Some Impact Free Agent Targets for the Redskins

NFL: Green Bay Packers at Carolina Panthers Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

When free agency opens on March 14th, the Redskins will need to be active if they expect to compete in the NFC East in 2018. Just last year, the Philadelphia Eagles were major player in free agency signing Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Nick Foles, and Chance Warmack. They also traded for Ronald Darby and Jay Ajayi. Look where that got them. On the starting roster for the Super Bowl, 12 starting players from Philly came from other teams either as free agents or via trade.

The Redskins need upgrades all over the roster. They should enter free agency with roughly $35 million in cap space after the recent contracts of Quinton Dunbar, Mason Foster, and Alex Smith are counted. They will need to put aside roughly $5 million for rookies. They may look to re-structure Jordan Reed's contract that will pay him $10 million in 2018. Still, they should have around $30 million to spend on re-signing their own key pending free agents and in open free agency.

Aside from Zach Brown and maybe one of either Trent Murphy or Junior Galette, I don’t see any must-sign free agents for the Redskins. They could look to retain Bashaud Breeland, Spencer Long and Ryan Grant, but may be fine letting these players test the market.
