UDFA G/C Sean Welsh was considered a draftable prospect when he entered the 2018 draft, but he didn't hear his name called in Dallas. The Redskins were able to sign him after the draft ended, and many people instantly called it a steal. Welsh has decided to retire, and leaves the team as this year's rookie class got together today for rookie mini-camp.
Welsh has a well documented history with depression that he has talked about in an effort to bring attention to the issue. “I figured if a big, tough Iowa offensive lineman can come out and talk about his feelings, anybody can,” Welsh said.
In his retirement announcement he talked about being apprehensive about continuing to play football, and that his passion for the game is not there anymore. He thanked the Redskins for the opportunity, but he's moving on from football.
