Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay released a new mock draft today(E$PN IN$IDER) that features them taking turns making the picks that they would make for every team for the first three rounds of the draft. Kiper gets all three of the Redskins picks and once again takes two defenders and a RB for Washington, similar to his Grade A mock draft this week. Kiper once again gives the Redskins safety Malik Hooker in the first round. He borrows McShay’s pick from his last mock draft, controversial RB Joe Mixon, in the 2nd round. Mixon replaces Kiper’s RB pick of Dalvin Cook in this previous mock. He also gives the Redskins an edge rusher in the 3rd round, Carl Lawson who replaces DL Dalvin Tomlinson.
This is a potential boom or bust draft for the Redskins, with Hooker and Lawson either dealing with injuries, or having major injury concerns during their college careers. Hooker also has 1 year of starting experience, but has the potential to be a star. Joe Mixon is one of the best RBs in the draft, and would probably be in the first round discussion with the other top backs if not for his assault incident that has pushed him off team’s draft boards. All three have the potential to be starters early in their careers, but the red flags are flying from the Hair’s picks.
1st Round
Kiper's pick: Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State
He could drop a little bit; he had surgery in January to repair sports hernias and a torn labrum in his hip. But he'd be a great center-fielder-type safety for the Redskins.
2nd Round
Kiper's pick: Joe Mixon, RB, Oklahoma
Now, I said Mixon wouldn't be on my board if I was GM. But let's be realistic: A team is going to take him around here, despite his off-field issues.
3rd Round
Kiper's pick: Carl Lawson, DE, Auburn
Lawson was thought of as a future first-round pick after his stellar 2013 season, but he missed all of 2014 with an ACL tear and most of 2015 with a hip injury. He returned with 9.0 sacks last season.
