Who Will be the Redskins Biggest Surprise Roster Cut?

NFL: Washington Redskins at Jacksonville Jaguars Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Every year we try to guess the Redskins 53-man Roster. Every year, there are a surprise or two that throws us off. I don’t expect this year to be any different than the others in terms of a surprise roster cut or two, so it should be just as fun predicting who that surprise roster cut will be as it will be predicting who makes the 53.

Below are some possible cut candidates and reasons why they may be cut.

Colt McCoy - Despite being listed as the starter on the Redskins pseudo depth chart for the preseason, McCoy is coming off multiple surgeries to fix the broken leg he suffered last season, and he’s yet to show he’s recovered. If Jay decides to keep just two quarterbacks, it’s looking like Case Keenum could be the guy to start the season with Dwayne Haskins waiting in the wings, leaving Colt as the odd man out.

Samaje Perine - Gruden has hyped up Perine this summer, but the former 2017 fourth round pick will have to stand out in a crowded backfield to make the 53-man roster. He’s not a third down specialist, and the staff may want someone who can step in if Chris Thompson needs a break or gets dinged up. Perine is not that guy. He has similar traits to Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice - both who are roster locks.

Josh Doctson - Hear me out here...Doctson has been a massive disappointment as a former first round pick. Dwayne Haskins is the future at quarterback, and it’s very important that a young quarterback builds rapport with his receivers. Doctson likely won’t be around past this season, and there are some young, intriguing options among the Redskins receiving corps that just may be better long-term choices to keep around.

Now, maybe Doctson isn’t outright cut, instead being traded for a bag of chips and some worn gym socks. Either way, there is at least a chance he’s not on the roster come September.

Troy Apke - Let’s just call a spade a spade - Troy Apke may be a good athlete, but he’s just not a very good football player. He was WAY over-drafted due mainly to his combine numbers, but his play on the field, however limited that may have been to this point, is simply underwhelming. There is a chance he’s passed on the depth chart by Jeremy Reaves, and if the Redskins keep just four safeties, they may try and stash Apke on the practice squad to see if he develops.
