The 5 o’clock club is published Wednesday to Saturday during the season, and aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.
I thought I’d offer a few HYPOTHETICAL player-for-player trade scenarios to see what y’all think about them.
These are not intended to be taken as serious trade proposals, but as conversation starters — simple “what ifs” to get us thinking about the Philly and Washington rosters ahead of this week’s game. I’m offering up 4 pretend-trades:
- A rookie Redskin for a veteran Eagle
- A swap of 30-ish veterans
- A swap of recently drafted rookies
- A young Redskin veteran for an established Eagle
When considering the trade scenario, don’t worry about whether it’s realistic — it’s not. Just consider whether YOU would do it if you were the Redskins decision-maker. Feel free to take into account all relevant details, though - age, skill, contract, leadership, growth potential, etc.
Trade #1 - Dwayne Haskins for Carson Wentz

Haskins is all potential right now. He’s also cheap, at just $14.4m for four years. Carson Wentz just signed a big-dollar extension and has some miles on his body already. Some people think he may be snake-bit or injury-prone, but in his sophomore season he was considered by many to be a league-MVP candidate prior to his injury. In each pre-season game that the Redskins rookie played, he looked better than the one before, so he seems to be on a sharp upward trajectory. Like Haskins, Wentz has never seen the field in an NFL playoff game.
Trade #2 - Ryan Kerrigan for Nigel Bradham

Our 30-year-old outside linebacker for their 29-year-old off-the-ball linebacker? The Eagles fans seem to have more respect for Kerrigan than any other fan base in the NFL; they are almost superstitious about him. They might jump at this trade; I’m not sure. The Redskins are a bit shaky at inside linebacker. Would this make the Redskins stronger?
Trade #3 - Scary Terry McLaurin for J.J. Arcega-Whiteside

Two rookie draft picks. The Redskins’ 3rd round pick for the Eagles’ 2nd rounder. Both players are fast and versatile. Would you rather have the highly productive former Stanford Cardinal, who is a more traditional skilled wide receiver, or the leadership, special teams play and connection with Dwayne Haskins that Terry McLaurin offers the Redskins?
Trade #4 - Montae Nicholson for Rodney McLeod

This is a straight up swap of free safeties. McLeod is 29 years old, entering his 8th year in the NFL, and under contract for one year, $8m. Nicholson is a 23-year-old 3rd year player who has been a bit inconsistent. As a 4th round draft pick, his cap hits for the remainder of his contract (‘19 and ‘20) average about $840K per year.
