Alex Smith just had his first back-to-back 300 yard passing games in his career. He finished his first start in 728 days with a 38/55 390 yard stat line. J.D. McKissic scored his first TD since 2017, and Antonio Gibson scored twice.
Washington entered the 2nd half with in a 17-3 hole following another 1st half filled with missed opportunities. They tied it up with under a minute to go in a game that looked like it was going to overtime. Matthew Stafford wasn’t having that, and he got them in field goal range with the help of a Chase Young roughing the passer penalty. Matt Prater finished it off with a 59 yard FG.
3rd Quarter
Defensive struggles:
2nd and 20, Washington get caught blitzing SS Kam Curl. Lions sneak in an RB screen in the flat. No LB spots it, Lions pick up a first down. pic.twitter.com/ZS28yhCCEB
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
Lions convert on 2nd and 20. Swift had tons of room after the catch against a social distancing Washington defense.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) November 15, 2020
Lot of missed tackles on that massive play by Swift. Have to come away with a stop on situations like that. Just have to.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) November 15, 2020
Deshazor Everrett hurt, Troy Apke in:
Deshazor Everett is questionable with an ankle injury.
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) November 15, 2020
Troy Apke and Kam Curl are the #WashingtonFootball safeties now. I repeat: Troy Apke and Kam Curl are the #WashingtonFootball safeties now.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) November 15, 2020
Lions score again:
Lions motion Swift out of the backfield, Jon Bostic follows him. Lions know it's man coverage. Swift runs a pivot route, working inside before breaking sharply back outside. Bostic completely beaten and Swift runs away from him for a TD. pic.twitter.com/q4yGb1FgVM

Washington scores after converting a big 4th down:

Cam Sims:
Cam Sims is earning more playing time and targets. Doing a lot of little things well (recovered a fumble earlier, some tough blocks), also picked up 4th down coversions. Here, runs dagger concept and gets low to secure the catch for 19 yards. pic.twitter.com/2t5UDwMxg0

4th Quarter
Isaiah Wright making plays:
Just mentioned Cam Sims doing little things well to earn more reps. Had an important block here to seal the defense inside and let Wright get to the edge on the screen. Nearly resulted in a TD. pic.twitter.com/BddWfHO8aR
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
Isaiah Wright tried so hard to get that touchdown. Hell of a hurdle, spin and couldn't keep his balance
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) November 15, 2020
Antonio Gibson punches it in:
TD for @AntonioGibson14
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) November 15, 2020
Keep fighting
#WASvsDET FOX pic.twitter.com/3VUTOsjPoG
Antonio Gibson scores his sixth rushing touchdown in nine-career NFL games. XP is good, and @WashingtonNFL is within a touchdown. 24-17 Lions with about 11 minutes left.

Alex 300:
Alex Smith right now: 30-of-36 for 271 yards. Smith is creeping up on 300 yards for the second time in two weeks -- a feat he has never accomplished in his career.
— Zach Selby (@ZachDSelby) November 15, 2020
Kam Curl missile sack:
Washington show a big blitz off the left side of the Lions OL, then last second bail out and bring pressure from the right side. Kam Curl comes free and eventually brings down Stafford for the sack. pic.twitter.com/5F9VoGI09L
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
Jack Del Rio loves that late game Kam Curl safety blitz
— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) November 15, 2020
Bro Kam Curl was a homing missile on that play, wow
— Riggo's Rag (@RiggosRag) November 15, 2020
Jack Del Rio doesn't blitz Kam Curl often, but in big moments, he lets him go. Sacked Daniel Jones late last week and Matt Stafford (the second time) this week. Shows how much they trust the rookie.

Cornelius Lucas injured, Morgan Moses to LT, David Sharpe to RT:
Cornelius Lucas is injured. Walking off the field as David Sharpe takes over.
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) November 15, 2020
Sharpe is left tackle No. 3 for Washington this season.
Morgan Moses slides to left tackle. Sharpe RT.

