The roster cuts started yesterday with the surprising release of future Hall of Fame RB Adrian Peterson. Ron Rivera is putting his stamp on the Washington Football Team, and today’s moves give us a glimpse into what direction they are moving. He showed he wasn’t afraid to cut players that were signed, but didn’t perform well enough to earn a spot by cutting FS Sean Davis. He also cut draft picks from last year that didn’t work out like OL Ross Pierschbacher. Rivera also didn’t have a problem cutting one of his former players (LB Jared Norris). All of Washington’s 2020 draft picks did make the team.
Three players who were recovering from significant leg injuries had their fates decided today. Alex Smith has made the 53-man roster after breaking his leg two years ago, an injury that threatened to take his leg due to multiple infections/surgeries. Some thought the team might keep him on the 53, then place him on IR to open up a spot, and allow him to return later in the year, but that is not what the team is planning. If everything goes according to plan this season, we won’t see Alex Smith on the field this year, and he will continue to mentor starter Dwayne Haskins Jr.
Bryce Love was drafted in the 4th round last year, and the team planned on not having him available until this year due to a torn ACL he suffered during his last play in college. Love had some cleanup surgery, and there were concerns he wouldn’t be ready for the start of this year. Love came into camp looking to prove he belonged on the roster, and after the release of Derrius Guice, he was lined up to get a bigger role in the offense. With Adrian Peterson’s release, Love is locked in as a key player for Washington this year.
Reuben Foster’s comeback hasn’t gone as well as Love’s. He tore his ACL and LCL on the third play of OTAs last year, and suffered nerve damage that resulted in drop foot. He was activated off of the PUP list, and had been practicing with the team. Multiple reports said that his movement was limited, and his explosiveness was just not where it needed to be to play in the NFL. Washington declined his 5th year option earlier this year, and now he has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
