Let me first say, this was the steal of the draft! Unbelievable pick by Bruce Allen and company. I was on record as saying Allen was one of the top three players in this draft...easily!
Here is my take on the selection of Jonathan Allen:
First, Allen is scheme diverse. He can play defensive end in our base 3-4 alignment, then kick inside to 3-technique in our sub packages. He's a true 3-down defensive tackle in the NFL.
Allen also has very advanced pass rush moves for a guy just entering the NFL. He has very heavy hands, and is well-versed in the rip-pull, rip-under, bull-rush and spin moves. He also recently added the "Superman" to his repertoire.
Most importantly, Allen adds immediate help as both a run defender and pass rusher. The Redskins were one of the worst teams in the NFL last season stopping the run, and Allen, and newly signed linebacker Zach Brown, will give the unit an immediate upgrade in that department. But his excellence does not stop there. Jonathan is also an outstanding pass rusher, and should help easy the burden on the back end of the defense as he's collapsing the pocket and chasing the quarterback.
Overall, I feel this was an outstanding pick by our front office, and one that will pay huge dividends for years to come.
