The Washington Football Team’s 2021 season starts tonight with a preseason game in New England against the Patriots. This will be the WFT’s first preseason game since the name change. Last year’s preseason was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ron Rivera wants to see Ryan Fitzpatrick take command of the offense tonight, and said no one has been ruled out for playing the Patriots. He emphasized the sense of urgency everyone should have this week with their first real game action since the playoff loss to the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January. Rivera wants to see consistency and communication on the field.

The Patriots are expected to play Ron Rivera’s old QB Cam Newton tonight, but they will also get a look at their QB of the future in 1st round pick Mac Jones. This will give Washington’s defense two very different QB styles to play against. Don’t expect to see too much of the starters on the field, but we will see enough of them to get a quick preview of what is expected to be a top 5 defense in the NFL this year.
