This series will involve scouting - electronically - the 90 man rosters of the other 31 teams in the league for players who might get left behind at final cut downs, and who could potentially provide value as the 52nd or 53rd man on the Redskins’ roster.
This edition takes a look at the AFC East, home of the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins.
New England Patriots
Gunner Olszewski (WR) - A UDFA slot receiver with sneaky speed as a return man. Could potentially end up on their PS.
Jakobi Meyers (WR) - This UDFA out of NC State was one of Kelvin Harmon’s teammates and has been lighting it up in Pats’ training camp. He may make the team, but if he doesn’t, he may be worth a look.
Byron Cowart (DT) - A 5th round draft pick out of UMD, Cowart is on the bubble, but has been showing well in pre-season. If he’s relegated to the PS, he could be considered for additional Redskins defensive line depth.
New York Jets
Greg Dortch (WR) - This UDFA out of Wake Forest could be the PR/WR the Redskins are looking for. He comps to — guess who? — Jamison Crowder.
Frankie Luvu (LB) - Luvu was a 2018 UDFA from Washington State picked up by the Jets last season. He’s apparently a tackling monster. Could be a special teams addition.
On another note, the Jets are absolutely desperate for cornerbacks. If we have a decent one at risk of not making the 53 man roster, it could be worth reaching out to them for a trade.
Buffalo Bills
Christian Wade (RB) - This former English rugby player made a splash in the Bills first pre-season game, taking a 65-yard run to the house.
Tyrel Dodson (LB) - Another potential special teamer, this UDFA out of Texas A&M has an affinity for tackling.
Darryl Johnson (DE) - This 7th rounder out of North Carolina A&T appears poised to make the team this year, but there’s a possibility he doesn’t, and he appears to be similar to a Casanova McKinzey type.
Miami Dolphins
Preston Williams (WR) - Projected by some as an early 4th rounder, Williams is a UDFA out of Colorado State who made a huge splash against the Falcons in the first pre-season game. He looks likely to make this talent-starved Dolphins team, but he’s not a lock.
Myles Gaskin (RB) - This 7th round pick out of Washington has shown some promise in the preseason and could potentially be someone to keep an eye on.
Overall, the Dolphins are so bereft of talent across the board, it’s unlikely that many (any?) players with any talent fail to make the roster.
