The Washington Football Team will reportedly exercise the fifth-year option for DT Daron Payne. This will extend his rookie contract through 2022, and will pay him $8.5 million fully guaranteed for that year. Jonathan Allen's fifth-year option was also extended last year as the team continues to work to keep the heart of their defense together.
The one-year salary, for 2022, is worth approximately $8.5 million and is fully guaranteed, thanks to a change in the collective bargaining agreement. Before the 2020 CBA, fifth years were guaranteed for injury only, and salary calculations were based on a player’s draft slot and position. For first-round picks drafted in 2018 and beyond, performance and play time also factor into fifth-year salaries.
Daron Payne has started 41 games since being drafted 13th overall in the 2018 NFL draft. He has 166 tackles, 10 sacks, 20 QB hits, one INT, nine passes defended,, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery during his 3 year career.
As expected, the Washington Football Team is officially exercising the fifth-year option for DT Daron Payne, per source. Worth ~$8.5M (playing time), fully guaranteed.
