The Rebuild: 2024 NFL Draft

Draft Setup:

New Front Office states their desire to build behind Sam, using 2024 to retool. They will sign high-level veterans at Edge & Corner & MLB prior to the draft.

And with the 5th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders select…

P5) Olu Fashanu, Tackle, PSU - 6’6" 320

Rationale: Shows prototypical high-end movement skills, combined with a solid anchor in pass protection. And since the franchise now has an asset in Sam Howell worth building around, this is the perfect pick to protect the blindside, while making Charles Leno’s $15.75M contract expendable (Cap Savings: $7.5M)

P36) Ja’Tavion Sanders, Tight End, TEX - 6’4" 243

Rationale: With 4.56 speed, soft hands, and sneaky athleticism, this high-level competitive drive that gives him the potential to claim the top spot on the depth chart and end Logan Thomas’ time in Washington (Cap Savings: $6.57M)

P38) Kingsley Suamataia, Tackle, BYU

Rationale: At 6’6" 325, another hog-sized OL with plus-athleticism, agility and speed. Adept pass blocker who is still learning to apply himself fully in the run game. A move like this could push Andrew Wylie off the roster (Cap Savings: $4.25M)

P70) Jackson Powers-Johnson, Center, ORE - 6’3" 320

Rationale: Solid in pass & run blocking, with the athleticism to pull and make blocks along the edge. Carries great energy and enthusiasm for the game. And once again, this potentially pushes Nick Gates out (Cap Savings: $1.8M)

P100) Christian Mahogany, Guard, BC - 6’3" 322

Rationale: Great size, understands angles and leverage while having the ability to move and work up to 2nd level defenders. Earns good pass blocking scores, but occasionally struggles with quickness on the interior.

P105) Edgerrin Cooper, Linebacker, TAM - 6’3" 230

Rationale: This guy can cover TEs, need I say more. Rangy, tough tackler - maybe a touch light for the position currently.

P139) Kyree Jackson, Cornerback, ORE - 6’3" 195

Rationale: Tall, long, fast and built. Great potential here.

P183) Jawar Jordan, Running Back, LOU - 5’9" 172

Ratiionale: Does not possess elite speed, but he’s shiftier than either BROB or AG24.

P224) Tory Taylor, Punter, Iowa

Rationale: Can hit bombs, and is masterful at pinning teams deep in their own end. Plus it could result in Cap Savings of up to $3.15M.

These draft linemen, along with Cosmi rebuild a true Hog OL that we’ve all been waiting for: 323 - 325 -320 - 310 - 325 - with good athleticism scores.

Given the mistakes made in free agency this gives the front office additional cap resources (up to another ~$23M), in addition to the $90M they have currently to invest in scheme-matched players who are in their prime either via trade or free agency.

The future looks bright in Washington!
