Jay Gruden answered questions before the start of Day 5 of training camp practices this morning. Geron Christian and Chase Roullier should return to practice today, but will still be limited as they teturn from offseason surgeries. No update on Trent Williams holdout.

Jay Gruden to the podium for Day 5 of training camp:— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 30, 2019
Says all three quarterbacks were really good on Sunday. Not a banner day for the defense, but that's how that works.
Says Haskins did a nice job.
Gruden on Cam Sims - He’s doing a great job. Making big plays.— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) July 30, 2019
Jay Gruden on receiver Cam Sims: "He's got his legs under him... had a great camp so far."— Les Carpenter (@Lescarpenter) July 30, 2019
On WR Cam Sims Gruden says he’s primarily playing the “1” position... says Sims has “long arms and is physical,” allowing him to go downfield which Gruden mentioned is very important for a receiver of his stature.— Ryan Fowler (@FowlerRyan1) July 30, 2019
Gruden says that Tim Settle will play a lot. Same for Caleb Brantley. He says the best d-lines have a great rotation, so it'll have to be more than Allen, Ioannidis and Payne.— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 30, 2019
Jay Gruden says Tim Settle is a lot stronger than he was at this time last year. One key: Payne, Ioannidis and Allen. Gruden said Settle had to "follow suit with those three guys or... you won't last long." Me: Settle has looked very good.— John Keim (@john_keim) July 30, 2019
Finished up his answer to "why not?" with "Ask Bruce."— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 30, 2019
Would love to. https://t.co/sj0WpFLho9
Gruden said they’ve got to do a better job giving Doctson more chances to make plays on 50-50 balls and in the red zone. #SkinsCamp— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) July 30, 2019
"He has very seldom been the first progression in a lot of these plays." Sometimes when teams have played man-to-man Josh Doctson has been the second or third progression, and that may change this season Jay Gruden said. #HTTR— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) July 30, 2019
Gruden says Moreland's done a good job, playing both inside and outside.— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 30, 2019
Versatility is huge and he's showing he's got that every day. Says he was well coached at @JMUFootball, too.
"He’s done a good job. He’s played outside and inside; versatility is huge for the nickel/cornerback position. [Greg] Stroman’s doing the same thing, Fabian [Moreau] is doing the same thing, so it’s critical for them to learn both. Coming from JMU, he was well coached out there, he plays with great ball skills; we’ve mentioned that before and seen it already. But he’s just got to continue to work and get better, which he is.”
Asked Gruden if there was a Trent Williams update : “No. If there was, I’ll tell you.”— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) July 30, 2019
Gruden on Trent Williams's absence: "'I've just got to let it play out."— Les Carpenter (@Lescarpenter) July 30, 2019
Geron Christian Sr.:
Geron Christian will get team work today— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) July 30, 2019
Gruden says Geron Christian will work in today. Will probably be on a pitch count, but he's going to be in team work.— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 30, 2019
Challenging pass interference calls:
"Wow that is a good one, we’re going to have to have (Senior Assistant) Coach [Matt] Cavanaugh on the box watching very closely just for PIs, ya know and obviously other challenges that already are part of the game so it’s going to be a very stressful deal for us. It’s got to be obviously blatant for them to overturn a call or put a flag on a field. But, it’s something we’ve got to watch out for, these plays are huge and then you have to decide what play is big enough to challenge where you don’t want to waste a challenge, maybe on a 12 yard gain. But if it’s a 12 yard gain on 3rd down and 8, maybe you do if it keeps the drive going, it’s going to be something we have to discuss, when and how to use them. You also don’t want to be stuck with three time outs and three challenge flags at the end of the game and not use them, so it’s going to be an interesting dilemma for a lot of coaches – for all coaches.”
Gruden says Chase Roullier should be back today at practice in a limited basis— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) July 30, 2019
"Yeah, speed, size, length; we’ve already talked about that. Now we’re just trying to hone in on – if [we’re] playing base defense, one of those guys (outside linebackers) sometimes has got to drop into coverage – so we’re working on his drops and his aiming points and all that. But from a pass-rush standpoint, obviously he will be a problem for a lot of people; even if he doesn’t get home, you’ll feel his presence because he’s so long and he’s always around the quarterback – he can make the quarterback step up into [Daron] Payne and [Jonathan] Allen, hopefully [Matt] Ioannidis and those other guys. So [we have] two great edge setters. Ryan Anderson is doing a much better job in camp; [Marcus] Smith [II] is doing a better job, talked about Cassanova McKinzy – he’s doing a good job too. I’ve got a good group of edge guys.”
