Jay Gruden held a phone conference with Redskins reporters yesterday, and Giants reportes today. He also held a presser after today’s walkthrough that replaced the traditional Wednesday practice due to the short week following Monday Night Football. Case Keenum is dealing with a foot injury, and Colt McCoy is slated to return to practice today. Gruden said that right now Dwayne Haskins Jr. is the backup, and he hasn’t seen McCoy throw a ball in over a month. Keenum is expected to be ready for Sunday’s game against the Giants, but that could change during the week.
Conference call with Redskins reporters
Coaching for his job:
Jay Gruden on a conference call. He says he doesn't feel like he's coaching for his job week-to-week now, but he adds, "who knows?"
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) September 24, 2019
No coaching staff changes:
Gruden is not making any changes to his coaching staff either.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) September 24, 2019
Gruden says he will not remove any assistants. Feels the team will be able to turn things around.
— Les Carpenter (@Lescarpenter) September 24, 2019
Defense underachieved:
Gruden emphasizing that they've played only three games. They're young. They'll get better.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) September 24, 2019
"Defensively we've underachieved, but I still think they'll come together."
Rejects the idea of making mid-season changes on the staff.
Going to get better:
Redskins coach Jay Gruden says he doesn't feel like his job status is week to week and isn't making any changes to his coaching staff. "We played three games against three playoff teams and we haven’t played our best ball yet. I anticipate we’re going to get better."
— Stephen Whyno (@SWhyno) September 24, 2019
Josh Norman:
Gruden says he's a little bit surprised how much teams are going after Josh Norman
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 24, 2019
Jordan Reed:
Gruden says Jordan Reed has seen multiple specialists, but he doesn't feel like he's never going to play again. They want to get him healthy and in a good state of mind and then they'll go from there.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) September 24, 2019
Gruden said Jordan Reed has seen multiple specialists. Trying to see how they can help; want to make him comfortable for if/when he returns. Reed was in the locker room after the game last night
— John Keim (@john_keim) September 24, 2019
Colt McCoy:
Sounds like Colt McCoy could join practice this week, but still a ways off from playing, per Gruden.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) September 24, 2019
Colt McCoy should do some individual drills this week. Gonna have to see a lot for him to work his way back in the lineup. He's gotta show he can push off the leg and deliver consistently.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) September 24, 2019
Gruden dos not sound ready to play Dwayne Haskins at this time, even talked bout the possibility that Colt McCoy could become the starter when he gets healthy -- McCoy is supposed to start practicing again this week, but is not likely for Sunday.
— Les Carpenter (@Lescarpenter) September 24, 2019
Case Keenum:
Gruden on the QB Sneak:
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) September 24, 2019
"We've never preached jumping over the pile."
Essentially says that's what you get for trying that. Clearly disappointed in his decision making.
Gruden remains confident in Case Keenum - "he's done some good things" even though Monday night's turnovers were unacceptable
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 24, 2019
Jay Gruden on Case Keenum: "He's done some good things. He's No. 2 in pass completions, No. 4 in passing yards, he's tied for fourth in touchdowns and he's ninth in passer rating." Says Keenum deserves chance to turn Redskins season around.
— Stephen Whyno (@SWhyno) September 24, 2019
Turn the season around:
He adds that if Haskins gives them the best chance to win, they'll play him. If it's Colt, they'll play him. Right now they feel like it's Case Keenum, so they're playing him. https://t.co/Wzuuj00syc
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) September 24, 2019
Gruden asked if the locker room is still as confident as he is: Hope so, better be.
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) September 24, 2019
Dwayne Haskins Jr.:
Gruden on Haskins. Basically... Not many/any reps with the 1s largely because he's the backup. He understands folks think at 0-3 the season is done, but he doesn't and they believe Keenum is the best option. If Haskins becomes that best option, they'd go that way.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) September 24, 2019
3rd down defense:
Gruden's biggest surprise this year: 3rd down defense. (league-worst 63 percent) #Redskins
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) September 24, 2019
Brandon Scherff:
Gruden called G Brandon Scherff day to day with an ankle sprain. #Redskins
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) September 24, 2019
Conference call with Giants reporters
Dwayne Haskins:
Redskins coach Jay Gruden's tone on rookie QB Dwayne Haskins certainly sounded different during a conference call with the Giants media. Gruden said Haskins is "not far away" and "he'll get his chance".

QB snaps:
Redskins coach Jay Gruden says Colt McCoy and Dwayne Haskins split snaps in walkthrough today with Case Keenum out. Still no clarity on who will start or even back up Sunday at Giants.
— Stephen Whyno (@SWhyno) September 25, 2019
Gruden says Dwayne Haskins is the backup right now. Colt McCoy will practice tomorrow but Gruden says he hasn’t seen him throw a ball in about a month
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 25, 2019
Case Keenum:
Gruden at the podium. On Keenum: “We thought it was important to keep him off his feet today.”
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) September 25, 2019
Gruden says he assumes Case will be able to play. If he can’t, Dwayne Haskins is the backup. Though Colt McCoy participated in the walkthrough today, he did not throw
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) September 25, 2019
Gruden unsure if Keenum will practice tomorrow. If he does, good to go. If not, Colt and Haskins get the reps.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 25, 2019
Keenum underwent an MRI for his foot
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) September 25, 2019
Colt McCoy:
Gruden says McCoy is unlikely to be ready, but there’s a chance he is ready and could supplant Haskins as the backup.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) September 25, 2019
Jay is being very coy with every aspect of this. Lots of “could happen” or “maybe” or “we’ll see.”
This was always the target date following Colt McCoy’s recent meeting with Dr. Robert Anderson. Today was a walk-through. But McCoy is back. https://t.co/FUvmRknNkv
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 25, 2019
QB decisions:
Gruden: “We got a ways to go before I make any crazy decisions.”
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 25, 2019
Dwayne Haskins Jr.:
Jay Gruden said he assumes Keenum will play. Will know more Thursday. As of now Haskins would be next man up— but that depends on where McCoy is with his leg and their confidence in Haskins and their game plan.
— John Keim (@john_keim) September 25, 2019
Gruden on Dwayne Haskins - “He better be prepared to play. That’s the role of the backup.”
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 25, 2019
Chase Roullier/Brandon Scherff injuries:
Gruden hoping that “at least one” of Scherff and/or Roullier can play Sunday. Losing either is a big deal.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 25, 2019
Brandon Scherff walked out of the locker room with a boot in hand. He was walking around sans it on his ankle, however
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) September 25, 2019
Daniel Jones:
Gruden says playing mobile qb like Wentz, Dak and Trubisky will help prepare for Jones , who can move around
— George Wallace (@GWallaceWTOP) September 25, 2019
0-3 start:
Gruden: “Tougher things have been done in the world than coming back from an 0-3 start.”
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) September 25, 2019
