Washington Redskins 2020 Draft Profiles: Khalid Kareem, EDGE, Notre Dame

Hogs Haven takes a look at prospects heading into the 2020 NFL Draft

NCAA Football: Camping World Bowl-Notre Dame vs Iowa State Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Khalid Kareem

Position: EDGE

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 265 lbs.

College: Notre Dame

Strengths:

Khalid Kareem has strength, length and power to shut down opposing running backs and get after the quarterback. He’s an explosive player who uses leverage to his advantage and should test well at the NFL Draft Combine. The Notre Dame product has shown the ability to overwhelm run and pass blockers, especially when rushing inside, and he plays without fear like his hair is on fire. Additionally, he has impressive closing speed when chasing quarterbacks and is relentless — he doesn’t give up on plays.

Weaknesses:

While he’s great at generating inside pressure, Kareem could stand to improve in beating blockers off the edge by varying his technique. Additionally, he needs to play with more discipline as a run defender at the next level to avoid over-pursuing and getting left behind in plays.

Why he may fit with Washington:

The Redskins have much room for improvement on defense, but Washington was able to pressure the quarterback fairly successfully, as the team ranked eighth in sack percentage in 2019. But, in later rounds, the Redskins could take a page out of the 49ers’ book and build strength on strength on the defensive line. San Francisco’s defensive line is arguably the greatest strength of a team that will host the NFC Championship after earning the conference’s top seed. Under new head coach Ron Rivera, Kareem may be a great piece to build around for years to come as Washington rebuilds.

Bottom Line:

Khalid Kareem is a tough, relentless defensive end with long arms who is relentless, and he projects as a solid contributor at the next level.

Projected Round: 3rd/4th round
