Should the Redskins Trade Bashaud Breeland?

Mark Tyler looks at the possibility of the Redskins trading cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland is coming off a down season, but there is no doubt the young defender has talent. The dilemma is whether his play from last season justifies a contact extension sometime before he becomes a free agent in 2018.

If the Redskins have doubts about his future with the team, it may be wise to explore trade options this offseason for a cornerback needy team. If the Redskins let Breeland play out this season on his current rookie deal, and he struggles again, he could be set free to test free agency in 2018, and the Skins will get nothing in return. If he plays to the high level we know he's capable of, his price will skyrocket.

It just so happens that rumors surfaced yesterday about the Dolphins possibly looking to trade for a cornerback. You can read the article Here. The Doplphins currently hold the 22nd and 54th overall picks in the draft. They do not have a third or fourth round pick due to a trade with the Vikings, but will likely add two compensatory picks this season due to the loss of Olivier Vernon and Lamar Miller. Many have projected a third and fifth as possible added picks, and although these can't be traded, they will help in the loss of the fourth and fifth they sent to Minnesota.

So, would the Dolphins, or another cornerback-needy team be interested in securing the services of Bashaud Breeland?

If general Manager Scot McCloughan feels like second year corner Kendall Fuller can bounce back from a tough rookie season, and become an impact player on the outside opposite Josh Norman, the Redskins may be prudent to look into some possible suitors for Breeland. There is also potential in third year pro Quinton Dunbar, who saw significant action as a rookie, but saw a bit less of the field last year due to Norman, Breeland and Fuller securing reps.

The possibliity also exists of McClougan going cornerback in the draft if the team were to trade Breeland. This is an extremely deep class at cornerback, and a significant contributor could probably be found as late as the third or fourth round.

Should the Redskins at least explore the option of trading Breeland this offseason, and if so, what would you expect to see in return for the young corner?
