Washington is practicing Thursday at FedEx Field. But it won’t be a scrimmage, just a traditional practice. No TV expected.
— michael phillips (@michaelpRTD) August 24, 2020
Washington’s two out offensive linemen, OL Saahdiq Charles and G Wes Schweitzer, are on the sidelines in jerseys and shorts today. Charles is battling a right calf injury, and it’s unclear what’s up w Schweitzer. This is the first time we’ve seen Schweitzer. pic.twitter.com/dmTPzO6mIP
— Sam Fortier (@Sam4TR) August 24, 2020
Chase Young out here and in pads. That's not new. We'll see if he participates in practice.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 24, 2020
DE Chase Young (hip flexor) back in individual drills
— Sam Fortier (@Sam4TR) August 24, 2020
Moreau was down for a moment in yesterday's practice.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 24, 2020
Charles missing all of camp remains possible even if, as I was told, the calf injury is minor. https://t.co/G6NmJUMVZo
Among those not working today: CB Fabian Moreau, OL Saadhiq Charles, OL Wes Schweitzer, DE Nate Orchard, OL Mike Liedtke.

Charles is participating in stretching. Even some light, light running. That's a step. pic.twitter.com/Esed53uQMQ

I’m seeing with the 1s
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Troy Apke
Kerrigan
Pierre-Louis
Thomas Davis
Sweat
Moreland
Darby
Fuller
Christian
Martin
Holcomb
Allen
Gibson, Peterson and Logan Thomas also in with the 1s. Gibson moving in motion goes up the gut, and guess what? He burst through the hole for a big gain.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Jon Bostic blew up a run by Peyton Barber in the backfield. After the tackle, Barber was slow to get up. Now limping to the back of the field with a member of the staff. Looks like they’re working the left leg.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Peyton Barber was back in action in 11-11 RZ work.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 24, 2020
Antonio Gibson showed decisiveness and patience in his running. He had two runs, both big gains. One run prompted RBs coach Randy Jordan to yell out “There you go! There you go!” https://t.co/mLGMRoZ9Zu
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 24, 2020
Sunday, Adrian Peterson told us how he felt he still has to prove himself. He does not slow down going thru the hole today (or ever); gets popped, keeps going, hit again, keeps going...
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 24, 2020
Starting offense opens the first team period with two successful runs from Gibson, a short pass to Sims Jr. over the middle and a 10yd completion to McLaurin. Haskins carrying over the momentum he had at the end of practice yesterday.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 24, 2020
Red Zone 9v9 and Alex Smith rifles a TD throw to Antonio Gandy Golden but the rookie doesn’t bring it in
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
TE Coach Pete Hoener is giving the big time tongue lashing to Logan Thomas.."You're not ready to practice!" & "Get the bleep out of there." @WSHFootballSI @theMMQB @SInow
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 24, 2020
Pete Hoener will absolutely pull his tight ends if doesn’t think they’re playing fast. Logan Thomas caught the ball turned up field, but didn’t accelerate enough for Hoener. Also told him to protect the ball better. This coaching staff is extremely in sync about playing fast.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Alex Smith facing pass rush rolls out to the right and finds Cam Sims in the end zone. That might have been his best play yet.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
Alex Smith looked GOOD during his three snaps of the day.
— michael phillips (@michaelpRTD) August 24, 2020
Three scrambles, three throws on the run, three that hit receivers in the numbers.
Just one completion.
Alex Smith in 9-9 work. First pass: strike to AGG. Dropped. Second pass: pressure from Ioannidis; Smith escapes right and on the run a strike to Cam Sims for a TD. Last one: to Trey Quinn; SDH there and strips.
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 24, 2020
Alex Smith continues to display the movement needed for playing quarterback. On his first 9-on-9 play, Smith avoided a rushing Ioannidis by calmly stepping up in the pocket and firing a bullet (which was dropped in the end zone). Next play, Smith rolled out right and hit C. Sims
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 24, 2020
DB coach Chris Harris gets so hype for his guys and the defense overall. DB was able to force Trey Quinn to drop the pass, Harris said, “Not in Gotham City!!”
