Jay Gruden spoke to the media before the first day of practices started for the Washington Redskins 2019 Training Camp in Richmond, VA. There are no updates on Trent Williams holdout, so Ereck Flowers will be starting the rotation at LT. Expect to hear a lot of praise for the OLBs today.
Geron Christian Sr. is at practice, but not suited up even though he was cleared to resume practice yesterday. Starting center Chase Roullier is also in street clothes on the first day of practice, and is reportedly dealing with a hamstring injury.
Gruden talked about three players on offense. He mentioned Dwayne Haskins' poise, and talked about the QB competition. He wants to see Derrius Guice back on the field, and playing in the preseason. Cam Sims got his annual Gruden hype/praise.

Day 1 - Jay Gruden to the podium
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 25, 2019
He says Haskins has great poise as a young player. He says he showed that at Ohio State and showed it again in OTA's.
"He doesn't let one play affect the next play. That's very, very important."
QB Competition:
Redskins coach Jay Gruden said it will be a challenge to get all three quarterbacks enough reps as they compete for the job. With rookie Dwayne Haskins, one thing he already likes is his poise.https://t.co/iVIaIt167Q

Cam Sims:
Gruden on WR Cam Sims: Big, strong, physical.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) July 25, 2019
"He has a skillset that coaches look for."
And now Jay Gruden is talking about Cam Sims - says he has all the attributes you want in a WR - just needs to put it together
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) July 25, 2019
Gruden said Cam Sims has "the skillset coaches live for." If healthy, I think he may be the leading receiver this season.

Derrius Guice:
Gruden says he wants to see Derrius Guice play in preseason, “we have to.” Gruden again complimenting Samaje Perine for his offseason work

Gruden on Derrius Guice: "He needs to work. ... We do have to keep an eye on him." Gruden would like to see Guice put in preseason games.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) July 25, 2019
Gruden says there's a fine line between babying guys and maintenance on guys coming back from injury.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 25, 2019
For Guice specifically - he needs reps. Jay wants to see him play and that applies to preseason, too. They want him to get experience and learn.
Gruden on Guice - “I see no reason he won’t get back to where he was as a sophomore in college”
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) July 25, 2019
Gruden on Guice: "Our goal is to get him ready for week 1."
— George Wallace (@GWallaceWTOP) July 25, 2019
Gruden said something RB Derrius Guice showed in last year's training camp that he didn't show at LSU was his ability to catch the ball.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) July 25, 2019
And now that Guice is healthy, Gruden is excited to see how he develops as a pass-catcher.
Montez Sweat:
Guice says Montez Sweat has already shown that he was worth trading up for.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) July 25, 2019
Trent Williams:
Gruden: There's no update on Trent Williams.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 25, 2019
Ereck Flowers:
The Redskins will start Ereck Flowers at tackle to begin camp, which will allow Wes Martin to play guard.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) July 25, 2019
BTW, after watching OTAs, Flowers would be a disaster at LT.
— Rick Snider (@Snide_Remarks) July 25, 2019
OL Continuity:
Gruden said having continuity along the offensive line will be one of the main points of emphasis to start #SkinsCamp.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) July 25, 2019
"We need the offensive line to step up and find the right guys."
