UPDATE: Woods still expected to visit Redskins
After interviewing in Arizona yesterday, former Broncos D-coordinator Joe Woods will likely visit Jax, Washington and possibly one other team before making decision midweek. All interested in him as DB or DB+. #9sports— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) January 12, 2019
Jay Gruden has been told he's the Redskins Head Coach for 2019, but there have been rumblings about changes on his staff for weeks. Defensive Coordinator Greg Manusky has been the guy most people have pegged as the sacrificial lamb this year. Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan is another coach who could be leaving/getting replaced.
Mike Klis is reporting this morning that the Redskins have shown interest in Denver Broncos DC Joe Woods to become their new Defensive Backs Coach. That position has been held by Torrian Gray for the last two seasons, but he has reportedly been let go. Gray was highly touted when he came to the Redskins in 2017, but there have been communication(and other) problems in the secondary.
The Broncos are reportedly holding on to their assistant coaches until John Elway hires a new HC to replace the recently fired Vance Joseph. If the new Head Coach hires his own DC, Woods will be available for the newly vacated DB coaching job.
Broncos DC Joe Woods has received interest as DB coach from Jacksonville and Washington, per sources, but again Elway hanging on to his asst coaches for new HC to evaluate. Woods could stay even he may not have defensive play calling responsibility. #9sports— Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) January 8, 2019
I believe he's already been let go— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) January 8, 2019
Might still be TBD. There’s another piece to this I’ve been told but waiting to see how it fits before I report.— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) January 8, 2019
Manusky is here for now, but that could change very quickly. Former Jets HC Todd Bowles was a name connected to the Redskins as a possible new DC. He is also reportedly the top choice to join Bruce Arians with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Former #Jets coach Todd Bowles met with the #Redskins earlier this week, sources say. No specific role was discussed, I’m told. It was more about touching base and seeing where things stood for both sides. As @RapSheet has noted, Bowles is in play in Tampa for Arians’ DC.— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) January 8, 2019
