Alex Smith Makes Rare Mistake

It was surprising to see Alex Smith jump into the dead and buried Colin Kaepernick controversy. Smith, who has said he wants to continue to play in the NFL really made a rare unforced error. In an interview on Wednesday Smith commented in regards to Kaepernick not being on an NFL roster that he, "Couldn't even grasp it. Couldn't understand it." Those words ring profoundly insincere from a man that knows the game, and the position, so well. No one can deny that Colin had a couple good years at the helm in San Francisco. But that's about it. In 6 years with the 49ers Kaepernick went 28-30, and was sacked more times and fumbled more often than any QB in the league. His last two years with the team he was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert, TWICE. In 2015 Kaepernick was 2-6 with a QB rating of 43 before being replaced by Gabbert. In those 8 games he threw 6 TDs and 8 interceptions. In 2016, his last year in the NFL, he was 1-10 with a QBR of 49 before being benched. I'll not get into any of the politics, suffice to say Alex Smith, known as a smart, level-headed guy should have known to steer clear of such a controversial topic. Especially as he is trying to attract interest from other NFL teams (it would be preposterous if Washington, with the youngest roster in the league and in the midst of a rebuild were to retain him). Regardless of what anyone thinks about kneeling during the anthem, the numbers don't lie. Kaepernick was average at best throughout his tenure in San Francisco and during his last two years he really stunk up the joint. Alex Smith's contention that he can't understand why Kaepernick is not playing in the NFL is baffling. Especially in light of the fact that he wasn't cut from the 49ers. He quit. Yes Alex, it's hard to imagine why every GM in the league isn't fighting over the right to sign a guy who hasn't played in five years and went 3-16 with a QBR of 46 his last two years in San Francisco. Oh yes, lest we forget, HE QUIT. What, Alex, is so impossibly difficult to comprehend?
