The Redskins’ 1st round pick is done for the year.

Initial reports had Redskins DE Jonathan Allen missing 3-4 weeks with a Lisfranc injury suffered against the 49ers on Sunday. ESPN's John Keim now reports that the rookie pass-rusher will miss the rest of the season.

An MRI was done after a consultation with Dr. Robert Anderson to determine the severity of the injury on Monday. Redskins’ Head Coach Jay Gruden initially said he could miss 3-4 weeks, which seemed optimistic. Though now it is clear that Allen will miss the remainder of his ro. The injury requires that he has a screw inserted into his injured foot, and will require at least three months of recovery.

This is a big blow to a Redskins defense that had seen improvement from last year. After the Virginia native unexpectedly fell to the Redskins at #17 in the 2017 Draft, and earned a spot in the starting lineup, Allen started all five games. He finishes the year with ten tackles, one sack, and 29 QB hits/pressures.

Allen leads the NFL’s DTs with at least 30 pass-rush snaps with a 13.1 pass-rush productivity mark.

Charging up the rookie rankings is Allen, after a third strong performance in as many games, against San Francisco in Week 6. Against the 49ers, Allen registered another four QB pressures giving him 13 total for the season, most among rookie interior defenders. Most impressively, he’s reached 13 pressures on just 80 snaps, less than No. 2 and No. 3 on the list of most pressures out of a rookie DT (Adam Butler, 9 pressures, 93 pass-rush snaps; Jeremiah Ledbetter, 6 pressures, 89 pass-rush snaps). In all, his pass-rush productivity mark of 13.1 is first among all the league’s DTs with at least 30 pass-rush snaps.

It is expected that Anthony Lanier, a previously undrafted free agent in his second NFL season will be tasked with filling in for Allen along the D-line. Lanier has not yet suited up for Washington this season, and played in four contests in 2016.

Jay Gruden has had high praise for the 24-year old saying, “He was a guy that was one of the most difficult for our guys to block. He was not a very natural rusher, either. He was doing it on pure power, length. And I think the more he works coming out of his stance, getting off on the snap count, hand usage, all the things Coach [Jim] Tomsula worked with him, I think he’s got a chance to be really, really good.”

Now with Allen done for the year, Washington is going to be without one of their brightest young stars as they get set to take on the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field next Monday Night.

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere...

The 5 o’clock club aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.

I felt that there were three players that could potentially have been named the difference maker for the win against the 49ers.

If the Redskins had lost the game

To me, the pivotal point in the game where momentum swung away from the Redskins and to the Niners came late in the second quarter with the Redskins leading 17-0.

Here’s the play-by-play description from NFL.com:

3-10-WAS 13

(:48) (Shotgun) 3-C.Beathard pass short middle to 15-P.Garcon to WAS 5 for 8 yards (53-Z.Brown).

PENALTY on WAS-36-D.Swearinger, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 3 yards, enforced at WAS 5.

The Redskins defense got a stop on 3rd & 10 in the Red Zone. Long after the play was over, DJ Swearinger shoved Pierre Garcon in the facemask after the two were trading some verbal sparring.

Instead of kicking a field goal to go to the half 17-3, the 49ers had the ball 1st & goal, and punched it in for a touchdown. The game was now 17-7, and the Niners got the ball back on the kickoff to start the second half.

In a press conference a few days before the game, a reporter asked Gruden about playing against Garcon, and his ability to needle opposing defenses. Gruden mentioned that many of the guys in the defensive backfield had practiced and played with Garcon for years, and they knew about his mouth and attitude. They would, he said, tell the other defensive guys and get them ready.

I guess Swearinger slept through that team meeting, because he lost his composure and made a rookie mistake -- the kind that shouldn’t happen to the captain of the defense. His mistake put an extra 4 points on the board, and more importantly, gave hope and life to a struggling San Fransisco team that had been dominated through most of the game.

Swearinger made a number of good plays, but in a game that should have been a Redskin victory by a wide margin, DJ Swearinger provided the spark that San Fransisco needed to come back against the Redskins. More than the missed Hopkins extra point, more than any missed tackles or dropped passes; this penalty would have been the thing I would have pointed to if the Redskins had lost.

The difference maker on offense

One offensive player stood out in this game.

3rd quarter: catch & run for 13 yards

Chris Thompson absolutely ran over the 49er defense in the first half, and for the game he finished up with 105 yards receiving and 138 yards from scrimmage.

But CT was bottled up as a runner after halftime, and he never found the end zone, though his 4 receptions were all big plays that moved the chains.

Thompson was probably the best offensive player in the game for the Redskins, but he’s not my choice for this week’s difference maker.

This week’s difference maker versus the San Fransisco 49ers

Matt Ioannidis played another great game for the Redskins this week. Let’s see what James Dorsett had to say about his game in his Skins Stats & Snaps article:

Matty I wreaked havoc on yet another opposing backfield on Sunday. He recorded a career-high 1.5 sacks and has now sacked an opposing QB in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. He has at least a half sack in four of the team’s five contests this season.

His solo sack turned a potential Robbie Gould 40-yard field goal into a 47-yarder. Gould then failed to convert on the kick, his first miss of the year. Both of Ioanndis’ sacks came on third down.

He also set new career highs in total pressures (6) and hits (4); he led the team in both categories against the 49ers.

Ioanndis’ 10 quarterback hits on the season ranks tied for 9th in the league. Aaron Donald is the only interior defensive lineman with a better pass rushing productivity score in the entire NFL.

This week’s difference maker, who passes the eye test, playing like a beast, and who has the statistics to back it up (not always easy for a defensive lineman), Matt Ioannidis is the guy who broke down the SF offensive line again and again.

