Ron Rivera names Jacoby Brissett the starting QB vs the San Francisco 49ers; Sam Howell benched

Sam Howell stays on the bench

NFL: Buffalo Bills at Washington Commanders Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Ron Rivera made the decision that most people expected him to make today. Jacoby Brissett has been named the starting quarterback for Sunday’s home game against San Francisco 49ers. Brissett has played in the last two games after starter Sam Howell was benched. Howell has been struggling for weeks, but the last two games were his worst as a pro, and the regression has been evident. Howell will now be the #2 QB and watch veteran Brissett run Eric Bieniemy’s offense.

Brissett has been solid in relief the last two weeks. He scored touchdowns on his two drives vs the Los Angeles Rams, ad then led the team on three scoring drives after coming in vs the New York Jets last week. Washington got the lead after being down by 20, but the Jets came back and kicked the game-winning field goal. Brissett started 11 games for the Cleveland Browns last year, and had a 4-7 record as a starter. He returned to the bench when Deshaun Watson’s suspension ended.
