The Redskins lost backup QB Case Keenum in free agency to the Cleveland Browns(3 years, $18 million). Colt McCoy is destined to either retire or become Jay Gruden's assistant QB coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. And Alex Smith is being groomed to be Dan Snyder's new best friend/GM.
That leaves Washington with zero viable backups to starting QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. New Head Coach Ron Rivera has talked about bringing in a veteran to compete with Haskins and to push him. There has been a pretty high amount of QB activity in free agency this year. The QB carousel keeps spinning and some big names have been left on the outside looking in.
The name that has obviously been linked with Washington is Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton. The team announced they would be trying to trade Newton, which he said wasn't his decision. They then agreed to a deal with former Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater. Josina Anderson reports that the Redskins have discussed the possibility of bringing him to DC, but they're in wait and see mode as they watch the market that develops for him.
The problem with bringing in any big name veteran QB like Newton is the salary they would get with Alex Smith still on the books for $21 million this year. It would also show a lack of faith in your 2nd-year QB. Newton is not getting signed here unless they've determined Haskins isn't the answer.
Regarding Washington as a potential destination for Cam Newton, I'm told the team discussed it, talks did not rise to the level of definitive interest at this time, more of a "wait & see mode" right now observing Newton's market. #Skins also like their young guys too, per source.

The new name being linked to the Redskins today is former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston. He will be replaced by Tom Brady once the contract is finalized. Winston was a turnover machine last year with 30 interceptions and 12 fumbles(5 lost).
Per @ESPNBooger the Redskins could pursue Jameis Winston to back-up Dwayne Haskins, and after Ryan Tannehill's success with Titans in 2019, it could make sense https://t.co/HhIdnJomt2

FWIW: there is no chance of the Redskins acquiring Jameis Winston. Spoke to a source earlier this morning.

Monday Night Football analyst Booger McFarland says Winston is in play to backup Haskins in Washington. John Keim I’m followed that up by saying no chance that’s happening. I’ll go with Keim on this, but no one knows what Winston will ask for in a backup role.
