Could Josh Doctson, the former TCU first round bust, fetch the Redskins some draft capital in a trade? It’s hard to say, but you never know without asking...right?
If reports are true, the Redskins will look to upgrade the wide receiving corps this spring in the NFL draft. Depending on if and how they acquire a new signal caller, that upgrade could come in the earlier rounds.
Doctson, who is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, missed all but two games of his rookie season due to injury. The last two seasons, both of which fans thought he may break out, he’s had a combined 79 receptions for 1034 yards and eight touchdowns.
For a guy once considered to be a legitimate deep threat due to his leaping ability and prowess to high-point the football, Doctson has struggled to get open down the field do to his lack of true deep speed, suddenness and route running. He does better underneath against a soft zone, but has shown zero ability to produce yardage after the catch - something the Redskins desperately need, and his lack of physicality against corners is alarming.
If another teams believes they can maximize Doctson’s skill-set in their offense, it may behoove the Redskins to at least engage in trade talks and see if a team may be willing to give up a pick for the struggling receiver. Doctson still has his 5th year option, which would need to be picked up by his new team in early May.
Sometimes a change of scenery may do a player some good.
