The Redskins have officially placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on right guard Brandon Scherff. This move was expected for a while, even though the Redskins were reportedly working on an extension to avoid the tag.
The Redskins have been trying to work out a new contract with Scherff since at least last year, but the sides were far apart. The last reported offer from the Redskins was $13+ million per year. The free agent market is expected to produce some eye-popping deals if the new CBA is approved tonight.
Scherff is projected to make $16.1 million this year on the franchise tag. The Redskins want him to be here long-term, and Scherff has said he wants to finish his career here. But the two sides have not been able to work out a new deal.

This means he can talk to other teams. Skins can match or receive 2 first round picks (that can be negotiated as well)... They want to keep of course.
