Player Overview
Tre’Quan Smith played a pivotal role in helping Central Florida go undefeated this year. Smith posted career numbers as he was a key part of the Knights passing attack. Smith can stretch the field and has made his fair share of circus catches this season. His big-play ability will no doubt entice teams looking for a value at the position in the mid-rounds. For all of Smith spectacular plays he does have a case of the dropsies every now and then and his hands are a big part of why he isn't projected to go higher. Smith has been working on refining his technique specifically his route running and had a good showing this past week at the Senior Bowl. One thing that impressed me while watching him is his body control and willingness to attack the ball. I was also impressed with his blocking ability down the field. Smith could develop into a nice deep threat but he will have to clean up his fundamentals.
Strengths
- Arms are long which gives him an impressive catch radius. Good athlete who can go up and get it.
- Interested in YAC and is looking to gain all the extra yards he can after the catch.
- Dangerous on deep routes on the boundary and over the middle. Uses his body to create a barrier between the ball and defender.
- Interested and enthusiastic blocker. Will block to the whistle for his teammates.
Weaknesses
- Drops are an issue and he must get more consistent in this area.
- Just average size at the position - despite his spectacular grabs I would hesitate to call him a red zone threat.
- Route running needs to crispen up but reports are that he has improved it since the end of the season.
- Doesn’t really explode off the line straight line speed is a gradual build up rather than an immediate one - 40 time will be near paramount for him.
Let’s see his work:
Central Florida WR Tre'Quan Smith (#4) tracks the ball extremely well here for the contested catch deep downfield against UConn (11/11/17); finished with 7 catches for 120 yards (17.1 avg.) and 1 TD in 49-24 win. #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/Djuoomzqkp

#UCF WR Tre’Quan Smith has longer arms (34 1/2”) than several OT prospects here. Longest arms among WRs.#IowaState WR Allen Lazard has the largest hands (9 7/8”) among this WR group.

How He Would Fit On The Redskins
The Redskins need another receiver who can legitimately stretch the field and present a deep threat to the defense. Smith has the potential to fit that bill. I really like him as a mid-round developmental receiver who has enough upside to eventually take over WR2 duties on the team. Some of his catches are spectacular and he offers a legit playmaking ability. I will admit though his test time is going to sink or swim so to speak his draft projection. On tape, Smith looks plenty fast to me but I will concede he is not a player with exceptional get off at the LOS. How he gets off jams and his top speed will help determine his role on his next team and we simply don't have the official results yet. It is also very important because he is definitely not the most natural hands catcher. Nevertheless, with a good environment and coaches, I can see Smith’s potential. Immediately he can come in and contribute on special teams as a coverage guy (potentially a gunner?) since it looks like he likes to get his hands on defenders. Things are getting interesting in Washington - why am I writing these again?
