Mason/Brennan Preseason Hype! Awards: Week 1 Edition

Training camp is over and we’ve had a preseason game to build the hype!

NFL: Washington Redskins-Minicamp Rafael Suanes-USA TODAY Sports

The Mason/Brennan award has been given out unofficially by the fans for years to each preseason's most hyped players, but now we're going to make it official, and bring it to a vote. This week's vote will cover the final week of training camp and the first preseason game vs the Ravens. Place your vote for who you feel has been the most hyped player up to this point, whether the hype is deserved or not.

The Rules:

1. Player must have been drafted late or signed by the Redskins as an undrafted free agent. Players that have only been on other teams practice squads that are signed by the team are also eligible.

2. A player that has been on the team for several years is still eligible if most of that time has been spent on the practice squad, inactive, or with very limited productivity/time

3. The Pat White Rule: High draft picks (busts/out of the league) from other teams who have never completed an NFL pass, but can run the read option/wildcat are eligible.

Last Week’s Winner: DT Joey Mbu - 36%

The Candidates:

LB Nico Marley

They hype train for Marley continues to grow, and his NFL debut against the Baltimore Ravens only made it better/worse. Marley evokes the classic question, “If an undersized player can have a HOF-worthy career(London Fletcher), why can’t this player(Marley) make it in the NFL?” Player of the game for the 1st preseason game? Hype!

WR Robert Davis

The Robert Davis hype has returned! He was a favorite as a late round WR gem when he was drafted in the 6th round this year. He had a quiet start to camp, but that has all changed recently. Jay Gruden has been saying good things about him, and he showed up in a preseason game, a pretty vital factor for this award. Leading the team in receiving yardage with 1 catch!

DT Joey Mbu:

Mbu was a slight surprise as last week’s winner, but the Jim Tomsula hype is strong. Mbu could be a part of the Redskins rotation, he just has to beat out the vet coming off of a few injured seasons, Phil Taylor. Mbu’s young knees give him an edge on the hype meter.

DL Anthony Lanier:

Lanier probably should have been included in last week’s vote, but he showed up big in the preseason opener vs the Ravens with a huge sack and two tackles. Lanier was strong in the run game and got to the backup QB’s backup. An undrafted free agent last season who made the roster, and got to see a few snaps before being placed on IR in December. Lanier’s pushing for a roster spot again, and a preseason sack is getting that hype up for the season.

CB Joshua Holsey:

Holsey makes plays, and plays a position that puts him in the spotlight. The Redskins have a lot of talent ahead of him on the roster, but Bashaud Breeland is in a contract year, and Kendall Fuller got a little toasted on a play vs the Ravens. And he got some official HogsHaven hype for his play Thursday.

LB Josh Harvey-Clemons

7th round pick whose NFL comparison was Kam Chancellor coming out of college.

Former five-star recruit with an alpha mentality who roams the field with swagger and undeniable intent as a tackler. Has elite size, length and athletic traits, and is a rangy tackler with the ability to cover and blitz. He could be considered by teams as a box safety or hybrid linebacker.

OL Chase Roullier

Roullier has already shown Jay Gruden enough to probably lock his spot on the roster. Chase held his own against the Ravens, and is still being talked about as a future starter.

OG Kyle Kalis

Kalis seems to be getting the edge on Arie Kouandjio for the backup guard spot. Will this lead to him taking over for Shawn Lauvao this year? Probably not unless Lauvao gets injured...again. But Kalis gets the inside track next year if he keeps showing out this year.
