2017 NFL Draft: Christian McCaffrey, Obi Melifonwu visiting Redskins

It’s draft month.

The Washington Redskins will host RB Christian McCaffrey for a pre-draft visit per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. McCaffrey has been linked to the Redskins in mock drafts all year, and is the kind of talent who could tempt Jay Gruden in the 1st round. Gruden talked about the talent at the position in this year’s draft at this year’s NFL Owners meetings. “If we add one, there are some special players in the draft that would be hard to pass up if they are available.”

McCaffrey is one of three running backs that have been projected to the Redskins this year. FSU’s Dalvin Cook and LSU’s Leonard Fournette will be in the discussion for many teams in the top half of the draft, and could all go in the 1st round.

Robert Kelley enters the 2017 season as the presumptive starter, with Matt Jones, Chris Thompson, Mack Brown, and Keith Marshall also on the roster.

The Redskins are also hosting UConn safety Obi Melifonwu for a visit today per Eric Edholm. Melifonwu made a lot of heads turn with his athletic performance at this year’s Combine, but will that translate to a complete safety at the next level? The Redskins need safety help and Melifonwu will be on their radar this year. He currently is projected as a late 1st - early 2nd round pick, which seems high for his unrefined skillset. But his size(6’4”, 224lbs), and athleticism will likely get him overdrafted by someone.