A look at the stats and snap counts for every offensive player on the Redskins in the team's Week 6 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers

Snaps- Jay Gruden used 18 of his 24 offensive players over the course of a season-high 74 snaps. That is the most snaps that the offense has been on the field for in a regulation-length game since Week 4 of 2015.

The 6 offensive players that did not get any action included 3 inactives (Rob Kelley, Jeremy Sprinkle and Ty Nsekhe), 2 that did not take a snap of any kind in the game (Colt McCoy and Tyler Catalina) and 1 player that worked exclusively on special teams (Chase Roullier).

2nd Half Slumping- Kirk Cousins and company have scored on the opening drive of three consecutive contests. You have to go back to 2004 to find the last time that a Redskins team did that. They are starting out very strong, but they are having a problem finishing their opponents off.

They have opened each of their last four games with a double-digit lead, but the scoring margin was 7 or less in the final minute of the game in three of those contests.

Their scoring margin of plus 20 in the first quarter of games ranks 4th in the NFL, but they have allowed their opponents to score 73 points in the second half of games, which ranks 9th worst in the league.

Penalties- Washington players committed a combined 5 penalties for 43 yards on Sunday. The team currently ranks 2nd in accepted penalties (25) and 1st in penalty yards (204). They only fall to 3rd and 2nd in those categories if you adjust this to a per game basis.

3rd Down- The offense went 7 for 14 on third down. The 50% conversion rate was the team’s best mark of the year. That is even more impressive considering that they averaged 6.3 yards to go from the line-to-gain on those plays.

The Redskins have moved the chains on 48% of their third downs that have required 7 or more yards this season, which ranks 1st in the NFL. The next closest team is the Eagles, who have converted on 37.5% of their third-and-longs.

Red Zone- The Redskins scored touchdowns on 3 of their 4 trips to the red zone. The 75% conversion rate was the team’s best success rate in this category (minimum 2 RZ trips) since their Sunday night beatdown of the Packers last season (4 for 5 and 80%).

Rushing- The Skins ran it on 45% or more of their plays for the fourth consecutive week. Unfortunately, they failed to go for over 100 yards for the first time since Week 1. None of the running backs or fullbacks (yes, I’m counting Niles Paul here) that got a carry averaged over 2.6 yards per rush.

Your Weekly Reminder That The Redskins Are A Good Team- The Steelers and Redskins are the only two teams that rank in the top 10 in both offensive and defensive DVOA.

QUARTERBACKS

Kirk Cousins (Passing)- Captain Kirk completed 25 of his 37 passes for 330 yards, 18 first downs and 2 touchdowns. Cousins also threw an interception, which snapped his streak of 107 attempts without a pick. He was only sacked once and made a touchdown-saving tackle on a 49ers’ fumble return. Cousins was credited with his second game-winning drive of the season (10th career).

He also posted impressive marks in the following categories: completion percentage (67.6%), yards per attempt (8.92) and passer rating (102.3). This marked the third game in a row in which he threw multiple TD passes, had a rating over 100.0 and averaged over 8.5 yards per attempt. This was also the third time this year that he has completed over two thirds of his passes.

Since Cousins’ poor outing in Week 1 against the Eagles, he ranks first in the NFL in yards per attempt (9.27), adjusted yards per attempt (10.25) and passer rating (117.7).

Kirk Cousins (Rushing)- KC got it done on the ground for the second straight week. He rushed the ball 4 times (including a kneel down for a loss of 1) for 26 yards, 2 first downs and his first rushing TD of the season.

His 10 career rushing scores have all come between 2015 and 2017. He leads the team and ranks second among all quarterbacks in rushing TDs in that time frame (Cam Newton has 18 TDs since 2015). He also tied Sonny Jurgensen for the second most rushing TDs by a Redskins QB in franchise history. Only Joe Theismann scored more touchdowns on the ground as a signal caller for Burgundy and Gold (17).

Kirk Cousins (Advanced Stats)- Cousins posted QBR scores of 34.2 and 35.2 in Weeks 1 and 2, which ranked 19th and 23rd in those respective weeks. As you might’ve have figured he has been on fire since then. His QBR has been over 81 in each of his last three games, which has put him at 6th or higher in each of those weeks. Cousins trails only Dak Prescott in QBR since Week 3. His 67.5 overall QBR ranks 5th this season. He ranked 6th in both 2015 and 2016.

Per numberFire, he also led all quarterbacks in both passing net expected points added and total EPA.

Terrelle Pryor- Pryor disappointed again with a line of 5 targets, 3 receptions, 2 first downs and 23 yards.

He hasn’t led the team in receiving yards since Week 1 (66 yards) and he also hasn’t eclipsed 70 yards receiving in a game this season. That’s pretty sad considering that 88 players have combined for 147 games of 71 or more receiving yards in this season alone. Pryor’s PFF grade still ranks 102nd out of 109 qualifying receivers.

He has led all Redskins receivers in snaps in each game this season and has received an average of 8.4 more snaps per game than the receiver with the second most playing time in each game. That needs to stop unless we see a dramatic turnaround for Pryor.

Jamison Crowder- Somebody needs to put the 2015-2016 version of Jamison Crowder on a milk carton, because that player is still missing in action this season.

Crowder gained 11 yards and picked up a first down on a sweep rushing play, but he seemed to disappear after that. I mean, he was targeted 5 times, but the Crowder we all know and love wouldn’t turn those 5 targets into 3 receptions for just 15 yards and 1 first down, would he? Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened on Sunday.

