Redskins players and coaches held the second day of training camp in Richmond, VA yesterday. Day 3 of practices starts today at 9:45am.
Jay Gruden held another presser and let the world know that Joshua Holsey "severed" his toe. We're still waiting on confirmation/clarification on that one. Zach Brown returned to practice after straining his quad on the first day of practice.
Daron Payne gave everyone a scare when he collided with Brandon Scherff. Bruce Allen hovered over him while he was down, but the big man said he was ok despite injuring his ankle. Ryan Anderson left the field with the help of trainers due to back spasms that sidelined him for the rest of the day. Rob Kelley also ended practice early due to heat-related symptoms. Both are day-to-day.
The pads go on today in front of the first weekend crowd of camp this year.
UVA’s Quin Blanding is certainly trying to soak up every moment he can w/JNo. Was expected to be drafted as high as the 3rd, but VERY subpar testing at the combine dropped him out of the draft entirely. None of the UVA defenders tested well. Not prepared adequately by staff there?

Smith & McCoy just beat Hogan & QB coach Kevin O’Connell at a relay-race:sprint to the 25, hit the crossbar, sprint back to the endzone x2. McCoy only needed two throws, Smith made it interesting. Big hug and celebration between 11 & 12 after the W. #Redskins #unfairteams

Apparently, Orlando Scandrick actually had a scheduled veterans day off. No back spasms. That's just Ryan Anderson. Who's real first name is Orlando. That caused some confusion somewhere, I suppose. #Redskins

Rookie report: Safety Troy Apke, a fourth-round pick, broke up a couple passes playing deep middle, working with the No. 2 defense. Apke's primary role will be special teams this season. On the two plays, he did a good job staying in the middle. It's... https://t.co/wPUueAaCRp

After one catch on a crossing route by Josh Doctson, QB Alex Smith walked over to him and told him, "Great catch. Great catch." Then they chatted for a couple minutes. Later, Doctson said of Smith: "After every pass... he'll come to me or he'll come to... https://t.co/f19GUEIcf0

Fabian Moreau took a lot of the work at nickelback today with Dunbar and Norman on the outside. #Redskins https://t.co/LqjVQJwZmb

Driver of the Danny Johnson bandwagon weighs in. Sleeper pick has been noted for #Redskins rookie cornerback. Who is your camp sleeper? https://t.co/qX6zX9OMm3

Receiver Josh Doctson played down the MRI he had right before training camp. "Nah, it was nothing...Just tuning things up, man. Every car gets an oil change so you've just got to change things." Doctson missed 14 games two years ago with Achilles'... https://t.co/92Ddlf5qqU

One thing’s clear about Alex Smith...he’s not worried about letting it fly in practice. He’s not as...’process oriented’...as KC. Players on both sides love it. Deep throw here is broken up, but why throw underneath all day in practice? Know 8 drove Jay nuts with that. #Redskins pic.twitter.com/6so8wTpYaI
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
Two good reps from DBs- Moreau (who has had a quietly solid camp) breaks up a deep ball to Crowder who got open on a nifty move, and Apke goes step-for-step with Harris to break up, and nearly intercept, a ball in the end zone. #Redskins
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
#Redskins employing almost exclusively single-high S today in 11v11. Think they like both their safeties’ range in the deep middle and versatility close to the line. Last year was much more of the ‘rock’n’roll’ look with both safeties at medium depth/exchanging.
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
Greg Storman has a lot of getting better to do. He holds like CRAZY.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018
They have pads on, but this 11v11 session is soft. No hitting whatsoever and the lineman are playing brother-in-law ball up front. DBs going half speed too. Seems like a glorified walkthrough at this point. #Redskins
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
Jamison Crowder has been a consistent target for Alex Smith so far in camp. The two already have a chemistry and Crowder just made a long catch, beating Montae Nicholson.

Some toe drag swag from @prichiejr #SkinsCamp #HTTR pic.twitter.com/taqGkfqqts
— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) July 28, 2018
Smith just delivered a ridiculous ball in 7-on-7 over the outstretched arm of Moreau to Richardson right underneath Norman. #ToeDragSwag for Richardson.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018
Guice catching a lot of passes from Smith, and I'm not talking about checkdowns.
— Chad Ryan (@ChadwikoRCC) July 28, 2018
He is getting first-read looks in the flats behind blockers.
He is going to get a lot of touches in 2018. #Redskins
Zach Brown (quad strain) is doing a lot more team work today compared to yesterday. He appears to be fine.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) July 28, 2018
Likely just 18s demeanor. Think/have heard from people that know him that he’s just a chill dude & he cares more than his coasting personality demonstrates. Hopefully he produces on the field, a la Marvin Harrison, who was oft criticized early for his lack of emotion. #Redskins https://t.co/Fp2rvBOpfd
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
Gotta think nonchalance is something that drives coaches nuts, but 18 has shown he doesn’t take criticism well in the past. The crowd here is glued to him, telling him to step up. The fans are behind him, and that includes me. Just wish the desire was more apparent. #Redskins
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
Brian Quick just made Stroman fall in 7v7. Turned on the deep dig and McCoy’s pass was on him. Quick looks awesome this camp.
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
Doctson fumbled on the next play, DJ picked it up...Doctson didn’t even attempt to hustle. On of the coaches...‘Little things fellas! Little things!!’
Backs in order of appearance (11-on-11):
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) July 28, 2018
1st team: Guice, Kelley
2nd team: Marshall, Perine, Bibbs
We’re back to first again so no thirds for now. Marshall and Perine were alternating snaps #Redskins
Colt McCoy throws a duck that somehow hits Maurice Harris 20yarda downfield.
— Chad Ryan (@ChadwikoRCC) July 28, 2018
Troy Apke would have destroyed Harris after the catch in live action though. Like, DESTROYED him. #Redskins
Nice run by Byron Marshall who bounced a big gain to the outside. He showed nice vision and speed on the run. #Redskins
— Lake Lewis Jr (@LakeLewis) July 28, 2018
Jon Allen just stood up Lauvao and Christian in an attempted double team. Such strength.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) July 28, 2018
Dunbar opposite Norman in base today. Phil Taylor your starting NT with Payne out.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) July 28, 2018
Guice with a nice grab in 7v7 on a double-move. Natural catcher of the ball and always straight upfield. Alex Smith really ripped it too.
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
McCoy hits Fields twice in a row underneath. Telling you-preseason hero is #16. #Redskins
Guice is your first back in the backfield today for team reps.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) July 28, 2018
Troy Apke has consistently shown two things: 1-he has a LONG way to go in coverage. Bites on PA and double-moves, often out is position deep, BUT 2-his recovery speed is ridiculous. Back on receiver before the catch. If he can get the coverage down... #Redskins

Time for DB v WR 1 on 1s
— Chad Ryan (@ChadwikoRCC) July 28, 2018
Quinn beats Dunbar
Swearinger gets called holding on Crowder
Norman blankets Doctson and forces incompletion
Prince Iworah nice breakup on Crowder
DBs are being VERY physical in this drill - lots of potential pass interference calls.
Not a bad view pic.twitter.com/6UUPCpk1dS
— Kimberley A. Martin (@ByKimberleyA) July 28, 2018
Josh Doctson is decidedly more casual than the rest of the receivers in a lot of these drills. Doesn’t finish after his catches, isn’t planting/cutting hard...I know he’s got that personality type but this is a crucial year and I’d rather him be setting an example. #Redskins
— Kennedy Paynter (@Kennedy_Paynter) July 28, 2018
WRs working on getting low. Crowder dropped one and heard it from the fans...laughed it off. #Redskins pic.twitter.com/PThgHUZDAC
