As draft week draws closer I wanted to put together a relatively short article on how Todd McShay and Mel Kiper are rarely right regarding the Redskins and mock drafts. I have been on HogsHaven for 5 years (which reminds me I need to ask Hunter about planning a Sabbatical) and have seen many mocks. Rarely are they predicted correctly by professionals or amateurs - though I would give the edge to the HogsHaven community and invite you to reflect on your comments from years past (some of you did very well). I wanted to make an article this year and I think there is a good chance many cyber voices around HogsHaven will be silenced in heartbreak and disappointment when Vita Vea and Da’Ron Payne are not selected by the Redskins simply because they have been mocked to the team by McShay and Kiper. This year is somewhat unique in that there have been very few comments calling Kiper and McShay idiots given they have mocked to the fanbase what they crave: Big, athletic, run stoppers. I pose a simple premise and simple question to you - disregard your favorites and predict who the Redskins will actually select in rounds one and two.
The interesting thing is that looking back at some of the other professional mocks from other sites got it spot on. Perhaps draw water from a non-McShay or Kiper well?
To remind ourselves of the difficult nature of mocking let's look back at some mock drafts from years past.
2015
McShay and Kiper’s choices for the Redskins selection at 5th overall:
Shane Ray and Donte Fowler Jr.
Kiper’s choice for the Redskins selection at 38th overall:
T.J. Clemmings (haha) and Cedric Ogbuehi
Actual Picks
Brandon Scherff and Preston Smith
Notes: All of you who voted for Randy Gregory or Shane Ray over Brandon should be ashamed of yourselves.
2016
McShay and Kiper’s choices for the Redskins selection at 21st (which ended up being 22nd) overall:
Karl Joseph, A’Shawn Robinson, Reggie Ragland, Andrew Billings, Ryan Kelly, and Jarran Reed
McShay and Kiper’s choices for the Redskins selection at 53rd overall:
Michael Thomas, Jihad Ward, Robert Nkemdiche
Actual Picks
Josh Doctson and Su’a Cravens
Notes:
Billings would be a fantastic pick for the Redskins this year, but there is a very good chance that he will not be available at #21.
*Snot comes out of nose