Crowder is averaging a career-low 24 yards per game (previous low was 37 YPG as a rookie), and he has yet to score a touchdown after posting 9 TDs over the course of the last two seasons. Crowder led the entire team in touchdowns last year (7).

He also ranked 3rd on the squad in yards from scrimmage in 2016; he currently ranks 7th on the team in that category. Oh, and on top of all that, he is averaging a career-low 5.0 yards per punt return.

Crowder was not on the injury report this week, so I’m really at a loss here. Where are you, Jamison?!?

Ryan Grant- I don’t believe I’m saying this, but Grant is proving to be Mr. Clutch for the 2017 Redskins. He caught 3 of his 5 targets for 3 first downs and 39 yards. All 3 first-down catches came on either 2nd or 3rd down with 9 or more yards away from a first down. He also drew a holding penalty in the end zone on a 2nd-and-11 red-zone play. Kirk Cousins ran it in for a touchdown on the next play.

Grant ranks second among Washington wideouts in both receiving yards (158) and first downs (11). Terrelle Pryor has 51 more yards and 1 more first down than Grant does, but he has been targeted 9 more times and has played on 103 more snaps. Grant is tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns (2) with Chris Thompson and Josh Doctson.

Josh Doctson- Doctson only caught 1 of the 3 passes thrown in his direction on Sunday, but that catch went for an 11-yard red-zone touchdown on the first drive of the game. That was the second score of Doctson’s career and his second TD in his last three games.

Yet, somehow he only saw the field on a season-low 26% of the offensive snaps. It’s hard to understand why his playing time rose in each of his first five career games and then dropped in each game after he scored a 52-yard touchdown against the Raiders.

Jay Gruden didn’t know why this had happened either and promised to “actively expand his role on offense” going forward. Vernon Davis is probably the only wideout or tight end that Doctson should not be stealing snaps from at this point.

Brian Quick- This was the third time this year that Quick has been active. He played on 4 snaps and was not targeted. He has only taken 11 offensive snaps this season and caught his only target of 2017 for an 11-yard first down in Week 1.

Jordan Reed- Reed played on just under 75% of the offensive snaps and led all Skins’ tight ends in snaps played for the first time since Week 1. He also ran a route on 30 of Cousins’ 38 dropbacks.

He was tied for the team lead in targets (5) and receptions (4), but he only gained 37 yards and picked up 1 first down.

The vast majority of his production came on Washington’s touchdown-scoring drive in the second quarter. Three of his targets and receptions, his first down and 33 of his 37 yards came on that 64-yard drive. It’s as if he gave everything he had to put the team on his back and lead them to a score on that series and had nothing left in the tank after that.

Reed is now healthy enough to get onto the field, but the question is how effective can he be when he’s out there. He is averaging career lows in yards per target (5.92) and yards per reception (7.89). Those averages are both over a yard lower than his previous career lows (2014) and 1.9 and 2.4 yards below his career averages, respectively.

He has failed to post a 50-yard receiving effort since his blowup game against the Cowboys last Thanksgiving. Reed’s 198 receiving yards and 25 receptions in his seven games since then represent the lowest output in any seven-game stretch of his career.

Vernon Davis- Vernon Davis, on the other hand, has put up 58 or more receiving yards in each of his last three games and is the only Washington tight end with a touchdown this season. He is averaging 20.5 yards per reception, which would rank 2nd in the entire NFL if he had enough receptions to qualify for that statistic.

On Sunday, Davis caught 3 of his 4 targets for 65 yards and 3 first downs against his former team. His 51-yarder in the 4th quarter put the Redskins in position to score a crucial touchdown late in the game. This marked the first time that Davis caught a pass that went 50 or more yards in consecutive games since Weeks 5 and 6 of 2013.

He was on the wrong end of both Redskins’ turnovers, though. He was Cousins’ target on the team’s only interception and he fumbled a ball that the 49ers would recover and return to the 1-yard line. Hyde scored a touchdown on the next play.

In my opinion, you can’t really hate on VD for those giveaways. The pick was the result of an overthrow by Cousins, and it looked as if Davis may have been down before he lost control of the ball on the fumble.

Niles Paul- Paul received just 16 offensive snaps and a 22% snap share against the 49ers, both of which were easily his lowest totals since Week 1.

Jay Gruden unwisely called Paul’s number on a 2nd-and-2 fullback dive at the goal line. Paul was stuffed for a loss of a yard and team was forced to settle for a field goal two plays later. Two of his three career rushes have lost a yard and the other one went for a 7-yard first down. You should probably pass on this play next time, Jay. Paul is not Darrel Young.

Chris Thompson (Playing Time)- Chris Thompson is doing so many good things for the Redskins that he has earned more sections in this article than Kirk Cousins has.

CT got the first start of his career on Sunday and led all Redskins running backs in snaps for the third time this season, he saw a combined 5 fewer snaps than the RB leading the team in this category in the two other games.

The 45 snaps and 61% snap share he saw against the 49ers were both the second highest totals of his career.

Chris Thompson (Rushing)- Thompson took a career-high 16 rushes for 33 yards and 2 first downs. CT had a great game, but he simply didn’t produce as a runner.

He fumbled on his first carry, his 2.06 YPC average was his 5th lowest mark in a game that he’s received a carry in, he failed to gain any yardage on the same percentage of his rushes that he gained more than 3 yards on and he lost yardage on nearly a third of his runs (-14 yards on 5 of his runs).

Chris Thompson (Receiving)- Chris Thompson isn’t known for his great rushing ability; he is known for being an elite receiving threat out of the backfield. That is exactly what he was on Sunday.

He caught 4 of his 5 passes for 4 first downs and a whopping 105 receiving yards. Three of his 4 catches and 92 of his 105 receiving yards came on screen plays. He had a total of 20 touches in the game, another new career high.

Thompson led the team in both rushing and receiving yards against the 49ers. The last Redskins player to accomplish that feat was Evan Royster (2011).

Chris Thompson (The Goat)- There are so many incredible Chris Thompson stats that I’m not going to even try to sensibly tie them together for you. I’m just going to spit out as many stats as I can before this section of the article takes on a life of its own.

He is tied for the team lead in receptions (18) and leads the Redskins in first downs (14), receiving yards (340) touchdowns (4) and yards from scrimmage (515).

Vernon Davis and Terrelle Pryor rank 2nd and 3rd on the team in yards from scrimmage; Thompson has gained 81 more yards than both of them combined.

He has accounted for over 26% of the Redskin’s yards from scrimmage this season.

Ryan Grant and Josh Doctson are tied for second on the team with 2 touchdowns each. Thompson has scored as many touchdowns as both of them have combined (4).

Dick James is the only other Redskins running back with two 100-yard receiving games in a season (1962). Two 100-yard receiving games is also tied for the most career 100-yard days through the air by a Washington RB (James, Larry Brown and Craig McEwen).

“Chris Army Knife” currently leads all NFL running backs in receiving yards (340), receiving yards per game (68) and yards per reception (18.9).

He leads the NFL with 329 yards after the catch (YAC), which is 77 more yards of YAC than the second place player in that category. His 18.3 YAC average is also tops in the league.

If Thompson continues at this pace, he will become the fourth player in NFL history to gain 1,000 yards receiving in the same season that they had 100 rushing attempts (Marshall Faulk, Roger Craig and Lionel James).

Faulk was the last running back with over 1,000 receiving yards in a season, and he did it in 1999, the year Dan Synder bought the Redskins.

Samaje Perine- Perine played on a third of the snaps and took his 9 rushes for a total of 23 yards. His 2.56 YPC average was a new career low, and only 33% of his rushes were successful.

He gained more than 3 yards on just 1 of his runs (8 yards) and only picked up 1 rushing first down in the game.

The first down was a critical one, though. The Redskins were up by 3 with 7 minutes left in the game, when the offense faced a 3rd-and-1 from their own 25-yard line. At first, it looked like Perine was going to be stuffed on the play, but he lunged forward for a 2-yard gain and the first down on his second effort. That chain mover allowed Vernon Davis to flip the field with a 51-yarder on the next play and Cousins to finish the drive with a rushing TD.

Like his backfield mate, Chris Thompson, Perine did his best work as a receiver. The rookie caught all 3 of his passes for 24 yards (1 more yard than he gained on his 9 rushes), 2 first downs and a touchdown, the first score of his NFL career.

Mack Brown- Mack Brown was active in place of an injured Rob Kelley for the second time this season (Week 3 vs. Oakland). However, in this game, he received 6 fewer snaps and 3 fewer touches than he did in his previous outing.

He did touch the ball on 3 of his 4 snaps. He lost a yard on his first rush and gained 3 yards on a 1st-and-10 on his second attempt. His highlight of the day was a career-long 11-yard reception for a first down. The Redskins scored a field goal on that drive.

Jay Gruden seriously needs to consider giving Brown more chances if Perine continues to squander his opportunities.

Offensive Line (Run Blocking)- Redskins runners combined to average season lows in both YPC (2.8) and YPC before contact (0.8). They also failed to gain any yards on a season-high 10 runs and 30% of their rushes. This was obviously not a banner day for the offensive line in the run-blocking department.

Offensive Line (Pass Blocking)- The line only allowed 1 sack and 6 hits over the course of Cousins’ 38 dropbacks on Sunday. After giving up a total of 6 sacks between Weeks 1 and 2, the Redskins have only allowed a combined 2 sacks in Weeks 3-6.

Washington currently ranks 4th in sacks allowed (8), 8th in sack percentage (4.8%) and 9th in adjusted sack rate (5.1%). They have achieved those rankings while facing off against the likes of Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Aaron Donald, Robert Quinn, Khalil Mack, Justin Houston and DeForest Buckner.

Trent Williams- You could tell that Trent Williams was playing through an injury on Sunday. He gave up a sack to rookie Solomon Thomas in the game, his first sack allowed since Week 7 of the 2016 season. Luckily, the Redskins were still able to score a field goal on the drive.

His biggest impact on the game came on just the second play from scrimmage, when he recovered a Chris Thompson fumble at Washington’s own 36-yard line. The Redskins marched down the field for a touchdown on that drive. The entire game could have been different had the 49ers recovered that fumble and scored first.

Morgan Moses- Moses only gave up 2 pressures in the game and earned an 82.5 PFF grade for his efforts, the second best rating on the offense. He was, however, caught moving before the snap on a 2nd-and-7 play and got flagged for a false start. Kirk Cousins would throw an interception two plays later.

Brandon Scherff- Scherff was nearly perfect and played what was likely the best game of his career on Sunday. He did not allow a single pressure of any kind on 42 pass-blocking snaps, his impact run block percentage of 34% led the NFL in Week 6 and his 96.3 PFF grade for the game was the highest rating given to a guard all year.

The former top-5 pick out of Iowa now ranks 2nd and 3rd among all guards in PFF run-blocking (91.8) and overall grade (85.0). Kendall Fuller is the only Redskin with a higher grade than Scherff. It sure is nice when your team hits big on their early-round draft picks.

The Redskins look for new blood

The Redskins have been dealing with injuries every week, and continue to have new players get dinged up. This week's victory over the 49ers cost them DE Jonathan Allen(Lisfranc), K Dustin Hopkins(hip, reportedly out for the year), and possibly CB Bashaud Breeland(knee). They were already without CB Josh Norman(ribs), S Deshazor Everett(hamstring), and RB Rob Kelley(ankle) last week, and had Trent Williams playing with an injured knee.

Washington has depth at a lot of positions, and has been able to cover themselves with the players they already have on the roster. Jonathan Allen's injury should keep him out for a month, minimum, and Anthony Lanier will be active to enter the rotation. One spot the Redskins dont have depth (obviously) is kicker, and Jay Gruden said the team would be working out a few this week(Hopkins reportedly done for the year).
The Redskins are a Top 10 team this week

The Redskins(3-2) added another loss to the 49ers season, but it wasn’t a dominating win like some expected. The 49ers were in it until the end for a variety of reasons. The Redskins get the W and stay competitive in the NFC East with the division leading Philadelphia Eagles. Monday Night Football will answer a lot of questions about the division. The Redskins need the win to keep pace with the Eagles, and Philadelphia looks to firmly take control of the division early in the year. Disgusting.

The Redskins are in the 6 - 17 range this week, and the majority are in the Top 10, playoff range. The Eagles are at the top of the division with a 5-1 record, and are at the top 3 range of most power rankings this week. The Cowboys(2-3) continue to get bad news with retirements, failed free agents, Zeke getting suspended(for reals this time?), and giving Aaron Rodgers his last win of the year last week. But at least the Giants got a win this week. 1-5 is respectable, keep ruining that draft position New Jersey!

Redskins Week 7 Ranking Average: 10

Is their ranking too high or too low this week?

The Redskins could have put their game against the 49ers away earlier, but it was still a solid win. Chris Thompson continues to impress as a runner and as a receiver out of the backfield. The defense was again solid, though there were a few times it let the 49ers off the hook.

Instead of making life miserable on C.J. Beathard, the Redskins allowed him to keep San Francisco in the game. There were far too many big pass plays from a guy seeing his first NFL action for my liking.

The Redskins' passing game is fantastic, though it would be nice to see Kirk Cousins getting the ball to Terrelle Pryor and Josh Doctson more. When the run game is clicking to complement the pass, the Washington offense can be lethal.

Overall, the Redskins are one of the better teams in the NFC.

It may seem odd for Washington to move up so much after beating the winless 49ers, but San Francisco is a tough opponent that competes hard every week. This is a team that was coming off a bye, that wasn't sharp and was missing its best defender in Josh Norman. It still found a way to win. That's the mark of a playoff contender. Last Week: 10

A look at the stats and snap counts for every defensive and special teams player on the Redskins in the team's Week 6 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers

Snaps- Greg Manusky sent out 19 of his 26 defenders over the course of a season-high 72 defensive snaps. The 7 that did not see time on defense included 4 inactives (Anthony Lanier, Josh Harvey-Clemons, Josh Norman and Deshazor Everett) and 3 players that only took snaps on special teams (Will Compton, Martrell Spaight and Chris Carter).

Ryan Anderson, Joshua Holsey and Stefan McClure combined for 24 defense snaps, while every other player that got action on defense took at least 24 snaps themselves.

Quarterback Pressure- The defense registered 3 sacks and a season-best 10 quarterback hits on Sunday. The Redskins have now recorded at least 3 sacks and 6 hits in each of their last three games.

Turnovers- After forcing multiple turnovers in each of their first three games, the Redskins have only one takeaway in their last two contests. That takeaway didn’t occur until the second to last play in Sunday’s game.

Third Down & Red Zone Defense- The 49ers only converted on 6 of their 17 third downs in the game. The 35% conversion rate allowed by the defense on the money down represents the second best showing in this area, outside of their amazing third-down shutout against the Raiders.

Things did not go as well in the red zone, where San Francisco scored touchdowns on both of their trips inside of the Washington 20-yard line.

Tight End Defense- San Francisco tight ends caught 5 of their 10 targets for 59 yards and just 2 first downs. This might have been the team’s best performance against enemy tight ends all year, but this was also probably the worst tight end corps they have faced this season.

The Redskins have still given up an NFL-worst 407 receiving yards to the position despite the fact that the next seven worst teams in this category have played six games to Washington’s five.

Wide Receiver Defense- Aldrick Robinson’s touchdown was just the second score that the Skins have allowed to an opposing wideout all season. They are tied for first in the NFL in that statistic (Jacksonville) and also sit in the top 5 in wide receiver targets, receptions and yards against.

Rushing Defense- After not allowing a single rushing touchdown in the first three games, Washington’s defense has surrendered 3 rushing scores combined in their last two contests. Two of those TDs came courtesy of 1-yard rushes by Carlos Hyde on Sunday.

The Redskins only gave up 85 yards on the ground and did not give up any yards on a quarter of the 49ers’ rushes (5 of 20), but they allowed San Francisco to average 4.3 yards per carry and post a 65% rushing success rate (13 of 20).

Ziggy Hood- Evander “Ziggy” Hood got his third start of the year and led all Burgundy and Gold D-linemen in snaps for the second straight game. In Week 4 against the Chiefs, he made his way on to the stat sheet for the first time with 2 tackles and a half sack.

It was a different story on Sunday, as he failed to record a single traditional stat for the fourth time this year. I know he is busy occupying blockers as the nose tackle, but tell me how he only manages 2 tackles on 153 snaps this season. This was also the second game in which he recorded 0 QB pressures.

Ziggy Hood’s 41.1 overall PFF grade on the season ranks 123rd out of 123 qualifying interior defensive linemen. Please stop giving him so many snaps, Jim Tomsula.

Matt Ioannidis- Matty I wreaked havoc on yet another opposing backfield on Sunday.

Jonathan Allen- Jon Allen was forced to leave the game with a Lisfranc sprain, and as a result he played on a season-low 40.3% of the defensive snaps (29 snaps tied his season-low). He failed to record a tackle for the first time this season, but he did register two QB hits before exiting.

Allen, who was leading all rookie defensive tackles in pass rush productivity, will be sorely missed. Jay Gruden said he expects Allen to miss 3 to 4 weeks, but everything I’ve read about Lisfranc sprains indicates this is more of a 6 week injury, 6 to 8 weeks to be precise. If true, that would obviously be a major problem for the defense.

On the bright side, Allen’s absence will allow us to finally get a look at Anthony Lanier, who has been inactive in all five games.

Terrell McClain- McClain, like Ziggy Hood, has seen his first and second highest snap totals in Weeks 4 and 6, respectively. He also did not record any stats against the 49ers, just like Hood. He was at least able to generate some pressure on the QB.

Stacy McGee- McGee had one of his most productive showings of the year on Sunday. He made a season-high 2 solo and 4 total tackles and was able to get some pressure as pass rusher.

Ryan Kerrigan- This was the fourth game this year that Kerrigan has both led all Skins’ edge rushers in snaps and recorded a sack. The sack helped to stall San Francisco’s opening drive of the second half and hold them to a field goal.

Preston Smith- Preston Smith will not be denied! He sacked an opposing QB for the fifth consecutive game (6 of his last 7 games). This week’s sack was split with Matt Ioannidis on a 3rd-and-8 midway through the first quarter.

Smith didn’t stop there, though. He defended a pass, tackled Carlos Hyde for a 3-yard loss on a 2nd-and-5 and absolutely destroyed C.J. Beathard for a QB hit.

Through 5 games and over the course of 223 defensive snaps, Smith has already matched his 2016 sack total of 4.5, a number he posted over the course of 768 snaps and 16 games last year.

Smith became just the fourth Redskins player since 1982 (when sack data began to be recorded) to get at least half a sack in each of the first five games of a season. The others were Charles Mann (1989), Fred Stokes (1991) and Monte Coleman (2000).

Let me finish up by listing every other NFL player with at least a half sack in five games this season: Everson Griffen, DeMarcus Lawrence, Calais Campbell, Chandler Jones and Julius Peppers.

Junior Galette- Junior Galette’s 24 snaps against the 49ers represented his second highest snap total as a Redskin (26 snaps @ Kansas City). Unfortunately, he totally squared the opportunity.

Galette failed to tally a single stat of any kind in this game. He did not make a tackle for the first time since Week 1 and was unable to pressure the QB for the first time this season.

Over his last 2 games and 50 snaps he has totaled just 1 tackle and 1 pressure (a hit).

Ryan Anderson- After unexpectedly playing on nearly half of the snaps against the Raiders (24 snaps and 47%), Ryan Anderson played on fewer than 10 snaps for the second straight game. If you exclude his playing time against Oakland, he is only averaging 10 plays and a 15% defensive snap-share per game.

The second rounder from Alabama did not record a stat of any kind in this game and has only recorded 2 tackles (1 TFL) and 1 pressure (a hurry) on his 63 defensive and 33 special teams snaps this season. Until further notice, consider him an ineffective role player whose purpose is to give the other edge rushers a breather.

Chris Carter- Carter continued to operate in a virtually exclusive special teams role. He did not take a snap on defense for the third time this year and has only been on the field for 2 defensive plays.

Zach Brown- Brown played on 100% of the defensive snaps for the third time this year. He is tied for the team lead in defensive snaps played and has only missed 3 snaps all season.

His 6 solo and 8 total tackles were both tied for the most on the team. Brown has either led the team or tied the team high in total tackles in all five games. San Francisco lost yardage on two of those tackles, but Brown was only credited with 1 TFL, because he and Swearinger teamed for the other stop. Half of Brown’s tackles came on the 49ers’ final drive of the first half, including a takedown of George Kittle just short of the goal line.

As usual, Brown didn’t fare as well in coverage, but he was bailed out by a couple of 49ers’ drops in his coverage that would have gone for first downs. He did, however, make a heads up play in coverage when he purposefully ran into Pierre Garcon and drew an offensive pass interference penalty that pushed San Francisco out of game-winning field goal range.

Per ESPN, the 27.3% win probability change on that play was the third highest among all plays on Sunday (i.e. it was a really important play).

PFF has Zach Brown with the 4th highest grade in run defense among 82 qualifying inside backers. Again, the problem always comes back to coverage, where he is ranked 62nd.

Mason Foster- Foster also played on every snap, which would lead you to believe that he is almost fully recovered from his shoulder injury. He might be getting there, but his season-low 2 total tackles (1 solo and 1 assisted) seem to tell a different story. Neither tackle was especially helpful, either; both of them came on first-down passes on 3rd-and-8 (12 yards and 10 yards).

On the plus side, Foster registered QB hit when he leveled Brian Hoyer and caused what initially looked like a forced fumble that would be scooped up for a Redskins’ score. Unfortunately, the call was overturned.

Other ILB- Neither Will Compton nor Martrell Spaight saw any action on defense for the first time since Week 1. Compton had only played on 7 defensive snaps in Weeks 1-4, while Spaight had played on 89 snaps and made 17 tackles between Weeks 3 and 4. Josh Harvey-Clemons was inactive for the fourth time in five games.

Quinton Dunbar- Dunbar started for the fourth time in his career, and shined as Josh Norman’s replacement for the second week in a row.

He posted a team high 6 solo and 8 total tackles, both of which were career highs. He made 5 of those 8 tackles short of the line to gain, with 4 of those counting as defensive stops. He also had 2 pass defenses in the game (tied for another career high); a third PD was negated by Garcon’s OPI.

He was targeted a whopping 14 times, but only gave up 8 receptions for 82 yards on those throws (5.9 yards per target).

He earned a game-high 88.0 Pro Football Focus grade. This was the second game in a row that he was PFF’s highest rated defender on the team. Dunbar’s 84.9 grade on the year ranks 2nd on the defense and 3rd on the entire team.

Bashaud Breeland- Breeland only played on just over half of the snaps and still made 6 solo tackles, which was tied for a team high. He also defended a pass to former Redskin Pierre Garcon on the 49ers’ first drive of the game.

He suffered an MCL injury midway through the third quarter when Joe Staley clipped him on a running play. His status is in doubt for next week against the Eagles.

Kendall Fuller- Fuller’s breakout sophomore campaign continued with another excellent outing. He allowed just 1 reception for 31 yards (vs. George Kittle) on 3 targets.

He also defended a third-down pass on Washington’s side of the field and recorded the game-clinching interception on the 49ers’ final drive of the game. The pick was the second of Fuller’s career and his second in the last three games.

Fuller’s 85.8 PFF rating in the game ranked 3rd on the Redskins’ defense.

The combined passer rating for quarterbacks when targeting Fuller this season is 40.5, which means that you’re almost better off throwing the ball away than you are targeting him (39.6 rating for 1 incompletion).

His 88.4 season-long PFF rating and his 6th place positional ranking on the site are both tops on the team.

Fabian Moreau- Injuries pressed Moreau into action against the 49ers. He played on a career-high 34 snaps and 47% of the plays. His snap count and snap percentage have increased in every week of the season. He made 3 tackles on the day (2 solo) and defended a pass.

But what he will probably be remembered for in this game was his coverage bust on Aldrick Robinson’s late touchdown. Moreau did not switch off and follow Robinson and with Montae Nicholson in the middle of the field, the former Redskin, Robinson, made the easy catch down the sideline.

Moreau was, however, able to find some redemption when he recovered an onside kick to start the next drive.

He left the game with hamstring tightness on San Francisco’s final drive.

Joshua Holsey- Holsey was active for the first time in his career and also took his first defensive snaps as an NFL player. All five of his snaps came on the final drive of the game. He did not record any stats and was not targeted on any of those plays.

Josh Norman- This was the first game that Norman missed as a member of the Redskins. The last time did not play in a game was in October of 2014 as a member of the Panthers.

He has only allowed 6 receptions, 89 yards and 0 touchdowns this season. Get well soon, Josh. The Redskins need you back.

D.J. Swearinger- Swearinger played on all but one snap, and he only missed that play because he suffered a shoulder stinger. He is tied with Zach Brown for the team lead in defensive snaps this year (314).

Swearinger defended a pass for the first time since Week 1 (should’ve been an interception) and earned the second highest PFF grade on the defense (86.3).

With Montae Nicholson patrolling the deep part of the field, Swearinger has been given more opportunities to make plays in the box. Three of Swearinger’s tackles came within 1-yard of the line of scrimmage, with one of them going for a loss.

His one big misstep in the game was when he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the first half. That penalty gave the 49ers a new set of downs inside the 5-yard line.

I appreciate that he had his teammates back, but his inability to control his emotions allowed the 49ers to score 4 additional points and that could’ve been the difference from a win and a loss.

Montae Nicholson- The athletic safety out of Michigan State made his third start in the last four games. He finished the contest with career highs in snaps played (63), snap percentage (88%), solo tackles (4) and total tackles (6). Nicholson also recorded the second pass defense of his career on a 2nd-and-10 Pierre Garcon target.

You can certainly see the potential in Montae Nicholson, but he is also far from a finished product. He was too far out of position to make a play on the late touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson that let the Niners sneak back into the game. He was also flagged for unnecessary roughness in the first quarter.

Nicholson suffered a minor shoulder injury when he was trucked by Garcon at the end of the first half.

Stefan McClure- McClure came to spot Swearinger and Nicholson when they missed time with injuries, but he too was bit by the injury bug, despite playing on only 10 snaps.

Other Safeties- In Monday’s press conference, Jay Gruden said that Deshazor Everett is expected to resume practicing after missing Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. DeAngelo Hall may also begin practicing either this week or next.

Snaps- Of the team’s 46 active players, 36 of them saw time over the course of 30 special teams snaps. This group included 19 defenders, 14 offensive players and 3 specialists. Chase Roullier, Will Compton, Martrell Spaight and Chris Carter were the only Redskins with purely special teams roles.

Chris Carter led the team in specials snaps for what seems like the 100th consecutive week. Rookie DBs Josh Holsey, Stefan McClure and Fabian Moreau were right behind him. Veterans Will Compton and Niles Paul were also near the top of the list with 20 teams snaps each.

Kick Coverage- San Francisco’s only return in the game was a punt return that Trent Taylor took 39 yards and all the way out to midfield. Chris Carter and Mason Foster made the tackle on the return.

That was by far the longest punt return that the Redskins have allowed this season (previous high of 12 yards). Luckily, the 49ers would end up missing a field goal on that drive.

Dustin Hopkins- All six of Hopkins’ kickoffs in the game went for touchbacks and he remained perfect on field goals from 50 or fewer yards out (9 for 9), as he hit on kicks from 21 and 48 yards out.

He did, however, miss an extra point for the first time since Week 14 of last season. That miss nearly cost the Skins the game, but it might be fair to give Hopkins a pass on it, considering we found out that he suffered either a strained or torn muscle in his hip.

He will miss the next game, which will force the team to both sign a kicker and to release another player.

Tress Way- Taylor’s return turned Way’s 45.3 punting average into a 30.5-yard net average, the fourth lowest mark of his career.

Way also failed to pin the 49ers inside their own 20-yard line on the final drive of the game. He, instead, sailed the ball through the end zone for a touchback.

He did, at least, have one punt that was fair caught at the San Francisco 16.

Kickoff Returns- Washington did not return a single kickoff for the third consecutive game, as all three 49ers’ kickoffs were touchbacks.

Punt Returns- After not returning a single punt against Kansas City, Jamison Crowder took his only punt return of the game out to the Washington 16-yard line for a gain of just 6 yards. He called for a fair catch on the other four punts that he fielded, with three of them coming inside the 20-yard line.

Crowder’s 45 punt return yards and 5.0 yards per return average rank 32nd and 25th in the league, respectively. Through five games in 2016, Crowder ranked 2nd in the NFL PR yards (194) and 1st in average return yards (27.7-yards).

Sunday’s victory against a winless 49ers team should have been much more comfortable than it actually was. The Redskins offense looked crisp from the start, and got off to an early 17-0 lead before allowing 17 unanswered points to end the half, and start the third quarter.

Unfortunately, some poor calls on the field, and a few mistakes in coverage led to a close game down the stretch. This may have been the 49ers Super Bowl, and the Redskins, who were banged up in the secondary before this game started, got even more dinged up as the game progressed. Still, a win is a win no matter how ugly, and 3-2 is a lot better than 2-3.

Below are my Studs and Duds of the game.

Studs:

Kirk Cousins - Despite the ESPN headline saying “Cousins struggles as Redskins barely hold on to beat 49ers” (at least ESPN will use the name Redskins unlike another sites whose lead writer refuses to), Kirk played a very solid game. He was 25/37 for 330 yards and 2 touchdowns versus just one interception (which was just as effective as a punt). He also ran for 26 yards and a touchdown, and was sacked just once while averaging almost 9 yards per completion and spreading the ball around nicely. If this is what someone views as struggling, please let him “struggle” the rest of the season!

Chris Thompson - CT continues to dazzle in this offense. He is a major weapon in the passing game, hauling in four receptions for 105 yards on the afternoon. He ran the ball effectively, although his 2.1 yards per carry average doesn’t tell the whole story. The only negative was the early fumble that was recovered by Trent Williams.

Ryan Grant - Yes, Grant once again finds himself on the Studs list. He hauled in three receptions for 39 yards, but two of those receptions went for key first downs, and none of the receptions were easy catches.

Stacy McGee - McGee played his best overall game as a Redskins to date, showing good ability to play off blocks and make tackles and generate pressure on the quarterback.

Matt Ioannidis - Ioannidis continues to be the Redskins most effective defensive linemen. He was credited with 3 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 4 quarterback hits. He’s been a disruptive force all season.

Preston Smith - Smith continues to impress this season. He was credited with a half sack (he now has 4.5 over 5 games), 1.5 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hits, multiple pressures, and a pass defended. Solid game for the youngster.

D.J. Swearinger - Swearinger was all over the field Sunday afternoon. He had a few nice tackles that stopped the 49ers short of the first down, and made a great diving defense of a pass midway through the 2nd quarter. He had 6 tackles in the game, with one for a loss.

Quinton Dunbar - Dunbar stepped up big-time with the loss of Norman, and then Breeland later in the game. He had solid coverage on some deep attempts, and showed very well tackling in the secondary. He had 8 stops and two passes defended to go along with his excellent coverage.

Duds:

Zach Brown - It’s hard to call the man who leads the team in tackles a dud, but I thought Brown was poor in coverage (he was lucky his man dropped some easy catches) and missed some tackles on the day. Just not what we expect to see from him at this point.

Mason Foster - Foster did a nice job creating pressure when he was blitzed, but he struggled in coverage all afternoon, as San Francisco chose to attack underneath with backs and tight ends.

Ryan Anderson - The second round pick is literally the invisible man out there. I know Junior Galette is too, but no one expected much from him. Anderson on the other hand has been off to an incredibly slow start.

Dustin Hopkins - A missed extra point! Really! That could have cost us the game if...

The Refs - I know this may sound like whining, but man did this crew blow some big calls! The call on Davis’ “fumble” was just horrible! So was the personal foul on the block by Brandon Scherff, and the hit on a defenseless receiver by Montae Nicholson (clean hit with his shoulder to the shoulder of the receiver - this is football for hell’s sake!).

Notes:

Gotta give a shoutout to Trent Williams for playing hurt. I thought he played a good game. He was charged with a sack, but Cousins vacated the pocket and essentially ran right into Thomas on that play. TW blocked very well down field, and looked fleet of foot despite the knee issue.

Jordan Reed is a BAD blocker!

Morgan Moses is getting off the ball a bit too early to set up in pass Pro. He was flagged once, but a saw a few other times where he looked a half second early.

Jamison Crowder is starting to look like himself again - this could be very dangerous; in a good way!

Nicholson is going to be one hell of a Safety here for years to come!

Kendall Fuller had a nice pick to seal the victory. He had nice underneath coverage.
