Redskins By The (Jersey) Numbers: #97 Lorenzo Alexander

Today we look back on Lorenzo Alexander’s time in Washington

There are quite a few interesting players that have donned #97 for the Redskins. But my favorite by far was Lorenzo Alexander.

Most of us remember his time with the Redskins, he provided one of the few bright spots on the team when there were few. Alexander personifies the lunch pail type player. He was an UDFA and bounced around with the Panthers and Ravens before being signed by the Redskins in 2006. During his time in Washington, he was never a flashy player but he was a key contributor on special teams and provided quality depth as an outside linebacker. He was dependable, consistent, and played with the passion and intensity the team is trying to get back to now and during a time where the team as a whole lacked those qualities to a painful degree.

He was a versatile player also while in D.C. During his first few years, he played snaps at several positions including TE, DT, and DE. Alexander was also respected by his peers and was voted team captain based on his special teams play. 2012 was Alexanders best season statistically with the team and also his last with the Skins. He was named to his first Pro Bowl after that season. Alexander left the Redskins in free agency after the 2012 season and his departure was tied to the infamous $36 million dollar cap penalty assessed before the season.

Alexander had stints in Arizona and Oakland after leaving the Skins but regained his form and played the best football of his career as a starter at OLB for the Buffalo Bills this past season where he also made his second Pro Bowl.

I think it's safe to say nearly all Redskins fans view and remember Alexander fondly and wish him well for the rest of his career.

Let’s look at some of his highlights:
