The Redskins made their first major post-season roster move yesterday, signing CB Quinton Dunbar to a 3-year contract extension. Dunbar would have been a restricted free agent after entering the league as an UDFA WR, and then being converted to CB by the Redskins. He has spent his first 3 years in the league as a backup CB, and a spot starter. Dunbar’s new deal is worth $10.5 million with a $3 million signing bonus, and $5.25 million guaranteed per John Keim. His deal last year earned him $615,000, he has now earned a pay raise and a little bit of job security.
The move is not a good sign for Bashaud Breeland’s future with the Redskins. It has already been reported that the Redskins plan to allow him to test free agency in March. Breeland was a 4th round pick in 2014, and has has been a starter since his rookie season. He has started 58 games for the team including the team’s only playoff appearance in the last 4 years.
The Redskins have Josh Norman as their big-money CB, and are highly unlikely to part ways with him this year. With Dunbar re-signed, he will also join Kendall Fuller who had a breakout sophomore season in the slot. Moving Fuller outside could be an option, but coaches could be hesitant to move him from a role he excelled at this year.
The Redskins also drafted Fabian Moreau last year in the 3rd round. He only played 59 snaps on defense, but was on the field for 72.1% of the team’s special teams plays. Washington also has another rookie from last year’s draft class that can compete for a spot next year, Joshua Holsey. He was also used on special team’s for the majority of his playing time last season.
The Redskins also announced the signings of 11 players to reserve/futures deals yesterday. OL Alex Balducci, OL Cameron Jefferson, OL John Kling, RB Kenny Hilliard, TE Chris Bazile, DL Tavaris Barnes Sr., DL Ondre Pipkins, LB Alex McCalister, LB Cassanova McKinzy, DB James Sample, and S Orion Stewart will all be on the team heading into the offseason. Most of the players signed yesterday spent time on the roster and/or practice squad in 2017, and a few were tryout players.
