Update: Jon Toth released

There are no big surprises in the latest group of four players to be released by the Washington Football Team. The announcement this morning was brief:

None of the players had much of a profile among fans.

Jordan Brown played at South Dakota State and spent 2019 and 2020 on 4 practice squads, including several weeks late in the 2020 season with the Football Team. Rick Leonard had spent three seasons on 6 practice squads coming out of Florida State in 2018. Justin Phillips played at Oklahoma State University, and spent time on 3 practice squads in two seasons.

Justus Reed is a local player from Virginia Tech who was given a rare seventh year of eligibility by the NCAA prior to the 2020 season, choosing to play his final collegiate season in Blacksburg. He took advantage of the opportunity, leading the Hokies with 6.5 sacks in 11 games (10 starts). Reed recorded 28 total tackles, including nine for loss. He initially signed with the Titans in May, but was released and had just signed with Washington at the end of July.

These cuts follow the announcement yesterday of Tackle David Sharpe being activated from the COVID list and WR Steven Sims Jr. being released.

NFL teams are required to be at 80 active players by 4pm on Tuesday, 24 August. Washington is able to carry one extra player due to a roster exemption granted to the IPP program player, DT David Bada, from Germany. They will still need to release one more player before today's deadline.
