Derrius Guice Raises Thousands of Dollars for Cancer Fundraiser

NFL: NFL Draft-Red Carpet Arrivals Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Ryan Kerrigan makes a difference for seriously ill, special needs and physically challenged children through his Blitz for the Better Foundation. Nick Sundberg launched Loads of Love with the Redskins Charitable Foundation in order to help efforts to reduce absenteeism by providing kids access to clean clothes. Redskins players have a long history of getting involved in their communities, in both the DMV and their hometowns, and rookie Derrius Guice is quickly joining the ranks as a standout player looking to use his platform for good.

Guice’s latest efforts to positively impact the lives around him have come in the form of a fundraiser for the Mary Bird Perkins Center, a cancer center in the running back’s hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisina. He first encouraged fans to get involved via social media on June 20, and he has since raised more than $17,000 since the fundraiser’s inception.

Not only has Guice volunteered to match the first $1,000 in donations (it appears he’s actually made two $1,000 donations to this fundraiser), but he is putting out major incentives to encourage people to donate, offering a chance to play him on the popular game Fortnite and chances to win a signed/worn LSU cleats, to bowl and hang out with him in Baton Rouge on Friday, June 29, and to win two tickets to the Washington Redskins vs. New Orleans Saints MNF Game on October 8.

On his GoFundMe page, Guice explains his personal connection to the cancer center, where the mission is “to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research and education.” Guice says:

“Cancer is a disease that I am passionate about. It takes so many lives and loved ones each year. One of my best friend’s mother went to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and was able to leave ringing that bell. It is the bell each patient rings when they have beat cancer. I want to continue to have people ring that bell and bring a cure to this disease that has touched almost everyone’s life in some way or the other!

Let’s help cure this cause together!

Geaux Tigers!! #HTTR”

It’s always impressive to see a player put their money and their fame where their mouth is, and Guice is doing both lately, much to the admiration of Redskins fans.