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Starting defense with a strong showing during 9-on-9 drills in the red zone. Haskins tried to find Inman twice, but the passes fell incomplete.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 24, 2020
Word to the wise, if you lose Steven Sims Jr. in the red zone, it’ll probably end in an easy score for him. Somehow, he was by himself coming across the formation, Haskins found him for the walk-in touchdown.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Chase Young is running sprints on the back practice field during ST session. Appears from far distance to be running fairly well. Four different @WashingtonNFL players were grinding hard on the power exercise bikes in race form. @WSHFootballSI
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 24, 2020
The secondary has been like this too. https://t.co/fr0mWp4sz5
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 24, 2020
Blocking Cole Holcomb on a screen? Not fun, Dontrelle Inman got rocked and Holcomb was able to mess up the pass to J.D. McKissic. Had blockers coming too if Holcomb didn’t obliterate the play
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Red zone work and Haskins plays fast w TD throw to McLaurin. Coaches seemed pleased
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
Last 11v11 rep for Haskins, he gets the ball to Terry McLaurin, with Ronald Darby not far behind. Turns up field and beats Darby to the pylon for the score.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Adrian Peterson just keeps the hands of time turned backwards. Blows up the middle of the formation on consecutive plays for two touchdowns. He goes in ready to hit anyone in his way
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Kyle Allen has some wheels on him, man. Escape the pocket to the right, sees nothing but space and opportunity to cross the goal line. Let’s out some enthusiasm. Coach Ron Rivera claps it up for him coming back to the huddle.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Offense tried a reverse on its second set of red zone reps. Not only did Montez Sweat read it all the way and blow the play up, he forced Terry McLaurin to fumble and Landon Collins scooped it up to go the other way.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Troy Apke pops Logan Thomas and the ball comes out. Defense is fired up. Serious contact.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
The defense has forced two fumbles in the red zone, and my god, Troy Apke forced the second one with an incredible hit.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 24, 2020
Logan Thomas at QB, decides to tuck it and run. Troy Apke rings his bell, forces the fumble and Shaun Dion Hamilton comes up with the recovery. Defense is playing fast, hitting harder today
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Also working back, James Smith-Williams, on the final rep for the 2s, was able to peel off his offensive lineman and tag Kyle Allen for the sack. Just watched him go head to head with a RB and won it easily for little to no gain.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Haven’t tweeted about Jordan Brailford much, but he’s got a great motor from what I watched the last week. He worked from the left side of the line back to the right to pursue and force Steven Montez to unload it into the trees.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Haskins has also continued his strong start to practice. Completed passes to McKissic and McLaurin. On the McLaurin pass, McLaurin stretched the ball into the end zone before stepping out of bounds.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 24, 2020
Something interesting, Scott Turner is playing with having Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic on the field simultaneously. Something to watch
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Nice PBU by Moreland on Inman. Looked like Inman was going to come down with it, but Moreland popped the ball loose at the last second.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 24, 2020
Chase Young in for 11-on-11 red zone work. Big step forward for him.
— michael phillips (@michaelpRTD) August 24, 2020
Offense has easily scored on both goal line sets. Adrian Peterson getting some resistance but gets in, then Dwayne Haskins finds Jeremy Sorinkle all by his lonesome in the back of the end zone. Marcus Baugh was the FB. Peterson closes it out with another TD to right side.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Chase Young looked like every bit of a former basketball player on first rep for 2s. All in Kyle Allen’s face. Sends the pass back to sender.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
And then Chase Young blows up a run play to his edge. Blows it up. It appears he’s happy to be back on the field.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
@youngchase907 looking like Superman off the left edge now..leaping up (timed perfectly) and swatting a Kyle Allen pass. Also looked good on run support/contain. https://t.co/Q7oxjREr6H
— Chris Russell AKA The Rooster (@Russellmania621) August 24, 2020
Haskins bootleg roll out to his left connects with Logan Thomas for TD. Good run fake.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
Antonio Gibson with back to back scores. Was able to escape Chase Young’s grasp and got to the outside in the right. Then he worked up the middle on the second run up the gut.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
The tight ends have been having a field day in the goal line situations. Logan Thomas was all by himself in the left corner. Adrian Peterson finishes the scenario with two runs attacking the heart of the defense to score.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Haskins is starting to stack up good days of practice. He has looked strong all day and just delivered two TD passes to Sprinkle and Logan Thomas.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 24, 2020
Takeaways from latest team period:
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) August 24, 2020
- Haskins hits McLaurin near left sideline with Fuller in coverage
- Moreland with 2 pass breakups
- Cam Sims makes 2 catches from Haskins/Allen
- Bryce Love also makes a reception and earns praise from Scott Turner. “Good job, Bryce.”
New team president Jason Wright just walked out to practice. Today is his first day on the job.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Jason Wright and owner Dan Snyder are catching up on the far field. Sort of watching the action, more engaged in talking to one another
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Practice ends and Ron Rivera introduces Jason Wright to the Washington team. Cool moment. The players all clapped and seem sincerely excited.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
Today is Jason Wright’s first day and Ron Rivera is having him address the team after practice. pic.twitter.com/bIRoPVJFlP
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 24, 2020
Biggest play of camp so far - Haskins throws a bomb to McLaurin in the corner of the end zone for a TD. Offense was FIRED UP after the play. Was quite impressive.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 24, 2020
The defense hasn't been shy about gloating throughout this camp. Today, it was the offense's turn. Terry McLaurin just chucked the ball and ripped off his helmet after hauling in a pretty long pass from Haskins over Greg Stroman for a touchdown. Haskins ran over to greet him
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 24, 2020
TURN EM UP TERRY @dh_simba7 ➡️ @TheTerry_25 pic.twitter.com/tFjrS2esyZ
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) August 24, 2020
That was a solid end of practice for the starting offense during two-minute drills. Haskins was 5-8 and looked sharp with his passes. He ended the drive with a bomb to McLaurin, who was clearly fired up about the play.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) August 24, 2020
Ryan Bee and Jordan Brailford nearly combines to sandwich Kyle Allen on a sack. Brailford got to the edge, I missed how Bee beat his man. But they nearly got there at the same time.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 24, 2020
Defense now having a meeting post-practice. We haven’t seen that really since we’ve gotten access to camp. pic.twitter.com/ShUHrMF2sl
