Redskins Rumors: GM won't be hired until after the draft, Morocco Brown a leading candidate

Head Coach? Check. Defensive Coordinator? Check. Special Teams Coordinator? Check. Offensive Coordinator? Working on it. Head Trainer? Working on it. GM? Waiting until after the draft.

The Redskins organization has gone through some pretty big changes since the team finished a 3-13 season with a blowout loss to the hated Dallas Cowboys. Bruce Allen, Bill Callahan, most of the coaches, and Head Trainer Larry Hess have all been fired. Ron Rivera has been hired as the Redskins’ 30th head coach, and he has hired Jack Del Rio as his defensive coordinator. Senior Vice President of Football Operations and General Counsel Eric Shaffer will reportedly be out after the draft.

What about the General Manager and Team President positions currently open with the team? Will they both be filled? Will someone already in the front office be promoted? No one knows for sure right now, but we keep getting reports putting potential names out there.

The latest rumor comes from Jason La Canfora who says the Redskins don't plan on hiring a GM until after this year's draft which will be held April 23-25 this year. This has been reported before and it was also Bruce Allen's plan after Scot McCloughan was fired. The Redskins never did actually hire a GM in 2017, they rearranged the front office and had several people working together under Allen.

The Redskins need to fill at least one of those roles this offseason. If they wait until after the draft as reported, Director of College Personnel Kyle Smith and Senior VP of Player Personnel will work closely with Rivera on the draft. One or both of them could be in line for promotions, especially with Schaffer reportedly out by May.

Here are the options Jason La Canfora lays out if they go outside the organization to fill the GM and Team President jobs.

General Manager:

As reported last week, the Skins won’t get around to overhauling their front office until after the draft, and the name I continue to hear the most chatter about in a general manager role is Colts executive Morocco Brown.

Brown is very well regarded in Indianapolis, where he helped Chris Ballard quickly upgrade one of the worst rosters in the NFL, and Brown was a favorite of Skins owner Dan Snyder during his lengthy stint in Washington’s personnel department. He also is well regarded by Ron Rivera from their time together in Chicago, and by Joe Gibbs, a close confidant of Snyder’s and someone who Rivera has reached out to for ccounsel.

Team President:

If Snyder does hire someone as a team president to replace Bruce Allen, who he recently fired after 10 years, there is talk within the Skins organization about him tabbing longtime Vikings GM Rick Spielman for that role. The Vikings could be headed for a shakeup if they lose to the Saints this weekend, and with Rivera getting more control in personnel for the first time in his career, having someone with significant experience as an evaluator/GM in the building is something Snyder is mulling, I’m told.
