The Redskins placed OLB Houston Bates on the PUP list yesterday, and waived him with a failed physical designation today. Bates has been with the Redskins since he was signed as an UDFA after the 2015 NFL draft. He has been used mainly on special teams, but has seen some time on the field with the defense as a backup in the 24 games he appeared in for Washington. Bates tore his ACL last December. Jay Gruden said today that he need time to get himself right, and he could be back with the team.
The Redskins also announced the signing of TE E.J. Bibbs, who was also an undrafted free agent in 2015. Bibbs originally signed with the Cleveland Browns, and appeared in 7 games his rookie season. He only has one career catch for 7 yards. Last season Bibbs spent time on the Jaguars practice squad. The Redskins are short one notable TE entering training camp, with Jordan Reed on the PUP list with a big toe injury. Vernon Davis is also dealing with a hamstring issue.
Bibbs was only the third player in college football history to collect on a loss of value policy. He had knee surgery in 2014 before his last season at Iowa State. Bibbs earned All-Big 12 honors, but still went undrafted that year and was able to collect $550,000 from the insurance policy after being projected as a late-round pick.
