Current Redskins Role: Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach and Team Nutritionist (2nd year)
Experience as a Player: 4 years in college (baseball player, College of Wooster)
Coaching Highlights: Strength & Conditioning Coach (2010-2015, Cleveland Indians’ minor league teams)
What He Brings to the Team: Sankal plays an important role as a bridge between the strength coaches and the nutritional staff with the Washington Redskins. When wearing his assistant strength & conditioning coach hat, he is responsible for helping train players to be in top shape for the intensely physical game they play. When stepping into his nutritionist role, Sakal puts his experience as a Registered Dietician with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to use in teaming up with the Redskins’ chef and chef’s staff. He juggles the nutritional needs of the full 53-man roster and the practice squad, as well as answers questions from coaches and others on staff. Part of meeting players’ nutritional needs comes in the form of shakes that he makes easily available to the team after practices; Sakal explained that this is something he picked up from interning with Denver and Ohio State.
Fun Fact: Sankal’s passion for working with players on strength, conditioning, and nutrition comes from his experiences as an athlete. Sankal told Justin Lada, from his hometown paper, The News Herald, about that in a 2015 interview: “I got into the performance side of athletics because I was an undersized athlete growing up. I really appreciated weightlifting, speed and agility training. When I found out I could make a career out of it, I pursued that toward the end of college. It’s all fallen into place. It’s a dream come true.”
Jake Sankal said some of the players’ favorite shakes are the ones listed below. Which one would you rather have?
