Jay Gruden spoke to the media before this mornings practice. He gave several injury updates on Montez Sweat, Caleb Brantley, and Adonis Alexander. Gruden also talked about setting the teams depth chart, and how he will handle the 3 QB competition during the preseason games.

Jay Gruden at the podium. On Derrius Guice: "He feels good, he looks good. ... I think he's showing flashes being good in all phases. ... I've been impressed with him."
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 4, 2019
Gruden time. Starts with a Derrius Guice question. Says he likes what he's seeing from the RB as a runner and receiver. Cutting looks good following the knee injury. Won't see the power display until game day.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 4, 2019
Gruden on Derrius Guice: increasing the work load on a daily basis... Says he "feels good, looks good." Liked that one day last week caught a rail route and ran 80 yards; next play 50 yards outside zone; next play blitz pickup. Right now hard to see the power; will see in games.

Josh Doctson:
On Doctson. Gruden says Doctson doing some good things. Says he'll never be a receiver that creates separation, but can win the 50-50 balls.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 4, 2019
“For sure, for sure. Josh does some good things. He’s obviously a big receiver with great leaping ability. He’s never going to be a guy that gets incredible separation. He’s going to be a guy that’s going to have to make contested catches from time-to-time and he can do that. We’ve just got to give him some opportunities. We have a positive outlook for Josh as we do for all the receivers; Terry’s [McLaurin] come in and done a great job, [Kelvin] Harmon’s doing a great job, Paul’s [Richardson] starting to slowly get back into the flow, starting to feel a little bit more healthy. So yeah, Cam Sims – of course – [Brian] Quick had a big catch yesterday. I like all the receivers; Rob Davis has come in and done some good things.”
Preseason game vs Browns:
Gruden on 1st preseason game : "We're still in training camp mode, nothing changes." No real game plan for the #Browns.
— George Wallace (@GWallaceWTOP) August 4, 2019
Caleb Brantley:
Caleb Brantley suffered an injured foot yesterday. Gruden called it a mild lisfranc. #Redskins
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) August 4, 2019
Brantley has a foot injury. No torn ligaments. "Mild" lisfranc.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) August 4, 2019
I'm not sure what that means as lisfranc can be pretty serious. Gruden says they hope it's not serious.
Montez Sweat (calf) is also not practicing today.
We shouldn't sleep on the Brantley injury. Gruden called it mild Lisfranc. That's dicey.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) August 4, 2019
Brantley is the clear 5th DL. Not an obvious 6th though I have Wicker in the 53rd man mix. https://t.co/So32uAyk9h
Montez Sweat:
Gruden: Montez Sweat (lower leg) won't practice today. #Redskins
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) August 4, 2019
Jay Gruden said Montez Sweat will not practice again today. When Sweat was first kicked his leg and left practice a few days ago, it was shrugged off as nothing serious.
— Les Carpenter (@Lescarpenter) August 4, 2019
Gruden said he and the coaching staff are hoping that Montez Sweat will be able to suit up and play in the team's game against Cleveland. They're going to err on the side of caution, if necessary. Adonis Alexander has a quad injury that'll hold him out a few weeks #HTTR

Punt returner:
Gruden on what he's looking for at punt returner: "Catch the ball." Quinn right now is the guy
— George Wallace (@GWallaceWTOP) August 4, 2019
“I want our guy to catch the ball. Just catch the ball. Fair catch it if you have to. Just catch it. Trey [Quinn] has really got great hands back there. He’s very dependable as far as catching the ball. [Greg] Stroman has done it before. We’re looking at a couple other guys, so it’s a work in progress. We just have to find another one other than Trey. Right now, Trey would be the starter but Stroman’s done it, like I said, so we’ve got a couple other guys we’re looking at.”
Wide receiver rotation:
Gruden said he would like to get a receiver rotation set "soon."
— Les Carpenter (@Lescarpenter) August 4, 2019
The starters at QB, LT, G, WR will start to become a clearer picture around the third preseason game. #HTTR
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 4, 2019
Jordan Brailford:
The hope is that Jordan Brailford is good to go for Cleveland, but right now he's at about 75 percent and he's getting reps on a limited basis, Gruden said. Next week is when the coaches are eyeballing him for work with no limitations #HTTR
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) August 4, 2019
Quarterbacks:
Gruden on QBs: "Colt has the most experience, but hasn't played a whole lot. He's never worked w/starting team a whole lot. We have to get him more reps. Case has the reps but not experience in system & Dwayne's a rookie. All shown flashes; all flashes of we have to get better."
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 4, 2019
Gruden hasn't decided on a QB rotation for preseason games, but he would break the games up where all three don't play each game. Two would probably play, one sits that game. #Redskins
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) August 4, 2019
Adonis Alexander:
Gruden: Adonis Alexander has a quad injury and will be out a couple of weeks.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) August 4, 2019
Reality: If he's a Redskin beyond training camp, it's because he's on IR. That experiment is ending.
