Truthfully, I never thought we’d have this conversation. Not necessarily the conversation of “Alex Smith or Dwayne Haskins?” – although, technically, I never thought we’d have that discussion either. More so the conversation of “will Alex Smith play football again?”
Think back to a year ago, or six month or hell, think back to right after Project 11 aired. Seeing the wild journey he went through both physically and emotionally based on the injury I never thought Smith would play football again.
But here we are. 2020 continues to throw every surprise imaginable our direction.
Smith has been cleared for football activities by his doctors and will likely soon be cleared by team officials to practice.
With that in mind, we come to the big question. Who should be QB1, Alex Smith or Dwayne Haskins?
Ron Rivera has stated, “pure competition” is what the quarterback position will be in camp. A statement that is both scary and exciting all in one.
I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m a huge Haskins guy. That hasn’t changed. I think entering Week 1 Dwayne Haskins should be the starting quarterback for The Washington Football Team.
The work Haskins has been putting in this offseason has been very impressive. He has expressed that he’s more comfortable entering camp this season and I’m expecting that to show in his performance.
When it comes to Smith ever playing football again, I think I side with the “I hope he doesn’t” crew. The journey that Alex Smith has been on is nothing short of amazing, beautiful, or whatever word you want to describe it with. But there are two major issues I have with him being our quarterback.
The first and obvious reason is that I don’t want to see him get hurt again. To be honest, I’ve never really been uncomfortable watching football. It’s understood that the game is violent and there are going to be injuries. But for whatever reason, watching Smith play again would just strike a little different. There is a real sense of anxiousness in thinking of him getting hit again.
Secondly, on a much more football related note, building around a 36-year-old quarterback coming off a major injury and doesn’t have any major ties to the current coaching staff seems odd. The math doesn’t quite add up there.
If the team is truly in the process of a rebuild – like a real rebuild – Dwayne Haskins is the guy to center it around.
Who would you take? Alex Smith or Dwayne Haskins?
Who should be Washington’s QB1 to start the 2020 season?
