We just saw a hypothetical first round trade back from Mark Tyler. I thought I’d fill in a day in this slow week prior to the draft by tossing out another trade-back scenario.
Setting the scenario
On Path to the Draft this week, they were highlighting Calvin Ridley and asked the question:
Is there any team out there who is looking for a receiver that could “reach” for Ridley?
The answer from the Path to the Draft crew was interesting to me:
- The Cowboys need a receiver, and Ridley would instantly be the best receiver on the team.
- On Path to the Draft, they pointed out that the Cardinals are at 15 and if they don’t go after a quarterback, they could take a receiver.
- Baltimore at 16 needs receiving help desperately.
Daniel Jeremiah’s Mock Draft 3.0, in fact, has Calvin Ridley going to the Cardinals, while the Cowboys take Courtland Sutton at #19.
So, Dallas might not be happy to sit at 19 and hope that Ridley is still on the board when their pick comes around. Dallas has 10 picks in this draft, and can afford to trade up for the player they want.
The Trade
Dallas gets #13 from the Redskins
The Redskins get:
- #19 in the first round
- #81 in the third round
- #116 in the fourth round
- #171 in the fifth round
The Redskins move down 6 spots in the first round, and add 3 extra selections, giving the team a total of 11 picks in this draft, and the ability to possibly trade up in the 2nd or 3rd round to get a player they want.
Post trade, this is what the Redskins draft would look like:
- Round 1 - #19
- Round 2 - #44
- Round 3 - #81
- Round 4 - #109 and #116
- Round 5 - #142, #163 and #171
- Round 6 - #205
- Round 7 - #231 and #241
So, who would likely be on the board at #19 that the Redskins could select?
Moving down 6 spots may change the list of draft targets slightly, and the Redskins may need to consider drafting players we haven’t talked about as much. Here are 16 players who could be available at #19 and meet a Redskin team need. Some of these players would have to fall unexpectedly to still be there, but at least 4 or 5 of these players should be available. Click on the player’s name to see his Hogs Haven draft profile.

Yeah, I’d do it, but the Cowboys won’t. This is just stupid for them.

This would be a bad trade down for the Redskins.
