The 5 O'Clock Club: Redskins Free Agent option at QB for 2018

New, comments

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere...

Yesterday, Cadillactica asked what quarterback options will exist in the 2018 draft if the Redskins don’t have Kirk Cousins under contract next season.

Caddy made it sound like an “either/or” proposition: either Cousins or a draft pick.

It strikes me that there is at least one other option – veteran free agency. The Redskins could bring in a veteran unrestricted free agent quarterback (let’s not worry about trade scenarios in this article), either as a long-term replacement, or as a “bridge” to the Redskins next face-of-the-franchise.

I took a quick look to see which signal callers – aside from Kirk Cousins -- are not currently under contract beyond this season.

Here are a few names that jumped out at me:

Drew Brees

Brees has a contract with the Saints that will void at the end of this season, leaving $18m in dead cap hit on the New Orleans books in 2018. Currently 38 years old, Brees might provide an extremely capable quarterback for Jay Gruden, but he would be the very definition of a “bridge” to the future.

Sam Bradford

Bradford is just 29 years old now – a year older than Cousins – and will earn $18m from the Vikings this season. He has demonstrated the ability to run various NFL offensive schemes, and did well in a difficult situation in Minnesota last year. Bradford could be signed as a bridge to the future, but is more likely to want to join a franchise where he has the opportunity to become the ‘face of the franchise’ and secure his legacy with some playoff success. Could he and the Redskins form a successful partnership?

Jimmy Garoppolo

Like a number of quarterbacks before him – Brock Osweiller being one of the most recent – Garoppolo has a pretty good reputation built on his college career, his preseason work, and a limited number of NFL starts. Coming from the ulta-successful Patriots organization, Jimmy G would be expected to be an instant starter and team leader. Currently 25 years old, the Redskins would get him as a young signal caller with plenty of productive years ahead of him, but it’s difficult to imagine Belichek letting this potential NFL star leave for no compensation, aside from a compensatory draft pick.

Josh McCown

38-year-old McCown has the opportunity to prove himself to the NFL this season. If he does, you’d think the Jets would want to keep him around; if he doesn’t, why would the Redskins want him?

Kellen Moore

Moore isn’t likely to be a better option than Colt McCoy, who has been here for years and already knows Gruden’s offensive system. Besides, there’s that Cowboy stink that’s on him…

Other young, unproven options

There are a few young quarterbacks who could be available in 2018.

The best of them may be A.J. McCarron, from the Bengals. He may be a very good quarterback, and with Gruden’s ties to the Cincinnati franchise, he may have a very good idea about the young quarterback’s abilities.

Tom Savage has a chance to win the starting job in Houston this season. We may or may not know more about him by next off-season, but it seems that, if Savage performs well this season, the Texans would want to re-sign him, either as a starter or as a backup. If he’s backup quality, the Redskins probably don’t need him; if he’s starter quality, the Texans probably won’t let him go.

At age 27, and after four years with the Raiders, Matt McGloin is the backup to Carson Wentz this year. He has a good reputation, but we’re not likely to see him in a regular season game this season. Is he good enough to start for the Redskins and do the job better than McCoy, Sudfeld or a draft pick?

If the Redskins brought in a veteran free agent to be the 2018 starter, which player would you want it to be?
