Player Overview

Jones’ game vs. Miami this year (7 tackles (6 TFLs), 1 sack, 1 PD) showed his potential as a game-changing force and elite talent worthy of a top-10 pick - yet his numerous injuries and perceived lack of dedication to football caused him to miss a lot of time and bounce in and out of the starting lineup.

Jones suffered a Lisfranc injury and an MCL tear in separate years that caused him to miss significant time and development opportunity. Scouts question his work ethic and passion for the game of football. When he’s in the lineup, he can be a game-changer. Jones has elite size and is smart, articulate, and charismatic in interviews. He’ll need the right locker room environment and coaching staff to unlock his potential in the NFL.

  • Elite size and length - tentacle-like arms that put interior offensive linemen at a huge leverage disadvantage
  • Flashes short-area burst and quickness to penetrate backfield and snuff out plays before they can develop
  • Length, leg drive and quickness combine to help shed blocks against the run
  • Frequently played as a 0/1-technique nose tackle on Notre Dame’s line, but has size and traits to play any interior defensive position in a 3-4 scheme

  • Work ethic and passion questions
  • History of lower body injuries (2 foot, 1 knee) mean durability and conditioning a big concern
  • Lack of starting experience throughout college career
  • Plays with high pad level; top heavy which leads to balance issues if driven off the ball

How He’d Fit on the Redskins

I’m incredibly intrigued by Jones’ potential and am leaning towards rolling the dice on him as a defensive line prospect given the right price in the Draft - 3rd round or later.

Jarron Jones’ 2016 game vs. Miami was one of the most dominant performances I’ve seen by a defensive player this year, at a similar level to Solomon Thomas’ utter destruction of NC State’s offense in the Sun Bowl.

The Redskins’ line is in desperate need of a young talent infusion, and lacks a prototypically-sized presence up front with athletic ability. In their base 3-4 scheme he could play nose tackle or either defensive end position, while bringing excitable traits against both the run and the pass.

I believe it was the coaching legend Bill Parcells who said (and I’m paraphrasing) “If I see him do it on tape once, it’s up to our coaches to make him do it all the time”. Is it possible new defensive line coach Jim Tomsula is the man to get Jones to refine his game and unleash his true potential? At the right price I think it’s a risk worth taking.