Alex 300:
300 yards passing for Alex Smith in back to back games ... amazing #WashingtonFootball
— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) November 15, 2020
Alex Smith is 32 of 39 for 329 yards and zero turnovers. Just unbelievable.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) November 15, 2020
Steven Sims Jr. sighting:
Nice work by Steven Sims challenging vertical to get the CB to feel threatened. Sims then breaks outside and is wide open for Alex Smith. pic.twitter.com/Y638OZdOKm
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
Antonio Gibson TD ties it up:
Antonio Gibson is raw as a runner, but his athleticism shines through. Run designed to go inside but feels defender bursting through from the back side, so he bounces it to the edge and walks in for the TD. pic.twitter.com/8G2y0NGMSe
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
Lions get the go-ahead FG:
Detroit responds with a 37-yard field goal to make it 27-24 with 2:37 left. Alex Smith will get a chance to lead Washington for a game-winning drive. Over the last three possession, Smith has missed just two passes to go 18 for 20. Washington scored a TD each time.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) November 15, 2020
Washington stumbles early on their final drive:
New RT David Sharpe's penalty puts the team in a brutal spot.
— Sam Fortier (@Sam4TR) November 15, 2020
The Football Team faces a 3rd-and-13 from their own 8-yard line. They have one timeout and 1:56 to get themselves in field-goal range. For Dustin Hopkins, that's probably the Detroit 36 or so?
Terry McLaurin!:
Hell of a route on 3rd and long by Terry McLaurin. Beat the CB on his release. Nice ball from Smith to pick up the 1st down. pic.twitter.com/piHNLcP6Yh
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
What a friggin' throw from Alex Smith. On the money to Terry McLaurin for a 26-yard gain.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) November 15, 2020
Help from the zebras:
Very questionable pass interference call against the Lions to keep Washington in the game.
— MarkMaske (@MarkMaske) November 15, 2020
Washington is getting a number of breaks, defensive holding called Trufant on 3rd down
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) November 15, 2020
Cam “Clutch” Sims:
Nice catch by Cam Sims on 3rd down. Smith was buying time and Sims kept crossing the middle to make himself available. Paid off with a big catch to covert pic.twitter.com/HVRZ34ezhZ
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
CAM SIMS IS LEGIT
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) November 15, 2020
Cam Sims has had some really remarkable contested catches. He's been covered and still hauls it in.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) November 15, 2020
How big has Cam Sims been the last 4 games? The dude is playing like a viable No. 2. The leap he's made over the past couple weeks is impressive.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) November 15, 2020
Jeff Badet?:
Now is probably not the time to give WR Jeff Badet his first target.
— Chad Ryan (@ChadwikoRCC) November 15, 2020
Delay of game with 31 seconds left:
That... man. Took a while to get out of the huddle.
— John Keim (@john_keim) November 15, 2020
Steven Sims Jr. is having a rough day:
Steven Sims drop. He has a fumble, a weird non fair catch, a drop, and he fell down on another catch today. Not ideal.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) November 15, 2020
Dustin Hopkins ties it up:
.@Dahop5
— Washington Football Team (@WashingtonNFL) November 15, 2020
#WASvsDET on FOX pic.twitter.com/coISkCRdpR
Dustin Hopkins' kick is good to tie it at 27. There's 16 seconds left.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) November 15, 2020
Washington almost allows a Matt Stafford bomb:
How on Earth is someone that wide open in that situation?
— John Keim (@john_keim) November 15, 2020
Chase Young called for roughing the passer:
Such a dumb penalty from Chase Young. Yes, it's minimal contact, but the ball was long gone and there's no need whatsoever to touch the QB. pic.twitter.com/2gq7jiQH48
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) November 15, 2020
That was a roughing call on Chase Young? Because he shoved Matt Stafford? OK. Sure.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) November 15, 2020
Game over:
Matt Prater hits a 59-yarder at the buzzer. Lions win 30-27.
