The 5 O'Clock Club: Redskin position groups on a scale from 1 - 10

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere...

The 5 o’clock club aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.

I got this comment on a different ‘club’ post about a month ago:

I'd be interested to see how those numbers looked

if you asked people to rank them on a scale of 1-10 for each position group

The comment came from an Eagles fan who was politely commenting on Hogs Haven, so he may have been talking about the entire NFC East rather than just the Redskins, but it seemed to be a reasonable topic for a 5 o’clock club. I think ranking the entire division is a bit too much work, and we’re too close to the regular season to devote more than one day to the question.

But, now that we know the composition of the 53-man squad (with maybe a bit of shuffling remaining at the bottom of the roster), it seems like a good day to evaluate the depth of each position on the Redskins roster.

I invite you to give a grade (1-10) to each position group, based on what you know now.

10 = perfection

9 = pretty damned good; pro-bowl level play

8 = top-10 in the league

7 = solid play

6 = basically and average group; generally okay, but inconsistent at times

5 = below average, but functional in games

4 = not good; the team loses games because of this unit’s play

3 = bottom third of the league

2 = bottom 5 in the league

1 = worst in the league

Let’s divide the team into 14 position groups:

  • Quarterback
  • Running back
  • Wide Receiver (2 wideouts + slot)
  • Tight ends (blocking & receiving)
  • Offensive line
  • Safeties (SS & FS)
  • Cornerbacks (L, R, Slot)
  • Outside Linebackers (pass rush, coverage, setting the edge)
  • Inside linebackers
  • Defensive Line (DT/DE & NT)
  • Kicker
  • Punter
  • Returners (K & P)
  • Special Teams (general)

Don’t feel as if you have to rank every position group;

give your opinion on whichever groups you feel strongly about.

Rank only one group in your comment, or rank all 14 if you wish;

feel free to rank as many or as few as you like, but it would be great if you could provide reasons for your rankings.

This is the most up-to-date roster I have; it may not be 100% accurate by the time you read this:
