Was there ever any doubt? The Redskins have exercised their club option on Adrian Peterson’s contract, meaning he will return for a 3rd season in Washington. The Redskins get their most consistent RB over the last two seasons back for $3 million in 2020.
“Adrian Peterson is the epitome of what it means to be a pro in this league,” said Head Coach Ron Rivera. “Adrian’s leadership and passion towards the game of football will set an example of what is expected of the players in this program moving forward.”
The Redskins drafted Derrius Guice in the 2nd round 3 years ago, and hoped he would be their featured back. When he tore his ACL against the Patriots in his first preseason game, that plan got delayed. Doug Williams brought Peterson in for a workout, and he blew everyone away. Jay Gruden made Peterson a healthy scratch in Week 1 last year hoping to feature Guice. That lasted one week when Guice tore his meniscus vs the Eagles. Guice would return Week 11, but was placed on IR for the 3rd time in two seasons three weeks later with a sprained MCL.
Adrian Peterson has rushed 462 times for 1,940 yards(4.2 Y/A) for 12 TDs since joining the Redskins. He has also caught 37 passes for 350 yards and 1 TD. Peterson returns to a backfield that he will hopefully share with a healthy Derrius Guice and 2019 4th pick Bryce Love who was also shelved last year for a knee injury.
The Redskins announced that they have exercised the 2020 club option on Adrian Peterson’s contract.
