’s game.

Jay Gruden is an inherently conservative guy, and he’s got a 10-point mental block.

When the Redskins get a lead of 10-points or more, Jay gets conservative and tries to nurse, or protect, the lead rather than trying to put his foot on the gas and bury the opponents. Conversely, when the ‘Skins get down by 10 or more, Jay panics a bit, and starts to gamble and change his play calling. I think it’s Jay’s greatest flaw as a coach.

On Sunday, he started making panicked decisions when the Vikings opened up a 15-point lead.

There’s no single play that I can point to in this game and say that it cost the Redskins the game, though Kirk’s interception certainly was a huge momentum swing, and the ‘turf monster’ that got Doctson when he was wide open in the end zone hurt.

Crowder played in tough situations all day, but, boy, I’d’ve liked to have seen him hold onto more passes.

It looked to me like the better team won on Sunday. I don’t know if the Redskins (especially on defense) aren’t as good as I thought they were; if the Vikings offense (and especially Case Keenum) is better than I thought it was, or a bit of both.

Two teams this season have changed my opinion of them — the Eagles and the Vikings.
