Club Jay is over and Bill Callahan has taken over the Redskins and their practices. Callahan is more old-school and disciplined that Jay Gruden, and that shows already in his first practice as Redskins interim Head Coach. The music was turned off after stretches. Team captains were put up front. Referees were present for one of the team’s most penalized teams. The team ran sideline-to-sideline sprints after practice. The practices under Jay Gruden got a lot of scrutiny while he was here, and right after he was fired. Bill Callahan is running his practices a little differently.
After the end of today’s Redskins practice, interim coach Bill Callahan put 10 minutes on the clock as a “developmental period” for each position group to use to work with the backup/younger players.

Coming out at the conclusion of practice, the team is running gassers. Haven’t seen that before. Gruden had defensive and offensive line run gassers after the three fights in Richmond, but that’s the last we’ve seen of it.

As we walk down to the presser, the Redskins are running sprints the width of the field. That’s something we haven’t seen before during the season (happened in camp).

So, small tweaks noticed from the first Callahan practice: During stretches, the captains were in front facing the team, the entire team huddled up after breaking stretches, the offense and defense did a full unit (separately) period after stretches, couple college refs present.

Ross Pierschbacher, Wes Martin, Bryce Love and Danny Johnson were on the rehab field.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) October 9, 2019
OL Wes Martin, the starting RG the past two weeks, is working on the side field along with C/G Ross Pierschbacher.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) October 9, 2019
Good news is Brandon Scherff is with the OL during position drills.
Donald Penn just walked out to practice. No helmet but walking fine.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) October 9, 2019
Adding to this: As we walked off the field, Foster was going through exercises where he slowly carried the sled a few yards. Think Alvin Kamara but without the Jeep and literal baby steps. LB slowly, but surely, making progress following his ACL tear this May.
— Rhiannon Walker (@InstantRHIplay) October 9, 2019
After this, they broke into their usual individual drills. Callahan working with the OL as usual. O’Connell is with the QB’s as usual.

Definitely a little faster pace to today’s practice compared to in the past. Also no music playing during individual drills. #Redskins

Music over. This was different. Usually just the running backs working on ball security. pic.twitter.com/eJyeA38PCi

Well, this is new. #Redskins

New today: captains stretching in front of rest of team, brief team huddle before start of practice. #CampCallahan pic.twitter.com/gRyMNCbipA
— Stephen Whyno (@SWhyno) October 9, 2019
Correction! Vernon Davis is back in stretch. We’ll see how much he does. Looks to be outside of the first drill.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) October 9, 2019
Team also huddles up before breaking out. Different drills and different groupings in the first period. Ball carriers working on security. pic.twitter.com/K0xwqJ6Sw4
Music ends after stretching.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) October 9, 2019
Captains in front during stretch. That’s news. Exercise bikes next to the field too. Looks like individual drills are gonna go differently too. Definitely different. pic.twitter.com/AtywmiXKLL

So this is new. Stretching with what I assume are captains facing the rest of the team. Allen, Kerrigan, Collins, Everett, Scherff and Keenum. pic.twitter.com/wnHmVW2h3e

Roll call.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) October 9, 2019
Three quarterbacks and zero walking boots.
Vernon Davis present. No Jordan Reed.
Brandon Scherff stretching.
Brandon Scherff (ankle) and Vernon David (concussion) are back in uniform for today’s practice.
— Kyle Stackpole (@kylefstackpole) October 9, 2019
Rookie OL Wes Martin and Ross Pierschbacher are stretching alongside the team in street clothes. #Redskins
First Camp Callahan Redskins practice. Music still playing for stretches, players not in full pads. But some officials are here and expect it to be a long one. pic.twitter.com/dskmQfW16Y

Two college refs out here helping during practice. First time I’ve seen that during the season. Penalties obviously an issue for the Skins. pic.twitter.com/wCSPUXpsMi

I'll also say this before folks get too excited about the new disciplined approach - Callahan's O-Line unit is among the most penalized in the NFL. Not entirely on him, but certainly some of it is.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) October 9, 2019
Media will get to watch a few minutes of practice at 1pm. I’m curious if things look noticeably different to us. I’m guessing they will. Also very curious about music being played. Callahan openly hated that before.
